D\u00e9pourvue de fermetures \u00e9clair et de chapeaux gris, la police secr\u00e8te de la dictature communiste dans <em>Die Seminaristen<\/em> a pour mission de r\u00e9duire au silence l\u2019Eglise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019\u0153uvre s\u2019inscrivant dans un registre esth\u00e9tique plut\u00f4t qu\u2019historique, le film ne s\u2019embarrasse pas d\u2019explications historiques. Ivan Ostrochovsk\u00fd nous emm\u00e8ne dans la Tch\u00e9coslovaquie du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 80 o\u00f9 le r\u00e9gime communiste, depuis sa prise de pouvoir apr\u00e8s la Seconde Guerre mondiale dans tout le bloc de l\u2019Est, veut museler toute parole dissidente en imposant ses seules conceptions id\u00e9ologiques au sein de toutes les sph\u00e8res de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Alors que deux jeunes \u00e9tudiants encore ados, Juraj (Samuel Skyva) et Michal (Samuel Polakovic), viennent de rentrer dans le s\u00e9minaire, ils feront face \u00e0 un choix douloureux entre la libert\u00e9 et le silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poursuivre sa foi ou se plier au r\u00e9gime? Le film alterne les deux faces de ce choix \u2013 la r\u00e9sistance ou la collaboration \u2013 en filmant le mouvement <em>Pacem in Terris<\/em> \u2013 groupe de pr\u00eatres collaborationnistes au sein du pouvoir tch\u00e9coslovaque \u2013 et les canaux de la Radio Free Europe\u00e9cout\u00e9s par une poign\u00e9e de s\u00e9minaristes r\u00e9sistants. Avec une mise en sc\u00e8ne tr\u00e8s formaliste \u00e0 la Bresson caract\u00e9ris\u00e9e par un d\u00e9pouillement de toute forme d\u2019artifice, on sent rapidement que le r\u00e9alisateur a pris le parti de privil\u00e9gier la forme plut\u00f4t que le fond. Les personnages ont de la difficult\u00e9 \u00e0 s\u2019incarner v\u00e9ritablement et, par cons\u00e9quent, le spectateur peine \u00e0 s\u2019y attacher. En cela, il est compliqu\u00e9 d\u2019entrer dans le film par un canal classique \u2013 celui de s\u2019accrocher \u00e0 la trame narrative et aux p\u00e9rip\u00e9ties des personnages \u2013 notamment \u00e0 cause des nombreuses ellipses rendant la narration d\u00e9cousue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Die Seminaristen<\/em> s\u2019appr\u00e9hende par la contemplation esth\u00e9tique et le ressenti physiologique qu\u2019il provoque: un malaise et une sensation d\u2019\u00e9troitesse physique. L\u2019exp\u00e9rience sensible se concr\u00e9tise par un format en 4:3, qui rend les s\u00e9quences \u00e9triqu\u00e9es, presque immobiles, et des sc\u00e8nes rapides pr\u00e9sentant les s\u00e9minaristes align\u00e9s en soutane d\u00e9nu\u00e9es de contexte, qui fr\u00f4lent plus la dimension photographique gla\u00e7ante que filmique, le tout rehauss\u00e9 par une absence de couleurs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Hannah Arendt \u00e9crivait dans <em>Les Origines du totalitarisme<\/em>:\u00abIl est dans la nature m\u00eame des r\u00e9gimes totalitaires de revendiquer un pouvoir illimit\u00e9. Un tel pouvoir ne peut \u00eatre assur\u00e9 que si tous les hommes litt\u00e9ralement, sans exception aucune, sont domin\u00e9s de fa\u00e7on s\u00fbre dans chaque aspect de leur vie\u00bb. Au m\u00eame titre que cette citation, chaque aspect du film est domin\u00e9 par une chape de plomb obscure, rendant l\u2019exp\u00e9rience totalitaire accessible sensoriellement. L\u2019unique \u00e9motion qui traverse l\u2019ensemble des personnages est une stupeur mutique. Tous savent que la facult\u00e9 de th\u00e9ologie est infiltr\u00e9e, et pendant que certains collaborent, d\u2019autres r\u00e9sistent, mais toujours en silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sans d\u00e9bordement \u00e9motionnel ou physique et avec une parcimonie de dialogues malgr\u00e9 la pesanteur de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re, les corps restent dociles sous la domination. Le noir et blanc parfaitement sculpt\u00e9 aspire toute vell\u00e9it\u00e9 d\u2019espoir et rend l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re encore plus \u00e9trange et angoissante. En cela, le film restitue l\u2019attribut <em>total<\/em> du r\u00e9gime totalitaire en s\u2019insinuant dans toutes ses instances. Le dispositif entier s\u2019emp\u00eatre dans un immobilisme caract\u00e9ristique de la terreur dans la mesure o\u00f9 la pens\u00e9e et les mouvements sont dress\u00e9s pour rester au sein du cadre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dilemme moral<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>La sc\u00e9nariste britannique Rebecca Lenkiewicz, \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre dans le film, avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 fait de la religion une question centrale dans deux de ses autres sc\u00e9narios co-\u00e9crits avec les r\u00e9alisateurs: <em>Ida<\/em> (2013) de Pawel Pawlikowski et <em>D\u00e9sob\u00e9issance <\/em>de Sebasti\u00e1n Lelio (2017). Le premier retrace l\u2019histoire d\u2019une jeune nonne dans les ann\u00e9es 60 au sein d\u2019une Pologne ultra-catholique qui apprend ses origines juives avant de prononcer ses v\u0153ux. S\u2019ensuit alors une recherche d\u2019identit\u00e9 hors du couvent dans une d\u00e9couverte profane du plaisir charnel et du jazz qui la fera douter de sa foi et du prix \u00e0 payer sur les sacrifices qui l\u2019attendent. Le second met en sc\u00e8ne deux jeunes femmes amoureuses au sein d\u2019une communaut\u00e9 juive-orthodoxe. L\u00e0 encore, la foi est \u00e9branl\u00e9e et mise en doute par un \u00e9v\u00e9nement ext\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sans tomber dans un tableau clich\u00e9 d\u2019une religion traditionaliste et arri\u00e9r\u00e9e, ces deux long-m\u00e9trages questionnent justement la libert\u00e9 de choix, qu\u2019elle soit profane ou religieuse, sans prendre parti. Pawel Pawlikowski disait \u00e0 propos d\u2019<em>Ida<\/em>: \u00abLa Pologne a une relation particuli\u00e8re \u00e0 la religion catholique, ayant subi l\u2019occupation de Russes orthodoxes et de Prussiens protestants. C\u2019est devenu le socle de son identit\u00e9 nationale, au risque d\u2019oublier ce qui est universel et transcendantal dans le christianisme\u00bb.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>Die Seminaristen<\/em>, la libert\u00e9 de religion n\u2019est plus un choix, mais un combat pour retrouver l\u2019universel et la transcendance du christianisme, celle d\u2019une foi pure. C\u2019est \u00e9galement une histoire d\u2019amiti\u00e9 pos\u00e9e en filigrane qui se d\u00e9lite progressivement, l\u2019un ayant choisi la voie de la r\u00e9sistance, l\u2019autre dont le courage est atrophi\u00e9 par la peur.
