\u00abBased on three true stories and a vivid imagination\u00bb: so begins On the Milky Road<\/em>. In a Yugoslavia in the midst of conflict, a small corner of the peasantry appears on screen. Geese, reminiscent of the Capitoline geese that - according to the Latin historian Titus Livius - predicted a Gallic invasion, bathe in the blood of a pig that has just been killed. An incipit that reflects the entire film: tragedy and comedy dabbled in the same container to the sound of the Serbian language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It's the colors, too, that are immediately noticeable: long before the milkman Kosta (played by the director himself, Emir Kusturica) and his sister Milena (Sloboda Micalovic), it's the scenery that's the film's first character. Breathtaking landscapes, a sun that seems divine, omnipresent animals. This universe is also whimsical. A hen hopping in front of a mirror, dancing birds, a clock that \u00abbites\u00bb anyone who tries to fix it: it's easy to see why Kusutrica's cinema can be divisive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the midst of this quiet turmoil, this wartime peace, Kosta is a man you'd think crazy, trundling along on his donkey and under his umbrella, slaloming between bullets. Above all, he's a milkman who's known many misfortunes, and who carries on with his task, his task alone, despite the war that surrounds him. But that's without taking into account the arrival in the village of the beautiful Nevesta (Monica Bellucci), destined to marry Milena's brother. The celebrated actress is a testament to her hard work, in terms of language alone and the three years it took to shoot the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naturally, Kosta and Nevesta fall in love. A little too quickly for it to seem realistic. But the film doesn't want to be realistic. The second half of the film is a case in point, bringing this Serbian drama close to the genre of the marvelous. Forced to flee the soldiers together after the atrocious slaughter that was the wedding, the miraculously alive couple intends to survive even more miraculously. Hiding in the hollow of a huge tree, diving underwater, climbing to the clouds, this new Emir Kusturica creation is all about love, and the Italian woman we all admire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the context of the first kiss between the two lovers proves, On the Milky Road<\/em> is a fireworks display. Absolutely tragic, absolutely comic, the film celebrates popular poetry. The poetry of life against war. The spectator, like the bird of prey flying over his friend Kosta, witnesses a great film based on an exceptional score by Stribor Kusturica, the director's son. A world where different fluids merge in a flood of laughter and thrills. Water, milk, blood, tears. Life facing fire. Like the viper that bathes in mother's milk several times in the film, evil seems to beg forgiveness for being part of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, it seems difficult to call this feature a masterpiece, for a reason that at least will escape the most novice among us: Kusturica has been repeating himself too much for the past few years. He's locked himself in, and his audience doesn't do him any favors. Thus, the good review that ends here will have had the audacity to confront the severe \u00abone star out of five\u00bb of\u00a0T\u00e9l\u00e9rama<\/em>\u00a0and World<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
