Cinema Wednesdays - Alexandre W\u00e4lti<\/em><\/p>\n

Strangely enough, as we left the Studio cinema in Neuch\u00e2tel, in the almost Norman rain, prickly and cold, the words of Belgian poet Emile Verhaeren lapped at our heads like a ray of poetic sunshine warming the sad gutter of the bus stop:<\/p>\n

\u00abI walk with the pride of loving the air and the earth\u00bb.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Essential, simple and direct, like the themes Philippe Le Guay tackles in Normandie Nue<\/em>. This line from the poem One morning<\/em> fits the film perfectly. It certainly echoes the love that the inhabitants of the village of M\u00eale-sur-Sarthe have for their land. The love that the director of the excellent comedy Women on the 6th floor<\/em> - Fran\u00e7ois Cluzet, playing the village mayor. Because yes! some of the farmers who appear on screen, like the Roguet family, are not actors, but proudly practice the world's oldest profession on a daily basis. Yes, there's a second one. The presence of real farmers among the actors is unprecedented.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

L’authenticit\u00e9 saisie \u00e0 vif<\/h3>\n

Le rendu des frictions entre paysans et la solidarit\u00e9 entre voisins n\u2019auraient peut-\u00eatre pas eu le m\u00eame impact s\u2019il n\u2019y avait eu que des professionnels derri\u00e8re et devant la cam\u00e9ra. Le film aurait perdu ces regards pr\u00e9cieux qui trahissent, malgr\u00e9 eux et leur amour pur pour la terre, le poids d\u2019une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 paysanne parfois d\u00e9sesp\u00e9rante entre pesticides et suicides. Disons que ces deux mots sont sans doute tr\u00e8s proches en r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Ajoutons que le r\u00e9alisateur passe ses vacances depuis l\u2019enfance \u00e0 trois kilom\u00e8tres du village qu\u2019il a choisi pour le tournage. Cette proximit\u00e9 et la connaissance du terrain se ressentent dans sa mani\u00e8re de filmer, physiquement proche de l\u2019homme et de la terre. Un huis clos en plein air.<\/p>\n

Il entrecroise et provoque les multiples rencontres entre ses nombreux personnages, peut-\u00eatre en voulant trop faire; tout devient une succession de portraits parfois b\u00e2cl\u00e9s trop vite plut\u00f4t que deux ou trois personnalit\u00e9s qui cr\u00e9eraient une empathie plus profonde au c\u0153ur du spectateur. Et si le film avait \u00e9t\u00e9 plus long? Philippe Le Guay a opt\u00e9 pour un format plut\u00f4t court. Pour les besoins de la production, il n\u2019a pas l\u00e9sin\u00e9 son temps et a notamment enqu\u00eat\u00e9 durant quatre ans pour saisir le plus justement possible la situation des paysans normands.<\/p>\n

Son long-m\u00e9trage gagne assur\u00e9ment en authenticit\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 cette d\u00e9marche et n\u2019en perd cependant rien en universalit\u00e9. Il a ainsi pass\u00e9 de longues heures aupr\u00e8s des travailleurs de la terre pour mieux comprendre ce qui en poussent certains \u00e0 se suicider. A se suicider. L\u2019\u00e9crire deux fois de suite sur une m\u00eame ligne semble \u00e0 peine suffisant pour souligner la gravit\u00e9 et la profondeur de cette douleur paysanne, m\u00eame en Suisse. N\u2019oubliez jamais qu\u2019ils nous nourrissent tandis que certains de nos choix de consommation les tuent \u00e0 petit feu.<\/p>\n

Le combat d’un maire pour une vraie cause<\/h3>\n

Quelle intrigue fait le film? Un maire qui se bat pour ses habitants et donne, avec l\u2019arriv\u00e9e d\u2019un photographe de renomm\u00e9e internationale et sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans des nus monumentaux, plus de forces aux revendications de ses \u00e9lecteurs et, symboliquement, de tous les agriculteurs. Il les d\u00e9sinhibe avec d\u00e9cence. De cette rencontre resurgit tout un pan de pass\u00e9 des personnages qui chamboule la vie tranquille du village. C\u2019est aussi un choc entre les mentalit\u00e9s rurales et urbaines. Un choc qui se mat\u00e9rialise par la jeune adolescente Chlo\u00e9, qui raconte l\u2019histoire, et sa famille citadine. C\u2019est encore l\u2019usine laiti\u00e8re plut\u00f4t que la laiterie villageoise et le supermarch\u00e9 au lieu du march\u00e9.<\/p>\n

L\u2019intelligence du projet? Traiter le sujet du d\u00e9sespoir paysan avec une l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9 d\u00e9sopilante par instants, humaine toujours, burlesque parfois, pudique surtout; pensons par exemple aux savoureuses situations o\u00f9 le maire Balbuzard tente de convaincre les habitants plut\u00f4t r\u00e9fractaires, notamment par un montage cocasse qui remonte aux origines humaines, de poser nus sur le controvers\u00e9 Champ Chollet. Tout le talent de l\u2019acteur fran\u00e7ais qui passe d\u2019une attitude conqu\u00e9rante, militante, \u00e0 la col\u00e8re ent\u00eat\u00e9e tout en faisant souvent sourire ceux qui l\u2019\u00e9coutent. Un personnage tendre, comme ceux du merveilleux Jean Becker, et franc comme ceux de l\u2019engag\u00e9 Ken Loach.<\/p>\n

Au final, l\u2019intrigue est simple et correspond parfaitement au format de la com\u00e9die. De th\u00e9matiques graves, Philippe Le Guay arrive \u00e0 faire de vrais sujets de discussion et donne ainsi une voix tant importante au monde paysan. Bien que l\u2019on devine assez facilement le d\u00e9nouement des conflits du sc\u00e9nario, Normandie Nue<\/em> a le m\u00e9rite de faire rire avec tendresse le spectateur pour l\u2019amener \u00e0 une r\u00e9flexion plus personnelle. C\u2019est peut-\u00eatre l\u00e0 le plus satisfaisant. Un film qui donne envie d\u2019aimer l\u2019air et la terre, d\u2019en prendre fi\u00e8rement soin avec humour et, pour terminer par un autre vers du m\u00eame po\u00e8me de Verhaeren, de \u00abboire l\u2019espace entier pour en gonfler ma force\u00bb.<\/p>\n
