Intelligence artificielle<\/em> (2001), Steven Spielberg signait son vingti\u00e8me long-m\u00e9trage. Ce film, inspir\u00e9 de la nouvelle <em>Supertoys Last All Summer Long <\/em>de Brian W. Aldiss, repr\u00e9sentait un monde futuriste, pla\u00e7ant son intrigue au XX<sup>.<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, et enfin au cinqui\u00e8me mill\u00e9naire. Dans ce monde, des robots, les <em>Mechas<\/em>, accomplissent pour les \u00eatres humains, appel\u00e9s <em>Orgas<\/em>, de nombreuses t\u00e2ches, y compris de prostitution, mais sont incapables de ressentir un v\u00e9ritable amour, d\u00e9pourvus qu\u2019ils sont de tout sentiment qui ne soit pas simul\u00e9. Cela va changer lorsque le professeur Allen Hobby (William Hurt) et son \u00e9quipe vont cr\u00e9er un robot capable d\u2019aimer\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire la suite de la critique (en libre acc\u00e8s)-->\n\n\n\n<p>D\u2019une grande puret\u00e9 formelle, fid\u00e8le \u00e0 la rigueur de Stanley Kubrick, \u00e0 qui il est d\u00e9di\u00e9 et dont l\u2019id\u00e9e lui \u00e9tait venue dans les ann\u00e9es septante, avant qu\u2019il n\u2019en confie le projet \u00e0 Spielberg, faute d\u2019effets sp\u00e9ciaux suffisamment d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s alors, non sans que celui-ci ne renonce \u00e0 une esth\u00e9tique plus douce et expressive d\u2019\u00e9motions, <em>A.I.<\/em> explore plusieurs questions m\u00e9taphysiques, en particulier celle de ce qui fonde notre humanit\u00e9. Mais il est avant tout l\u2019histoire d\u2019une naissance, celle de David, un robot dont la qu\u00eate pour devenir un vrai petit gar\u00e7on, et ce afin d\u2019\u00eatre aim\u00e9 comme tel, le conduit aux portes de l\u2019intelligence artificielle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"AI : Intelligence Artificielle - Bande Annonce Officielle (VF) - Steven Spielberg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a6lTk0mLaGo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On pourrait revenir sur la gen\u00e8se de ce film, qui participe \u00e0 le rendre unique et constitue en soi une histoire passionnante. Mais tout, en r\u00e9alit\u00e9, le rend unique, et de ce fait, mal compris par un grand public qu\u2019il aura pu laisser sceptique ou sur sa faim, puisque les choix techniques du r\u00e9alisateur qu\u2019on assimilait et assimile encore au cin\u00e9ma hollywoodien le plus pur et \u00e0 son histoire sont pour le moins inhabituels. Son film de science-fiction suivant, <em>Minority Report<\/em>, lui vaudra un succ\u00e8s autrement important, du fait que les codes du genre y sont davantage respect\u00e9s, ce qui n\u2019en fait pas un meilleur film. Le travail de photographie, assum\u00e9 par Janusz Kami\u0144ski, ainsi que les prouesses techniques visibles dans ce film le propulsent dans une dimension plastique qui n\u2019a rien \u00e0 envier aux productions actuelles. Ses <em>designs<\/em>, en partie bas\u00e9s sur des dessins de Kubrick en personne, ont de quoi \u00e9blouir ceux m\u00eames que l\u2019intrigue, inspir\u00e9e, quoique largement r\u00e9interpr\u00e9t\u00e9e, des <em>Aventures de Pinocchio<\/em>, pourrait laisser indiff\u00e9rents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Le choix, comme acteur principal, de Haley Joel Osment, enfant acteur r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 dans le film <em>Sixi\u00e8me Sens<\/em>, a beau n\u2019\u00eatre pas le plus audacieux, puisque Spielberg ne prend pas le risque de lancer un inconnu total jusqu\u2019alors. Mais le regard sans cillement de l\u2019acteur, dont les yeux sont ouverts pendant tout le film, tant que la cam\u00e9ra capture son visage, ainsi que son sourire ing\u00e9nu ou sa m\u00e9lancolie capricieuse font de lui <em>the right child in the right place<\/em>. Spielberg a recours aux plans rapproch\u00e9s seulement dans les dialogues hautement \u00e9motionnels, et divers proc\u00e9d\u00e9s servent \u00e0 mettre les \u00e9motions \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cart, car elles pr\u00e9sentent un \u00e9ventuel danger. David, le robot