Jovan et Jos\u00e9 ont, tout comme l\u2019italien qu\u2019ils ram\u00e8nent \u00e0 son origine, \u00e9migr\u00e9s en Suisse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire la suite de la critique (en libre acc\u00e8s)-->\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019un tzigane et anciennement chanteur \u00e0 Belgrade, l\u2019autre originaire du Portugal, int\u00e9ress\u00e9 par la culture et avare de paroles, se rencontrent et \u00e9changent \u00e0 mesure que les kilom\u00e8tres les s\u00e9parant du cimeti\u00e8re s\u2019amenuisent. De station service en h\u00f4tel,&nbsp;d\u2019autoroutes en chemins de campagne, le corbillard cr\u00e9\u00e9 un espace d\u2019intimit\u00e9 et de confiance, permettant \u00e0 une complicit\u00e9 toute tol\u00e9rante de na\u00eetre, presqu\u2019en huis clos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Un voyage dans le temps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Le r\u00e9alisateur de <em>Calabria,\u00a0<\/em>Pierre-Fran\u00e7ois Sauter, arrive en Europe \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de onze ans et conna\u00eet d\u2019exp\u00e9rience l\u2019\u00e9migration. \u00abLa question du retour dans le pays o\u00f9 on a pass\u00e9 son enfance est quelque chose qui m\u2019int\u00e9resse\u00bb, d\u00e9clare-t-il dans une entrevue pour le festival <em>Vision du r\u00e9el. <\/em>Et d\u2019ajouter \u00e0 propos des retrait\u00e9s immigr\u00e9s italiens qu\u2019il rencontrait: \u00ab[\u2026] ils disaient qu\u2019ils auraient voulu revenir dans le pays de leur enfance mais ils n\u2019avaient pas pu donc pour eux, c\u2019\u00e9tait apr\u00e8s la mort. Cette composante m\u2019int\u00e9ressait parce que c\u2019est plut\u00f4t un voyage dans le temps qu\u2019un voyage g\u00e9ographique [\u2026]\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alors que le voyage de Jos\u00e9 et Jovan d\u00e9bute, un personnage subreptice se devine: le temps. Il impose aux hommes son existence tout en exigeant une fin de la leur. Dans <em>Calabria, <\/em>la temporalit\u00e9 est duale: celle de la vie, avan\u00e7ant in\u00e9luctablement vers la mort (ou, pour le d\u00e9funt, vers l\u2019enfance) et celle du voyage qui, lui aussi, devra prendre fin. Le cercueil \u00e0 l\u2019arri\u00e8re du corbillard rappelle sans cesse le temps qui passe et permet de savourer chacune des 117 minutes du film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Le son passe avant le montage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Equivoque, le d\u00e9but de <em>Calabria<\/em> est compos\u00e9 de vid\u00e9os d\u2019archives montrant des immigr\u00e9s en Suisse. Ces premi\u00e8res minutes, <em>a priori<\/em> sans liens avec les deux sc\u00e8nes suivantes, n\u2019offrent pas au spectateur la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 d\u2019un h\u00e9ros manifeste aux premi\u00e8res secondes. Il se devine subtilement, acteur inerte et silencieux \u00e0 l\u2019arri\u00e8re du corbillard, omnipr\u00e9sent gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019impact de sa situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les plans, le plus souvent larges et fixes, portent l\u2019attention vers ce qui compte: le texte, les personnages et, lorsqu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019un paysage, les rares mouvements \u00e9reintant son inertie. Une fa\u00e7on, peut-\u00eatre, de repr\u00e9senter la vie; forte \u00e0 l\u2019image des vagues de la mer italienne, ou fragile telle la coccinelle avan\u00e7ant doucement sur un lit d\u2019herbe verte\u2026 mais toujours pr\u00e9sente, infiniment active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le son ind\u00e9niablement travaill\u00e9 \u00e9tablit un espace tant\u00f4t serein, tant\u00f4t pesant. Au sein du corbillard, lieu principal \u2013 et mobile \u2013 du film, ni \u00e9mission radio ni musique, mais un bruit rond et feutr\u00e9. A l\u2019inverse, alors que le cercueil est aux mains des responsables du cimeti\u00e8re en Italie, les cliquetis et bruits de rouille gagnent en importance \u00e0 mesure que le cercueil s\u2019approche de sa destination finale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La valeur ethnographique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Le th\u00e8me du voyage, fort pr\u00e9sent, se d\u00e9cline en deux exp\u00e9riences principales: l\u2019\u00e9migration et le d\u00e9placement professionnel. Bien que les trois passagers aient v\u00e9cu l\u2019\u00e9migration, elle s\u2019efface et ne fait pas objet d\u2019\u00e9change entre Jovan et Jos\u00e9, qui pourtant discutent aussi bien de leurs biographies que de philosophie ou de sujets l\u00e9gers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tout voyage, aussi unique que nous puissions le croire, se compose d\u2019\u00e9tapes communes \u00e0 tous les d\u00e9placements; ceux-ci ont un d\u00e9but, une fin, une raison d\u2019\u00eatre, et ils obligent un d\u00e9placement (s\u2019il n\u2019est pas g\u00e9ographique, il sera spirituel). Les \u00e9tapes du voyage sont expos\u00e9es dans <em>Calabria, <\/em>bien s\u00fbr, mais on y trouve une qualit\u00e9 de plus: le d\u00e9paysement. Pour le spectateur, il existe plus encore que pour les personnages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A travers l\u2019expression de leurs souvenirs dans un fran\u00e7ais marqu\u00e9 par leurs origines ou au gr\u00e9 des chansons que Jovan entonne en serbe, <em>Calabria <\/em>transmet la normalit\u00e9 et la beaut\u00e9 d\u2019une rencontre interculturelle. Nous remarquons, gr\u00e2ce au soin apport\u00e9 au texte ainsi qu\u2019au temps accord\u00e9 aux acteurs pour incarner leurs personnages, une foule de d\u00e9tails ethnographiques.
