And she sings. The scorpion mantra.\u00bb Aadam<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the soft hollows of the dunes in Rajasthan's vast desert region rises a slow chant. \u00abO my master, hear my prayer\u00bb, intones Nooran (Golshifteh Farahani), crouching at the bedside of a dying man stung by a scorpion. The whole village listens, as if bewitched by the voice carried through the night by the wind, which stirs the grains of fine, beige sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire la suite de la critique (en libre acc\u00e8s)-->\n\n\n\n<p>Un peu \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cart, Aadam (Irrfan Khan) se l\u00e8ve, comme saisi par la beaut\u00e9 du chant et des traits fins de la gu\u00e9risseuse. Lentement, il reprend place alors qu\u2019\u00e0 ses yeux monte une mar\u00e9e de larmes. Son compagnon de route, apparemment lass\u00e9 de suivre la farouche Nooran, se montre insensible aux chants ancestraux qu\u2019elle entonne sans crainte ni voile afin de gu\u00e9rir les hommes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Une nuit, alors qu\u2019elle est appel\u00e9e par un jeune gar\u00e7on dans le but de sauver un homme atteint par le venin d\u2019un scorpion, ni dieux ni astres ne se manifestent pour sauver Nooran, prise au pi\u00e8ge. Elle perd la bataille. Viol\u00e9e et bafou\u00e9e, \u00abarrach\u00e9e \u00e0 elle-m\u00eame\u00bb, elle se voit expuls\u00e9e de son village sans m\u00e9nagement et part \u00e0 la recherche de son chant, disparu en m\u00eame temps que cette partie d\u2019elle qui la faisait femme et gu\u00e9risseuse, traductrice et interpr\u00e8te des dieux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pourtant, l\u2019ombre \u00e9perdument amoureuse d\u2019Aadam ne perd jamais la trace de la presque magicienne. Abandonn\u00e9e de tous et surtout de sa grand-m\u00e8re qui lui a tout appris, \u00e9clips\u00e9e elle aussi la nuit du drame, Nooran accepte de se marier \u00e0 celui qu\u2019elle avait eu la force de rejeter et d\u2019ignorer longtemps durant. Pour autant, il n\u2019ose la toucher mais r\u00eave, tout en observant son visage baign\u00e9 de lune, d\u2019obtenir un jour sa confiance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Nooran s\u2019habitue, avec un temps dont on ne conna\u00eet la dur\u00e9e et qui ne compte plus, \u00e0 la vie de famille et parvient \u00e0 se faire aimer de la fille d\u2019Aadam. L\u2019esp\u00e9rance et la force renouvel\u00e9es s\u2019\u00e9croulent soudain, lorsqu\u2019elle apprend de son agresseur une v\u00e9rit\u00e9 bousculant tout ce qui encore lui subsistait.&nbsp;Fi\u00e8re, Nooran laisse mourir le bandit bient\u00f4t enseveli de ses mains sous la poudre beige s\u2019\u00e9tirant \u00e0 l\u2019infini, et entreprend une vengeance \u00e0 la hauteur de l\u2019atrocit\u00e9 subie quelque temps auparavant dans les ab\u00eemes insondables du d\u00e9sert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Un voyage musical initiatique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Il est certain que, lorsque l\u2019on s\u2019int\u00e9resse \u00e0 l\u2019\u00a0\u00abautre\u00bb \u2013 aux diff\u00e9rentes mani\u00e8res de vivre, de soigner, de manger, aux traditions de l\u2019alt\u00e9rit\u00e9 ou \u00e0 ses plus r\u00e9centes habitudes \u2013 l\u2019ouverture d\u2019esprit se voit augment\u00e9e mais surtout n\u00e9cessaire d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but, afin d\u2019accueillir sans jugements ce que cet \u00abdautre\u00bb a \u00e0 proposer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u2019est ce qu\u2019il se passe avec <em>Le Chant des scorpions<\/em>, d\u00e8s les premi\u00e8res secondes o\u00f9 rien ne bouge sur l\u2019\u00e9cran noir, alors qu\u2019une musique venue d\u2019un ailleurs intemporel d\u00e9bute et que quelques noms commencent \u00e0 d\u00e9filer. Les notes et la lenteur de leur succession sont comme une douleur lancinante qui ne nous quitte pas. Il semble \u00e9vident que la simple histoire d\u2019amour \u00e0 laquelle nous nous attendions sera bien plus saisissante que nous n\u2019aurions pu l\u2019imaginer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Comme un appel \u00e0 la vie lanc\u00e9 des tr\u00e9fonds de l\u2019\u00e2me, Nooran d\u00e9clame ces pri\u00e8res chant\u00e9es par une voix non sans failles mais transportant l\u2019esprit au milieu du d\u00e9sert des scorpions. A chaque note, chaque mouvement de tonalit\u00e9, nous qui n\u2019avions jamais entendu de pareils chants, nous nous sentons tout d\u2019abord presque g\u00ean\u00e9s par tant d\u2019authenticit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cependant, l\u2019investissement du personnage de Nooran, sa jeunesse, et son r\u00f4le de gu\u00e9risseuse, transpercent