enfant premier de son esp\u00e8ce, parce que capable d\u2019aimer, choisi par le couple Swinton comme succ\u00e9dan\u00e9 \u00e0 un fils mourant, qui reviendra et provoquera l\u2019abandon de David par sa m\u00e8re, fera en effet fondre d\u2019\u00e9motion, mais aussi sursauter de peur, et enfin le rejeter, une famille d\u00e9pass\u00e9e par un \u00eatre dont elle ne comprend pas l\u2019amour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cependant, on trouve des allusions moins perceptibles au spectateur inattentif, comme la forme de la voiture de Monica Swinton (Frances O\u2019Connor), la m\u00e8re \u00abadoptive\u00bb de David et de son fr\u00e8re Martin, un Jake Thomas dont le talent pour camper un personnage antipathique au possible est \u00e0 saluer. Le film commence avec l\u2019oc\u00e9an, un narrateur expliquant qu\u2019Amsterdam, New York et Venise n\u2019existent plus, submerg\u00e9es. Dans la derni\u00e8re partie, les oc\u00e9ans ont gel\u00e9. Entre les deux, c\u2019est une odyss\u00e9e qui conduit David, accompagn\u00e9 du \u00ab<em>love Mecha<\/em>\u00bb Gigolo Joe (un Jude Law au jeu impeccable), \u00e0 explorer le monde, d\u2019abord victime d\u2019une <em>Flesh Fair<\/em>, \u00abfoire \u00e0 la chair\u00bb c\u00e9l\u00e9brant soi-disant la vie, et ce au d\u00e9triment des robots qui sont ex\u00e9cut\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019acide ou au canon dans une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de sacrifice g\u00e9ant, renvoyant \u00e9videmment \u00e0 l\u2019Holocauste, th\u00e8me cher \u00e0 Spielberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le sacrifice d\u2019enfant sera \u00e9vit\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une foule \u00e9mue par les cris trop r\u00e9els du jeune David, alors m\u00eame que l\u2019organisateur des festivit\u00e9s cite le Christ dans un discours aux accents trumpiens avant l\u2019heure: \u00ab<em>Let he who is without sin cast the first stone<\/em>.\u00bb Ensuite, c\u2019est \u00e0 Rouge City, ville de d\u00e9bauche et centre dystopique d\u2019un monde post-d\u00e9cadent, que nos deux amis se rendront, dont les entr\u00e9es ont la forme de bouches pulpeuses et grandes ouvertes\u2026 Stanley Kubrick avait express\u00e9ment demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Spielberg qu\u2019il int\u00e9gr\u00e2t un extrait de la <em>Suite<\/em> op. 59 du <em>Chevalier \u00e0 la rose<\/em> de Richard Strauss dans une sc\u00e8ne d\u2019<em>A.I.,<\/em> que l\u2019on entend en effet bri\u00e8vement \u00e0 l\u2019entr\u00e9e de <em>Rouge City<\/em>, discr\u00e8te mais ironique r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 un romantisme totalement absent de la cit\u00e9 aux couleurs criardes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais l\u00e0 ne s\u2019arr\u00eate pas cette odyss\u00e9e futuriste, car \u00e0 <em>Rouge City<\/em>, le Docteur Know, un programme informatique manifest\u00e9 sous des traits holographiques einsteiniens de dessin anim\u00e9, guidera David et Joe au-del\u00e0 des mers, \u00e0 Manhattan dont le sommet des buildings d\u00e9passe de l\u2019oc\u00e9an et o\u00f9 se trouve le cr\u00e9ateur de David, le professeur Hobby. David y d\u00e9couvre des r\u00e9pliques de lui-m\u00eame, lisant, suspendues ou enferm\u00e9es dans des bo\u00eetes; que reste-t-il donc qui le rendrait unique? Sa qu\u00eate m\u00eame, probablement, qui se termine par l\u2019exaucement d\u2019une pri\u00e8re qu\u2019il r\u00e9p\u00e8te deux mille ans durant: que la F\u00e9e bleue fasse de lui un vrai petit gar\u00e7on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La piste intitul\u00e9e <em>Stored memories<\/em> de la bande-son du film sign\u00e9e John Williams d\u00e9ploie une polyphonie de voix qui chantent une lamentation sur une plan\u00e8te gel\u00e9e, la Terre, d\u2019o\u00f9 tout \u00eatre humain est d\u00e9sormais absent, mais o\u00f9 l\u2019 \u00abamphibicopt\u00e8re\u00bb de David, pris dans les glaces, l\u2019a conserv\u00e9, et par lui la m\u00e9moire de l\u2019\u00eatre humain, rest\u00e9e lettre morte, mais pr\u00e9cieusement conserv\u00e9e.
