En un tour de force admirable, John Carroll Lynch signe un long-m\u00e9trage qui restera comme la premi\u00e8re trace d&#8217;un nouveau genre, mais aussi la derni\u00e8re.\u00a0<em>Lucky<\/em>\u00a0est une \u0153uvre compl\u00e8te et r\u00e9unit tous les ingr\u00e9dients pour allier western et m\u00e9lancolie. Notre article grand format.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Lucky<\/em> est la premi\u00e8re r\u00e9alisation de John Carroll Lynch, un acteur d\u00e9j\u00e0 confirm\u00e9 dans le cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain, qui a tourn\u00e9 aupr\u00e8s des plus grands, \u00e0 l&#8217;instar de Clint Eastwood. Avec ce premier long-m\u00e9trage s&#8217;inscrivant dans le cin\u00e9ma ind\u00e9pendant, Lynch s&#8217;empare d&#8217;un genre qu&#8217;il est tant difficile de renouveler, d\u00e9fi qu&#8217;il rel\u00e8ve n\u00e9anmoins avec succ\u00e8s: le western.<\/p>\n<p>Il y a un fait qu&#8217;on ne peut pas n\u00e9gliger. L&#8217;acteur nonag\u00e9naire se trouvant au centre de <em>Lucky<\/em>, portant d&#8217;ailleurs le m\u00eame nom, qui est son sujet comme son objet, est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 le 15 septembre, entre la fin du tournage et la sortie du film. Moi-m\u00eame, je ne le savais pas au moment de la projection. Mais \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9criture de cette critique, cette dimension fun\u00e8bre prend tout son sens et son importance, car nous avons bien affaire \u00e0 un film hommage.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Un aboutissement des westerns classiques<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>En effet, l&#8217;acteur\u00a0Harry Dean Stanton revenait d&#8217;une longue carri\u00e8re, qui ne l&#8217;avait fait endosser un r\u00f4le principal qu&#8217;une seule fois, en 1984, dans\u00a0<em>Paris, Texas<\/em>. Le film de Lynch se veut con\u00e7u sur mesure pour cet artiste singulier qui n&#8217;avait peut-\u00eatre pas \u00e9t\u00e9 appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 \u00e0 sa juste valeur. Justice est d\u00e9sormais rendue avec <em>Lucky<\/em>, mettant en sc\u00e8ne un vieil homme vivant en 2017 \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d&#8217;un cow-boy solitaire en plein d\u00e9sert de l&#8217;Arizona. Nul besoin de chercher une histoire, un sc\u00e9nario: le film, c&#8217;est ce personnage.<\/p>\n<p>Le film, c&#8217;est aussi le cin\u00e9ma. Le plus pur, \u00e0 savoir le western. D\u00e9roulant tout en finesse une s\u00e9rie d&#8217;allusions aux grandes\u00a0\u0153uvres de l&#8217;Ouest am\u00e9ricain, <em>Lucky<\/em>\u00a0fait pousser un cri de bonheur aux nostalgiques: \u00able cin\u00e9ma n&#8217;est pas mort!\u00bb Evidemment que non. Quelle joie que de d\u00e9guster la premi\u00e8re sc\u00e8ne, o\u00f9 l&#8217;on assiste aux rituels quotidiens du nonag\u00e9naire, compos\u00e9s d&#8217;une premi\u00e8re cigarette, d&#8217;une courte s\u00e9ance de yoga et d&#8217;un petit d\u00e9jeuner dans un <em>Abendessen<\/em>\u00a0du coin.<\/p>\n<p>Ses journ\u00e9es, le vieillard les passe ensuite \u00e0 r\u00e9soudre des mots crois\u00e9s, d\u00e9ambuler dans la rue, acheter sa bouteille de lait, regarder des jeux t\u00e9l\u00e9vis\u00e9s. Le soir, place \u00e0 la vie, la vraie: le bistrot, o\u00f9, sirotant un\u00a0<em>bloody maria<\/em>, Lucky \u00e9coute son ami se plaindre de la fuite de sa tortue terrestre. Un synopsis invraisemblable pour un cin\u00e9ma remarquable: renouvelant et renouant avec toutes les marques du western classique, <em>Lucky<\/em> semble en constituer une sorte d&#8217;aboutissement. Cela est particuli\u00e8rement vrai pour une grande sc\u00e8ne du film, o\u00f9 le talent des acteurs Harry Dean Stanton et James Darren fusionne avec une musique grandiose.<\/p>\n<h3>M\u00e9lancolie et misanthropie<\/h3>\n<p>Le film tire aussi son g\u00e9nie des r\u00e9pliques de Lucky. Jouant de son semblant de misanthropie lorsque qu&#8217;il se trouve en public, le \u00abr\u00e9ac&#8217;\u00bb am\u00e9ricain aussi subtil qu&#8217;authentique est plut\u00f4t taiseux. Mais ses sorties valent de l&#8217;or. Quand il entre dans le \u00abdiner\u00bb, voici ce qu&#8217;il dit au patron:\u00a0\u00abTu n&#8217;es rien\u00bb (\u2013 \u00abToi non plus\u00bb). Quand il refuse d&#8217;adresser la parole \u00e0 un notaire qu&#8217;il n&#8217;estime pas beaucoup, cela donne:\u00a0\u00abJe pr\u00e9f\u00e8re encore les silences g\u00eanants aux banalit\u00e9s d&#8217;usage.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Derri\u00e8re ce personnage qu&#8217;il aime incarner aupr\u00e8s des autres villageois, c&#8217;est en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 une profondeur philosophique admirable qui se cache au fond de cette \u00e2me si attachante. Ses r\u00e9flexions sur la solitude notamment, que nous n&#8217;allons pas retranscrire ici pour vous laisser les d\u00e9couvrir au cin\u00e9ma, servent la dimension existentielle de <em>Lucky<\/em>. Les objets eux aussi r\u00e9pondent \u00e0 cette m\u00e9lancolie de l&#8217;ouest, caract\u00e9ristique de tout \u00eatre int\u00e9ressant: harmonica et cigarette d\u00e9gagent des ondes venant amener le th\u00e8me ultime du film, la conscience de la mort.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abRien n&#8217;est permanent.\u00bb On aurait cru entendre H\u00e9raclite. On assista en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 \u00e0 la parole proph\u00e9tique d&#8217;un acteur qui allait bient\u00f4t nous quitter. Ce film lui aura permis de faire ses adieux dans le sublime.