les entraves et nous emm\u00e8nent dans ce fabuleux voyage musical. Toujours pr\u00e9sente m\u00eame lorsque la jeune femme perd son chant, la musique tend \u00e0 exprimer les \u00e9motions tout autant qu\u2019\u00e0 annoncer les \u00e9v\u00e9nements ou vocations des personnages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La pratique ancestrale que Nooran tient de sa grand-m\u00e8re pr\u00e9sente un lien imm\u00e9morial avec les dieux et les anciens de ce d\u00e9sert du Rajasthan. Ecouter ces chants accompagn\u00e9s d\u2019instruments typiques tels que le <em>sarangi<\/em> or the <em>tabla<\/em>, c\u2019est \u00eatre t\u00e9moin de l\u2019importance et de la beaut\u00e9 qu\u2019ont les croyances et les pratiques spirituelles, alors m\u00eame qu\u2019en Europe elles tendent \u00e0 s\u2019\u00e9tioler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La futilit\u00e9 du temps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Alors que les sc\u00e8nes de nuit et de jour se succ\u00e8dent, toutes plus belles les unes que les autres, apportant chacune une lumi\u00e8re diff\u00e9rente, m\u00e9lange des teintes beige du sable aux couleurs vari\u00e9es des saris f\u00e9minins ou des turbans port\u00e9s par certains hommes, le temps n\u2019a plus d\u2019importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Nous ne saurions d\u2019ailleurs pas le suivre ni le comprendre, dans ce film d\u2019Anup Singh. Rel\u00e9gu\u00e9 au second plan par des sc\u00e8nes longues, compos\u00e9es parfois d\u2019une grande quantit\u00e9 de plans-s\u00e9quences et proposant plusieurs points de vue s\u2019encha\u00eenant inlassablement, l\u2019emprise des heures, des jours, des nuits, s\u2019affaiblit jusqu\u2019\u00e0 nous faire accepter que des mois entiers s\u2019\u00e9coulent entre deux sc\u00e8nes et qu\u2019il en faille parfois cinq pour d\u00e9crire une journ\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au vu de la longueur du film \u2013 deux heures \u2013 il \u00e9tait effectivement n\u00e9cessaire de faire oublier le temps aux spectateurs \u00e9galement. Malgr\u00e9 tout, c\u2019est surtout la beaut\u00e9 d\u2019un paysage lointain et m\u00e9connu, celle du visage de Golshifteh Farahani et de la luminosit\u00e9 prodigieuse contenue dans les images qui maintiennent en haleine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">De la vie sociale au Rajasthan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Un \u00e9l\u00e9ment par-dessus tous les autres donne \u00e0 ce film sa grandeur: l\u2019authenticit\u00e9 des acteurs qui permet la d\u00e9couverte \u00e9bahie de la vie sociale et pratique dans le d\u00e9sert du Rajasthan. Pour les besoins du film, Golshifteh Farahani a appris la phon\u00e9tique hindi, et l\u2019absence de doublage plonge plus encore dans cette soci\u00e9t\u00e9 indienne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans la relation de profonde intimit\u00e9 liant la jeune Nooran \u00e0 sa grand-m\u00e8re, qu\u2019elle appelle affectueusement \u00abAmma\u00bb, se cachent de multiples d\u00e9tails et les finesses d\u2019un rapport ma\u00eetre-\u00e9l\u00e8ve. On y retrouve le respect in\u00e9branlable pour les a\u00efeux, et la duret\u00e9 d\u2019Amma \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de sa petite fille refl\u00e8te cette conscience que la spiritualit\u00e9 demande de la rigueur et du sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>En tant que ma\u00eetre, Amma est froide, intraitable, comme lorsqu\u2019elle envoie Nooran chanter dans les dunes en pleine nuit, lui proclamant de sages paroles tout en lui tirant l\u2019oreille \u00e0 lui en faire mal&nbsp;; comme lorsqu\u2019elle lui ass\u00e8ne que, bient\u00f4t, il lui faudra quitter les lieux et se marier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Par ailleurs, les sujets du viol et de la place de la femme dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 font in\u00e9vitablement partie des th\u00e9matiques majeures du film, et la sc\u00e8ne montrant Nooran d\u00e9ambulant avec un tissu \u00e9pais masquant son visage, suivie directement de l\u2019annonce, par deux femmes \u00e2g\u00e9es du village, de son expulsion, portent \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran l\u2019indiff\u00e9rence et le regard infiniment dur port\u00e9 sur ces femmes que d\u2019autres ont arrach\u00e9es \u00e0 elles-m\u00eames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En d\u00e9finitive, la qualit\u00e9 esth\u00e9tique du film, sa bande-son imposant la patience, attisant la curiosit\u00e9, permettent aux cent-vingt minutes de s\u2019\u00e9couler sans ennui. Malgr\u00e9 tout, nous avons not\u00e9 la langueur de certaines sc\u00e8nes, et l\u2019incertitude de leur utilit\u00e9.
