Juli, <em>This much I know to be True<\/em>ist die dritte Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Frontmann der Bad Seeds und dem Regisseur Andrew Dominik. Der Dokumentarfilm schwankt zwischen B\u00fchnenauftritten und Anekdoten von Nick Cave. Auch wenn er nichts \u00dcberraschendes enth\u00fcllt, sind die Videoaufnahmen von Songs aus den Alben <em>Ghosteen<\/em> und <em>Gemetzel<\/em> sind wahre Schmuckst\u00fccke.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire la critique (en libre acc\u00e8s)-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"THIS MUCH I KNOW TO BE TRUE (Official Trailer)\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o-f8HDIs6uM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alors qu\u2019il encha\u00eene les projets musicaux et les tourn\u00e9es, on serait bien en droit de se demander o\u00f9 Nick Cave puise son \u00e9nergie. En 2020, il publiait sur les plateformes une <a href=\"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/de\/musik\/idiot-prayer%e2%80%89-nick-cave-alone-at-alexandra-palace-la-grace-comme-horizon\/\">performance solo enregistr\u00e9e au Alexandra Palace de Londres<\/a>. Il y interpr\u00e9tait diff\u00e9rents titres de <em>Ghosteen<\/em>, dernier album en date avec les Bad Seeds et des classiques de son r\u00e9pertoire comme <em>The Mercy Seat<\/em>, <em>Jubilee Street<\/em> oder <em>Stranger than Kindness<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Mais cette fois-ci, c\u2019est son ami de longue date Andrew Dominik \u2013 pour lequel il avait compos\u00e9 la musique du film <em>L\u2019assassinat de Jesse James par le l\u00e2che Robert Ford<\/em> en 2007 \u2013 qui est aux commandes. Le r\u00e9alisateur s\u2019\u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00eat\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019exercice avec <em>One More Time with Feeling<\/em> en 2016. Ce dernier intervenait \u00e0 un moment tragique de la vie de Nick Cave. En effet, il suivait la production de <em>Skeleton Tree<\/em>, seizi\u00e8me album des Bad Seeds. Album noir puisqu\u2019il avait \u00e9t\u00e9 profond\u00e9ment boulevers\u00e9 par le d\u00e9c\u00e8s d\u2019Arthur, son fils cadet. La cam\u00e9ra d\u2019Andrew Dominik entrait dans la sph\u00e8re intime du deuil de la famille Cave. Un t\u00e9moignage poignant, mais aussi incommodant pour le spectateur en position de voyeuriste face \u00e0 un p\u00e8re accabl\u00e9 par le poids du deuil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour ce deuxi\u00e8me documentaire consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 son ami, Dominik Andrew est lib\u00e9r\u00e9 de ces circonstances pesantes, tout comme l\u2019est sa muse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vivre avec ses fant\u00f4mes&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans un atelier exigu, le r\u00e9alisateur et son ami discutent. V\u00eatu d\u2019une blouse blanche, Nick Cave pr\u00e9sente \u00e0 Andrew des statues repr\u00e9sentant le diable. Evoquant l\u2019\u00e9poque victorienne avec un certain <em>kitch<\/em>, chaque relique symbolise une \u00e9tape de vie de la figure des enfers. La derni\u00e8re pi\u00e8ce de ce chemin de croix se nomme \u00abLe pardon du diable\u00bb, nous explique Cave. La cr\u00e9ature g\u00eet \u00e0 terre. Un petit gar\u00e7on est accroupi pr\u00e8s de lui et lui tend la main. La paume ouverte, en guise de pardon. Les premiers loops de <em>Spinning Song<\/em>, titre d\u2019ouverture de l\u2019album <em>Ghosteen<\/em>, se superposent \u00e0 l\u2019image. Puis le plan bascule dans un entrep\u00f4t aux vo\u00fbtes d\u00e9cr\u00e9pites. On se ravise. On distingue des tuyaux d\u2019acier, vestige d\u2019un orgue. L\u2019image a souvent \u00e9t\u00e9 employ\u00e9e. Certains plans d\u00e9di\u00e9s au crooner \u00e0 la voix envo\u00fbtante sont fixes. La spectacularisation n\u2019est pourtant pas de la partie. Les plans tirent en longueur, s\u2019adaptent au rythme des titres de cet album mystique et \u00e9tonnamment d\u00e9nu\u00e9 de percussions et de riffs fougueux. Quant \u00e0 l\u2019image, elle varie entre le format large et celui plus restreint du 4\/3, propre aux t\u00e9l\u00e9viseurs cathodiques. On note que les plans resserr\u00e9s sur l\u2019artiste aux 40 ans de carri\u00e8re b\u00e9n\u00e9ficient principalement de ce traitement d\u2019image. Dans cette bulle, Cave est en qu\u00eate d\u2019absolution. Non, il n\u2019est pas cette cr\u00e9ature \u00e0 cornes qui le fascine. Lib\u00e9r\u00e9 de ses d\u00e9mons, l\u2019Australien a une posture qu\u2019on ne lui connaissait pas. Celle d\u2019un homme qui a apprivois\u00e9 la souffrance et les blessures b\u00e9antes. Les paroles du titre \u00abHollywood\u00bb