The facts are well known, and not new. For the past twenty-five years, every time a new film is released, the director of\u2019<em>Annie Hall <\/em>come alive, resound, then fall silent. While Mr. Allen and his inner circle have so far managed to contain the fire, the still-painful trauma of the \u00abWeinstein affair\u00bb (brought to light by Ronan Farrow, none other than the New York director's son) may well, by way of reaction, hasten the end of the career of the most prolific director of all time.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019affaire dans laquelle est emp\u00eatr\u00e9 le cin\u00e9aste est complexe et faite d\u2019enqu\u00eates comme de contre-enqu\u00eates. Si nous ne rappelerons pas ici les d\u00e9tails de l\u2019affaire, nous pouvons dire que c\u2019est dans un climat particulier que <em>Wonder Wheel<\/em> d\u00e9bute ses projections. Les d\u00e9buts sont timides, les critiques mitig\u00e9es; le tout est enrob\u00e9 de questionnements philosophiques tels que: \u00abEst-il convenable d\u2019aller voir un tel film?\u00bb, \u00abDevons-nous distinguer l\u2019\u0153uvre de l\u2019homme?\u00bb. En ce qui nous concerne, loin de ces consid\u00e9rations, c\u2019est tout simplement l\u2019amour que l\u2019on porte aux films du petit r\u00e9alisateur new-yorkais qui nous aura pouss\u00e9s \u00e0 aller voir ce qui sera sans doute l\u2019\u00e9pilogue d\u2019une longue histoire.<\/p>\n<h3>Le r\u00eave de Ginny<\/h3>\n<p>C\u2019est au son des voix tr\u00e8s <em>jazzy<\/em> des Mills Brothers que s\u2019ouvre&nbsp;<em>Wonder Wheel<\/em>. Et aussit\u00f4t, la magie op\u00e8re. Nous voil\u00e0 soudainement projet\u00e9s dans les ann\u00e9es cinquante \u00e0 Coney Island, petite p\u00e9ninsule situ\u00e9e dans l\u2019arrondissement de Brooklyn et c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour sa plage et ses nombreux parcs d\u2019attractions. Lieu tr\u00e8s pris\u00e9 de la <em>middle class<\/em> am\u00e9ricaine au d\u00e9but du XX<sup>th <\/sup>si\u00e8cle, c\u2019est dans ce d\u00e9cor bruyant et lumineux que s\u2019installe le r\u00e9cit.<\/p>\n<p>Le film nous raconte l\u2019\u00e9pisode d\u2019une vie, celle d\u2019un \u00e9t\u00e9 de Ginny Rannel (Kate Winslet). Ginny est une femme lunatique, sa beaut\u00e9 et sa jeunesse se fanent et, entre deux migraines, elle travaille comme serveuse dans un restaurant d\u2019hu\u00eetres. Vient agr\u00e9menter ses maux de t\u00eate l\u2019angoisse perp\u00e9tuelle que son fils Richie (Jack Gore), un pyromane d\u2019une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es au visage d\u2019ange, ne tue quelqu\u2019un par ses actes incompr\u00e9hensibles \u2013 mais qui en deviennent presque touchants en vertu des circonstances.<\/p>\n<p>Si le film ne revient jamais sur son pass\u00e9, on apprend tr\u00e8s vite que plus jeune Ginny aspirait \u00e0 devenir actrice de cin\u00e9ma. Mais sans doute est-ce en raison de difficult\u00e9s financi\u00e8res et parce qu\u2019elle devait s\u2019occuper de son fils (fruit d\u2019un premier mariage rat\u00e9) que, ravalant ses r\u00eaves, elle se maria \u00e0 Humpty Rannel (Jim Beluschi) \u2013 tenancier d\u2019un petit man\u00e8ge de chevaux \u00e0 Coney Island. Si, quand il n\u2019est pas ivre, Humpty est un mari aimant et travailleur, Ginny ne l\u2019aime pas&nbsp;; rappelant un peu C\u00e9cilia de <em>The Purple Rose of Cairo <\/em>(1985), Ginny s\u2019\u00e9vade en lisant des revues de cin\u00e9ma et songe \u00e0 la vie qu\u2019elle n\u2019a pas eue.<\/p>\n<p>Or, deux \u00e9l\u00e9ments viennent bouleverser ce morne quotidien: le retour inattendu de la fille de Humpty, Carolina (Juno Temple) \u2013 une dispute faisait qu\u2019elle et Humpty ne s\u2019\u00e9taient plus vus depuis des ann\u00e9es&nbsp;\u2013 et la rencontre d\u2019un jeune ma\u00eetre nageur, Mickey Rubin (Justin Timberlake) \u2013 un \u00e9tudiant qui se r\u00eave \u00e9crivain. Evidemment, comme on pouvait s\u2019y attendre, le bovarysme de Ginny va la faire tomber dans les bras du beau jeune homme. Amoureuse, retrouvant sa jeunesse et son go\u00fbt pour la vie, les choses vont se compliquer quand Ginny s\u2019apercevra que son jeune amant n\u2019est pas indiff\u00e9rent aux charmes de sa belle-fille, Carolina \u2013 certains y verront une mise en ab\u00eeme de la propre vie du r\u00e9alisateur. Ainsi, ce triangle amoureux, sans jamais \u00eatre niais, constitue l\u2019\u00e9pine dorsale de <em>Wonder Wheel<\/em> et nous n\u2019irons pas plus loin dans notre pr\u00e9sentation au risque d\u2019en g\u00e2cher le d\u00e9nouement.