Cinema Wednesdays - Loris S. Musumeci<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abMy name is Lady Bird. I baptized myself.\u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Last year at Sacramento Catholic High School before college. Christine (Saoirse Ronan), who rebelliously calls herself Lady Bird, dreams of studying at a top university and leaving her dingy town behind. She wants more; more freedom, more upheaval, more passion. Still a virgin, she craves bohemian love, combining the tenderness and wildness of the hottest romances.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Opposing her is her mother (Laurie Metcalf). This nurse works hard to provide her family with a decent life. Education costs are high; living is expensive. What's more, her father has lost his job. Faced with her daughter's exuberance, the mother never misses an opportunity to reframe her. But how do you reframe a Lady Bird whose only wish is to get away from it all? Their endless quarrels lead to serious rifts, even though they reflect a deep affection between the two women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who hasn't?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The young Greta Gerwig talks about family in her film, just as she deals with adolescence, rebellion, the end of high school and first love. These are recurring themes, yet they always retain their place in the screenplays. Everyone's experience is reflected. Who hasn't felt oppressed by their family, no matter how benevolent? Who hasn't felt ashamed of their parents, no matter how normal? Who hasn't dreamed of experiencing the most exceptional love in the world? Who hasn't experienced its bitter failure? Who hasn't cried?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The film's strength and weakness lie in its story and its banality. The director touches on the universal. In this way, she reaches the adolescent in everyone. At the same time, she has a real talent for evocation, which is also supported by Saorise Ronan's acting. Lady Bird succeeds in making the viewer aware of one of the most contradictory feelings in human existence: that of having lived through everything, of having reached a milestone at the end of high school under the sign of proud accomplishment, while feeling that there is still everything left to live, to discover, to suffer. All this, cradled in the joyous, nostalgic music of a prom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparent grain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although Greta Gerwig offers a well-constructed plot based on an initial situation, peripatetic events and a concluding point with an opening, she gets stuck in this pattern, paying the price for her choice of banality. Aside from a few comic surprises, the story is a foregone conclusion. This may seem normal for a film about family and adolescence. It's just that.., Lady Bird<\/em> doesn't cross any boundaries: mother and daughter fight, father is the gentle, calm man who calms things down, the family is cheesy but happy, boyfriends disappoint, and so it goes. What's needed is something to pierce the smooth fabric of American films and offer a touch of novelty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a technical point of view, there's plenty to make up for the script's shortcomings. Without setting itself up as a stylistic monument, the images are beautiful and pleasant from start to finish. The photography is marked by an apparent grain, which is very elegant and gives the old school<\/em> to the feature film during its screening. Also, the recurring blue color, more or less luminous, marks a graphic rhythm from scene to scene, following Lady Bird's adventure as she flies towards a sky of freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
