Le P\u00e8re Ferreira (Liam Neeson) a apostasi\u00e9, dit-on. Les jeunes j\u00e9suites, Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) et Garupe (Adam Driver), ne peuvent l\u2019accepter. Comment leur mentor, parti \u00e9vang\u00e9liser le Japon, a-t-il pu renier sa foi\u00a0? Il faut s\u2019embarquer \u00e0 sa rescousse.<\/p>\n<p>Les deux n\u00e9o-missionnaires partent pour l\u2019Extr\u00eame Orient. Dans une terre inconnue, myst\u00e9rieuse, hostile. Pour l\u2019enfer\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p>Affreux dilemme existentiel dans lequel m\u00e8ne Scorsese par <em>Stille<\/em>. Insupportable m\u00eame pour un spectateur, croyant ou non qu\u2019il soit. Le nouveau drame cin\u00e9matographique ne porte effectivement pas sur la religion en tant que telle, mais sur un morceau douloureux d\u2019Histoire durant lequel le c\u0153ur des hommes est viol\u00e9. La conscience bafou\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>La morale vire \u00e0 la tourmente. La vie reste-t-elle plus importante qu\u2019une simple promesse de vie, qu\u2019est l\u2019acte de foi\u00a0? Demeure-t-il juste de mourir plut\u00f4t que d\u2019apostasier\u00a0? Et devenir complice d\u2019ex\u00e9cution\u00a0? \u00ab\u00a0Leur souffrance est le prix de votre gloire \u00bb, lance un inquisiteur nippon \u00e0 Rodrigues.<\/p>\n<p>Si les missionnaires ne s\u2019\u00e9taient pas aventur\u00e9s en terre bouddhiste, point de pers\u00e9cution des convertis. Et du prix de l\u2019annonce de la V\u00e9rit\u00e9 \u2013 ou celle qui se pr\u00e9tend telle \u2013 qu\u2019en subsisterait-il\u00a0n\u00e9anmoins ?<\/p>\n<p>Ces questions, qui germent en une multitude \u00e9crasante, sont port\u00e9es avec excellence par une \u0153uvre d\u00e9cid\u00e9ment poly-artistique. La peinture y occupe une place imminente. Des luminosit\u00e9s spirituelles du pinceau d\u2019un Caravage, \u00e0 la face de J\u00e9sus du Greco, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la tache noire subtile sur fond blanc d\u2019un contemporain. Aussi, les jeux de plong\u00e9e compl\u00e8te de la cam\u00e9ra offrent le vertige des dilemmes philosophiques du long-m\u00e9trage. Aux derniers Oscars, le prix de la meilleure photographie fut tr\u00e8s justement attribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la pr\u00e9sente \u0153uvre. L\u2019image est c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9e, \u00e0 la m\u00eame cloche que les habiles et belles man\u0153uvres de son.<\/p>\n<p>Les voix, musiques et silences rythment l\u2019histoire tragique de ces pr\u00eatres portugais au Japon. Le Christ parle gravement, les pieux fid\u00e8les prient intens\u00e9ment et c\u2019est le n\u00e9ant. Des corps br\u00fblent et aucun bruit n\u2019accompagne la sc\u00e8ne bouleversante. Silence de Dieu. <em>Stille<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 le travail minutieux, Scorsese n\u2019atteint pas tout un chacun. La th\u00e9matique est trop lourde\u00a0; saoulantes s\u2019annoncent successivement les r\u00e9p\u00e9tions, siffle-t-on, sci\u00e9 du spectacle excessivement abondant.<\/p>\n<p>Parall\u00e8lement, la pesanteur du film provoque toutefois un engouement particulier. La \u00ab\u00a0catharsis\u00a0\u00bb, sous son mode le plus moderne, est touch\u00e9e en plein chez le cin\u00e9phile.