<\/p>\n<h3>Sc\u00e8nes de la vie conjugale<\/h3>\n<p>Il y a dans <em>Wonder Wheel<\/em> quelque chose de bergmanien, et il ne peut s\u2019agir d\u2019un hasard tant on conna\u00eet l\u2019admiration que voue Woody Allen pour le cin\u00e9aste su\u00e9dois. Certaines s\u00e9quences, notamment la f\u00eate d\u2019anniversaire ou les discussions entre les \u00e9poux, ne sont pas sans rappeler, par leur r\u00e9alisme touchant, les&nbsp;<em>Sc\u00e8nes de la vie conjugale<\/em> (1974) d\u2019Ingmar Bergman. Si dans le cas pr\u00e9sent on ne peut nullement parler de huis clos, les unit\u00e9s de lieu se font rares et, pourrait-on dire, se comptent sur les doigts de la main.<\/p>\n<p>On sent ainsi que le r\u00e9alisateur a tenu \u00e0 centrer son attention sur la mise en sc\u00e8ne, sur le sens de l\u2019espace et la lumi\u00e8re. Un effort bienvenu auquel s\u2019associe le talent de Vittorio Storaro (<em>Apocalypse now<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Reds<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>The Last Emperor<\/em>), directeur de la photographie. Puisque dans <em>Wonder Wheel<\/em> l\u2019image est particuli\u00e8rement soign\u00e9e, rehauss\u00e9e d\u2019un filtre color\u00e9, elle participe \u00e0 ce voyage temporel auquel nous invite le r\u00e9alisateur. Si l\u2019effet avait \u00e9t\u00e9 garanti avec <em>Magic in the Moonlight<\/em> (2014) and <em>Caf\u00e9 Society <\/em>(2016), nous voil\u00e0 \u00e0 nouveau comme Gil de <em>Midnight in Paris <\/em>(2011), transport\u00e9s \u00e0 travers le temps.<\/p>\n<h3>Femmes au bord de la crise de nerfs<\/h3>\n<p>Mais cette fois, ce n\u2019est pas Ernest Hemingway ou Francis Scott Fitzgerald que le spectateur s\u2019appr\u00eate \u00e0 rencontrer, mais une femme au bord de la crise de nerfs. Ce r\u00f4le, comme dans <em>Revolutionary Road<\/em> (2008) de Sam Mendes, Kate Winslet l\u2019interpr\u00e8te habilement. Particuli\u00e8rement convaincante, l\u2019actrice donne au personnage de Ginny une v\u00e9ritable profondeur, et l\u2019on ne peut \u00eatre qu\u2019attendri lorsqu\u2019on la voit, comme une jeune fille, faire des sc\u00e8nes de jalousie \u00e0 son amant. Un amant jou\u00e9 par un improbable Justin Timberlake (premi\u00e8re collaboration avec le r\u00e9alisateur) qui, contre toute attente, parvient \u00e0 charmer la cam\u00e9ra et \u00e0 s\u2019en tirer avec les honneurs. Et il en est de m\u00eame pour l\u2019ensemble de la distribution (Jim Beluschi, Juno Temple, Jack Gore) qui fait preuve d\u2019une remarquable solidit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Enfin, si l\u2019humour, les r\u00e9flexions philosophiques et la magie figurent des constantes transcendantes de l\u2019univers allenien, il n\u2019en demeure pas moins qu\u2019avec <em>Wonder Wheel<\/em> l\u2019humour se fait davantage grin\u00e7ant; acide. Ainsi, plus ironique que jamais, c\u2019est entre les <em>concertos<\/em> des limonaires, des \u00e9clats de rire, des tirs \u00e0 la carabine et autres odeurs de barbe \u00e0 papa que s\u2019\u00e9chafaude la trag\u00e9die. Le contraste en est d\u2019autant plus fulgurant et nous rappelle que certains int\u00e9rieurs recelent des ab\u00eemes de tristesse et de d\u00e9sespoir. Et il en est de m\u00eame de l\u2019emballage philosophique auquel M.&nbsp;Allen nous avait habitu\u00e9s; loin de <em>Crimes and Misdemeanors <\/em>(1989) ou encore <em>Match point<\/em> (2005), le r\u00e9alisateur se fait davantage conteur que n\u00e9vros\u00e9 en s\u00e9ance de psychanalyse.<\/p>\n<p>Quelque part, la r\u00e9flexion se fait ici hors champ; puisque c\u2019est avant tout une histoire que nous livre le r\u00e9alisateur. Si celle-ci, heureusement, \u00e9vite la lourdeur, la fresque dress\u00e9e par le r\u00e9alisateur n\u2019en est pas moins touchante et se fait parfois m\u00eame dr\u00f4le. Quant \u00e0 la magie de Woody Allen, si elle n\u2019\u00e9tait pas v\u00e9ritablement pr\u00e9sente dans ce long-m\u00e9trage, encore une fois, elle a op\u00e9r\u00e9; en effet, \u00e0 la sortie de la s\u00e9ance, il nous semblait que nous aussi, nous avions \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 Coney Island.
