And truly music is too great a thing to be able to talk about, but, on the other hand, one can always serve it and always respect it with Humility; singing for me is not an act of Pride but only an attempt to elevate myself to those heavens where all is harmony.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was in January 2013, alone in his hotel room, that Tom Volf discovered Maria Callas, the great soprano of the 20th century.<sup>th<\/sup> century. Barely had he been introduced to the world of opera at the time, and a genuine passion for the singer was born, inspiring him to embark on a gargantuan project: to make \u00abthe\u00bb Callas speak, in his own words, and open up to the public the person he discovered, different in many ways from the one portrayed by the media of the time.<\/p>\n<p>After years of research, collecting archives from the four corners of the globe, Tom Volf has become one of the world's leading Maria Callas specialists. Reluctant to talk to journalists, family members open up to him and entrust him with private documents such as letters, photos and films.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->C\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019en 2017, ann\u00e9e du 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversaire de la mort de Madame Callas, Tom Volf fit para\u00eetre trois ouvrages dans diff\u00e9rentes maisons d\u2019\u00e9ditions\u00a0: <em>Maria by Callas<\/em>, <em>Callas Confidential<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Lettres et m\u00e9moires inachev\u00e9s<\/em>\u00a0ainsi qu\u2019un coffret <em>Callas Live<\/em> regroupant les enregistrements de ses concerts, et une exposition \u2013 \u00e9galement intitul\u00e9e <em>Maria by Callas \u2013 <\/em>d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 la cantatrice. Le 27 d\u00e9cembre, cerise sur le g\u00e2teau, sortait sur grand \u00e9cran le film-documentaire <em>Maria by Callas In her own words<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Soprano mondialement connue, femme enti\u00e8re mais duale, Maria Callas fut l\u2019une des femmes les plus observ\u00e9es du XX<sup>th<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. Sa voix unique et si pleine de personnalit\u00e9 allait de pair avec son exceptionnel jeu de sc\u00e8ne tr\u00e8s expressif, et la d\u00e9couverte de cette femme gr\u00e2ce au documentaire orchestr\u00e9 par Tom Volf, se r\u00e9v\u00e8le pr\u00e9cieuse \u00e0 souhait.<\/p>\n<p>Le film, compos\u00e9 des archives glan\u00e9es au fil du temps, retrace chronologiquement la vie de la Callas. Nous la d\u00e9couvrons petit \u00e0 petit, <em>selon ses propres mots<\/em> puisqu\u2019elle se d\u00e9voile au gr\u00e9 d\u2019interviews, de vid\u00e9os et, bijoux d\u2019intimit\u00e9, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la lecture par Fanny Ardant de quelques-unes des quatre cents lettres envoy\u00e9e par Maria Callas \u00e0 ses proches. Seule Elvira de Hidalgo, sa professeure et confidente d\u00e8s son entr\u00e9e au conservatoire d\u2019Ath\u00e8nes, poss\u00e8de un droit \u00e0 la parole, peut-\u00eatre en raison de ce qu\u2019elle symbolisa pour son \u00e9l\u00e8ve.<\/p>\n<p>Pour ce qui est de la parole, son unicit\u00e9 permet de <em>rencontrer <\/em>Callas, de suivre son \u00e9volution tout en comprenant la femme qu\u2019elle \u00e9tait. Ses mots, honn\u00eates \u00e0 chaque occasion, tout emplis de r\u00e9flexions et d\u2019exp\u00e9riences, d\u00e9voilent la Callas droite, celle que les m\u00e9dias de l\u2019\u00e9poque s\u2019\u00e9taient employ\u00e9s \u00e0 lyncher \u00e0 maintes occasions.<\/p>\n<p>En d\u00e9pit de la bonne qualit\u00e9 des archives, nous regrettons l\u2019\u00e9tat d\u00e9plorable du son. Particuli\u00e8rement au cours des vingt premi\u00e8res minutes de la projection, les textes ont un volume trop bas pour que le public en saisisse tout le sens. Les notes les plus aigu\u00ebs de la grande Callas, port\u00e9es au contraire \u00e0 l\u2019exc\u00e8s, font d\u00e9sagr\u00e9ablement vibrer les tympans.<\/p>\n<p>Par ailleurs, le patchwork de photos et de vid\u00e9os composant le film se comporte \u00e0 plusieurs reprises de mani\u00e8re d\u00e9sorganis\u00e9e, laissant appara\u00eetre un sentiment de d\u00e9sordre. La faute, peut-\u00eatre, au trop grand nombre de documents dont disposait l\u2019auteur \u2013 qui d\u00e9sirait au d\u00e9part proposer un documentaire plus long, preuve de la quantit\u00e9 de mat\u00e9riau dont il disposait.<\/p>\n<p>Nous \u00e9prouvons encore un immense d\u00e9saccord lorsque des images de Monsieur Onassis \u2013 son grand amour d\u2019alors \u2013 accompagn\u00e9 de Jacky Kennedy accompagnent la lecture d\u2019une lettre d\u2019amour que Maria lui envoya un jour. Apposer ces mots tendres et intimes sur les images de la trahison de sa vie fut, \u00e0 nos yeux, d\u2019une grande maladresse.<\/p>\n<p>En d\u00e9finitive, nous estimons r\u00e9ussit le projet cin\u00e9matographique de Tom Volf, quoiqu\u2019il passerait aussi ais\u00e9ment \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision qu\u2019au cin\u00e9ma. Son d\u00e9fi \u2013 nous pr\u00e9senter la Callas qu\u2019il d\u00e9couvrit et aima, et pour laquelle il se passionne tant aujourd\u2019hui \u2013 aboutit au succ\u00e8s.
