Fribourg International Film Festival - Loris S. Musumeci<\/i><\/p>\n

\u00abHe might have lived longer, but he lived fully.\u00bb<\/p>\n

The bed creaks. Yoshiko and her boyfriend engage in deep sexual exercises. They are sweating. Suddenly, the telephone rings. The girl stops to answer it. Sad news. From the window, she tells her father that \u00abGrandpa has died. Back at her partner's house, she receives a kindly \u00bbDo you want to stop?.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Toute la famille est mal \u00e0 l\u2019aise\u00a0; personne ne sait que dire. A l\u2019h\u00f4pital, le p\u00e8re de Yoshiko et son fr\u00e8re se disputent\u00a0: ils se renvoient manquements et irresponsabilit\u00e9s. Yoshiko, elle, retrouve pour l’occasion sa cousine avec joie, mais les deux s\u2019\u00e9changent un \u00ab\u00a0\u00e7a fait longtemps\u00a0\u00bb, tr\u00e8s r\u00e9v\u00e9lateur de l\u2019\u00e9tat de la famille. Avec la vie, le travail, les divorces et compagnie, la famille du d\u00e9funt grand-p\u00e8re Isao s\u2019est d\u00e9cid\u00e9ment effrit\u00e9e. Comme si la situation n\u2019\u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 pas assez compliqu\u00e9e, il faut d\u00e9sormais encore penser \u00e0 caser la grand-m\u00e8re, s\u00e9nile.<\/p>\n

A kitsch<\/em> grandiose<\/h3>\n

Unlike the other feature films in the international competition at the Fribourg International Film Festival, Goodbye Grandpa!<\/em> doesn't bank its success on cinematography. Apart from a few elegant shots in the service of tragi-comedy - notably the one in which the two cousins stand smoking against a grate - the film is a collection of scenes with images of a kind of kitsch<\/em> grandiose. For some, it's a Japanese touch; for others, it's an opportunity to vomit in the face of meadows of green that are as overdone and digital as they are disgusting.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, Yukihiro Morigaki's direction is much more in tune with the subject matter. He exposes the drama of Western, city-dwelling families, to which Yoshiko's family totally belongs. After all, the Japanese live in the West, even though they're in the far east of the globe. Brothers don't usually speak to each other, except to fight over inheritance. Cousins, for their part, lose all proximity: some live here, others there. As a result, \u00abweddings and funerals are always the same family reunions.\u00bb<\/p>\n

L’individu et la famille<\/h3>\n

The story, without any modesty, shows the modern individual in the face of that painful, suffocating group called the family. Yoshiko's brother studies in the city; his clothes are very fashionable and he looks effeminate. Unsurprisingly, the family laughs at him. Yoshiko's cousin, on the other hand, is an almost sickly introvert. Unsurprisingly, the family laughs at him. Yoshiko's uncle has been left by his wife because, according to his own brother, he's \u2019a poor nerd\u00ab. Unsurprisingly, the family laughs at him.<\/p>\n

Anyone could relate to the model of the mocked loser in the family. Indeed, it's the family members' faults that are highlighted. But at the same time, the challenge for all the protagonists, starting with Yoshiko, is to find the qualities in their parents too, so as to love the brother, cousin, uncle or father as he is. Morigaki's script captures the quest well, with a rather cathartic effect.<\/p>\n

The good old days<\/h3>\n

Finally, the figure of the grandmother says a lot about how we regard the elderly. Not only does Goodbye Grandpa!<\/em> d\u00e9nonce, de mani\u00e8re un peu facile tout de m\u00eame, leur d\u00e9nigrement, mais il soutient la lucidit\u00e9 dont ils font souvent preuve malgr\u00e9 la s\u00e9nilit\u00e9. Leur simple pr\u00e9sence, d\u2019ailleurs, est \u00e9rig\u00e9e en tr\u00e9sor, dans la mesure o\u00f9 elle provoque un tant soit peu de tendresse, rem\u00e9morant aux g\u00e9n\u00e9rations qui suivent le temps de l\u2019enfance. Le temps o\u00f9 famille et solidarit\u00e9 ne faisaient qu’un.<\/p>\n

Le film vaut donc la peine d\u2019\u00eatre visionn\u00e9 pour ces quelques bons points. A ajouter\u00a0: son habilet\u00e9 \u00e0 traiter de la mort dans un long-m\u00e9trage consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme une com\u00e9die \u00e0 humour noir. Pour le reste, rien d’original, rien de puissant, rien de transcendant, rien de mortel.<\/p>\n

\u00abOur family is twisted, and so is this funeral.\u00bb<\/p>\n