l\u2019attestent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u00abAnd I\u2019m just waiting now, for my time to come<br>And I\u2019m just waiting now, for my time to come<br>And we hide in our wounds and I\u2019m nearly all the way to Malibu<br>And I know my time will come one day soon<br>I\u2019m waiting for peace to come\u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>La m\u00e9thode Ellis<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019un des reproches qui pouvaient \u00eatre faits \u00e0 l\u2019interpr\u00e8te connu du grand public gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son duo <em>Where the Wild Roses Grow<\/em> avec Kylie Minogue r\u00e9side dans la mise en sc\u00e8ne constante de son personnage. Tant\u00f4t vampire, tant\u00f4t po\u00e8te, le documentaire-fiction <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2920540\/\">20,000 Days on Earth<\/a><\/em> (2014) exploitait ce filon en intervertissant des v\u00e9rit\u00e9s \u00e0 des mensonges sur le parcours de l\u2019homme. Dans <em>This much I know to be True<\/em>, Nick Cave est aussi d\u00e9centr\u00e9. A l\u2019\u00e9cran, on aper\u00e7oit Marianne Faithfull, qui pose sa voix sur le titre <em>Galleon Ship. <\/em>Les deux artistes ont collabor\u00e9 notamment sur <em>Negative Capability<\/em>, l\u2019ultime album de la chanteuse britannique. Ayant \u00e9chapp\u00e9 de peu \u00e0 la mort suite au Covid, la diva britannique ne perd rien de son humour. Son apparition furtive dans le documentaire la fait dialoguer avec Warren Ellis, musicien et compositeur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Parachut\u00e9 au sein des Bad Seeds au tournant des ann\u00e9es 2000, les compositions de Warren Ellis se sont impos\u00e9es peu \u00e0 peu dans les choix artistiques du groupe. Dans le documentaire, Nick Cave reconna\u00eet l\u2019influence qu&#8217;exerce ce musicien aux allures de marin. A partir de l\u2019album <em>Push the Sky Away<\/em> (2013), sa mainmise sur les compositions est \u00e9vidente. Sa patte fait s\u2019att\u00e9nuer la saturation des guitares. Elle dispara\u00eet compl\u00e8tement avec <em>Skeleton Tree. <\/em>Ce sont d\u00e9sormais les boucles sonores distordues qui priment. Autant habile au violon qu\u2019au bouzouki, ce magicien engage Nick Cave dans des territoires inexplor\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Une collaboration amen\u00e9e \u00e0 se poursuivre<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>La collaboration est si fructueuse que les deux acolytes composent pl\u00e9thore de bandes originales. La derni\u00e8re en date \u00e9tant <a href=\"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/de\/kino\/la-panthere-des-neiges-en-film-offre-un-visage-a-la-contemplation\/\">celle de <em>Der Schneeleopard<\/em><\/a> (2021). Dans la derni\u00e8re partie de son documentaire, Andrew Dominik capte \u00e9galement des interpr\u00e9tations de l\u2019album <em>Gemetzel <\/em>(2021), projet des deux gourous des Bad Seeds. Les titres <em>Hand of God<\/em> sowie <em>White Elephant<\/em> accordent deux sublimes moments d\u2019euphorie, marqu\u00e9s par un jeu de lumi\u00e8re \u00e9blouissant. Sorti en 2021, soit deux ans apr\u00e8s <em>Ghosteen<\/em>, il d\u00e9montre que la puissance cr\u00e9ative des deux comp\u00e8res n\u2019est pas pr\u00e8s de s\u2019\u00e9teindre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This much I know to be True<\/em> ravira les fans de Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Il constitue aussi une porte d\u2019entr\u00e9e pour les non-initi\u00e9s. L\u2019ancien punk des Birthday Party est en qu\u00eate d\u2019une r\u00e9demption insatiable, alors que le fant\u00f4me adolescent qu\u2019il d\u00e9crit dans <em>Ghosteen<\/em> l\u2019habite. Dans l\u2019une des prises du documentaire, Cave est assis en face de son ordinateur. Face cam\u00e9ra, il \u00e9voque son site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theredhandfiles.com\/\"><em>The Red Hand Files<\/em><\/a>, o\u00f9 les internautes peuvent lui adresser remarques et questions. Il en s\u00e9lectionne certaines, puis y r\u00e9pond par voie d\u2019e-mail \u00e0 ses abonn\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Le sujet de la perte et du deuil est r\u00e9current. Il d\u00e9finit cette activit\u00e9 comme un exercice spirituel. Co\u00efncidence tragique, l\u2019horreur frappe \u00e0 nouveau le chanteur. Ag\u00e9 de 30 ans, son fils Jethro vient de mourir dans des circonstances encore ind\u00e9finies. Le site de question r\u00e9ponse est un confessionnal \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e8re du web o\u00f9 le chanteur se fait pr\u00eatre et p\u00e9cheur. Nous l\u2019avons dit, la messe est dite.
