Son premier film am\u00e9ricain porte les influences gothiques de son Angleterre natale tout en laissant transpara\u00eetre son in\u00e9luctable penchant pour le <em>schwarz<\/em>. Une production hybride, accouch\u00e9e dans la douleur, mais qui lui ouvrira les portes d\u2019Hollywood puisque <em>Rebecca<\/em> obtiendra l\u2019Oscar du meilleur film en 1941.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Rebecca (1940) bande annonce\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XMLXv1ZHjaQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Du roman noir&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Une jolie jeune femme (Joan Fontaine), orpheline, au caract\u00e8re peu affirm\u00e9, rencontre un homme plus \u00e2g\u00e9 (Laurence Olivier), riche, veuf, taciturne et autoritaire. Apr\u00e8s un mariage rapidement exp\u00e9di\u00e9, ce dernier d\u00e9cide d\u2019emmener sa nouvelle et docile \u00e9pouse en Cornouailles pour en faire la nouvelle ma\u00eetresse de Manderley, gigantesque mansion aux allures de ch\u00e2teau hant\u00e9. Surplombant l\u2019oc\u00e9an d\u00e9cha\u00een\u00e9 dans lequel feu Madame de Winter s\u2019est noy\u00e9e, la b\u00e2tisse, ainsi que le personnel de maison, sont encore fortement impr\u00e9gn\u00e9s de sa pr\u00e9sence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La recette est respect\u00e9e \u00e0 la lettre et sont pr\u00e9sents tous les ingr\u00e9dients qui ont fait le succ\u00e8s des <em>gothic novels<\/em> entre les XVIII<sup>.<\/sup> und XIX<sup>.<\/sup> si\u00e8cles. On ne peut en effet s\u2019emp\u00eacher de faire le parall\u00e8le avec <em>Jane Eyre<\/em> oder <em>Les Hauts de Hurlevent<\/em>, dignes h\u00e9ritiers du roman noir. Car c\u2019est bien de ce genre, d\u00e9cri\u00e9 par la critique mais pl\u00e9biscit\u00e9 par les lecteurs, que Daphne du Maurier s\u2019est, en partie, inspir\u00e9e pour \u00e9crire le livre qui est \u00e0 l\u2019origine du film. En partie, parce que l\u2019auteur a l\u2019audace de faire appel \u00e0 un autre genre litt\u00e9raire faisant d\u00e9bat, le roman policier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En effet, la myst\u00e9rieuse Rebecca est partout. Ses initiales sont grav\u00e9es sur chaque objet et son nom est dans toutes les bouches. Face \u00e0 l\u2019admiration sans bornes que la d\u00e9funte suscite encore, la nouvelle arriv\u00e9e, d\u00e9j\u00e0 d\u00e9laiss\u00e9e par son mari, sombrera dans la solitude. Accabl\u00e9e par la froideur de l\u2019aust\u00e8re gouvernante Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson), qui lui voue une haine \u00e0 la hauteur de la passion qu\u2019elle \u00e9prouvait pour Rebecca, celle qui n\u2019a m\u00eame pas de pr\u00e9nom finit par apprendre de la bouche m\u00eame de son ombrageux \u00e9poux qu\u2019il en est l\u2019assassin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Femme fatale et provocante, Rebecca a laiss\u00e9 derri\u00e8re elle de nombreux secrets et un homme obs\u00e9d\u00e9 et tortur\u00e9 par l\u2019acte terrible qu\u2019il a commis. Mais est-il vraiment coupable? Mrs. Danvers, amie, confidente et peut-\u00eatre m\u00eame amante, en sait-elle plus qu\u2019elle ne dit? Qu\u2019en est-il de Frank, l\u2019intendant n\u2019ayant d\u2019yeux que pour elle? Et Favell, le cousin qui profite de l\u2019absence de Maxim de Winter pour discr\u00e8tement s\u2019introduire \u00e0 Manderley, a-t-il quelque chose \u00e0 cacher? Un d\u00e9fi que Hitchcock m\u00e8nera pourtant \u00e0 bien et avec brio malgr\u00e9 sa collaboration houleuse avec le producteur David O. Selznick. Si ce dernier impose au r\u00e9alisateur la consigne de respecter \u00e0 la lettre l\u2019intrigue du roman \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019exception de la chute \u2013 Hitchcock saura toutefois comment contourner cette r\u00e8gle stricte pour imposer sa vision et son esth\u00e9tique si particuli\u00e8res. Car il faut le dire, <em>Rebecca<\/em> est un film totalement emprunt de la patte magistrale du ma\u00eetre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ouverture sur une voix-off, tonalit\u00e9 pessimiste, <em>R\u00fcckblende<\/em>, atmosph\u00e8re sombre, juxtaposition de sc\u00e8nes courtes et longues, opposition entre la sulfureuse brune et la douce blonde, sans oublier quelques touches de cynisme et d\u2019ironie. C\u2019est notamment par son habilet\u00e9 \u00e0 cr\u00e9er de consid\u00e9rables zones d\u2019ombres, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la musique ou \u00e0 la cam\u00e9ra, laissant le suspense entier, que le r\u00e9alisateur s\u2019\u00e9mancipera de mani\u00e8re subtile du carcan que l\u2019industrie hollywoodienne lui impose. Mais le g\u00e9nie de Hitchcock est surtout manifeste dans son traitement de l\u2019image, inspir\u00e9 de l\u2019expressionnisme allemand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les \u00e9clairages en clair-obscur tant\u00f4t en plan large, tant\u00f4t en gros plan, mettent en valeur les visages et intensifient les \u00e9motions des acteurs. Les jeux de contraste redessinent les silhouettes tout en magnifiant les d\u00e9cors, cr\u00e9ant ainsi de sublimes tableaux. Manderley, fi\u00e8rement adoss\u00e9e \u00e0 ses falaises escarp\u00e9es, devient alors un personnage \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re, terrifiant. Un terrain de jeu id\u00e9al pour nous plonger dans les m\u00e9andres psychologiques des personnages, ce dont Hitchcock saura, par la suite et de fa\u00e7on plus marqu\u00e9e encore, se faire le
