{"id":16282,"date":"2018-07-13T21:00:41","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T20:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/?p=16282"},"modified":"2025-12-04T22:40:28","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T21:40:28","slug":"profile-not-normal-but-banal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/en\/cinema\/films\/profile-not-normal-but-banal\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00abProfile: not normal, but commonplace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><i><span class=\"s1\">Neuch\u00e2tel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) -\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/en\/tag\/thierry-fivaz\/\">Thierry Fivaz<\/a><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Presented this Tuesday, July 10 at NIFFF in the \u00abFilms of the third kind\u00bb category,\u00a0<\/span><i><span class=\"s1\">Profile<\/span><\/i> <span class=\"s1\">by Timur Bekmambetov offers a unique yet ordinary cinematic experience.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When it comes to presenting his film, Timur Bekmambetov doesn't beat about the bush. For the director, it's all about<i>\u00a0<\/i>a true cinematic experience, something never seen before! And it's hard to argue with the director, since no feature film has ever taken such a form. In fact, it's the form<\/span>, <span class=\"s1\">more than the scenario<\/span>,<span class=\"s1\"> that sets us apart\u00a0<i>Profile<\/i> and puts it in a category of its own, detached from the others. However, if Bekmambetov's tour de force is anything to go by<i>\u00a0<\/i>Will other directors follow in his footsteps? Nothing is less certain.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"p3 wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"s1\">Everyday life before our eyes<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The form that Bekmambetov's film takes is as follows: imagine the office (or <i>desktop<\/i>) of your Mac - you know, the space where piles of files and documents line up and wait to be put away. Well, it's in this space that the whole film takes place.<\/span>This one,<span class=\"s1\"> in fact, consists of a succession of video screen captures <\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">(ndl<\/span>r: <span class=\"s1\">what Bekmambetov calls\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\"><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dK39yLGSRw8&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\"><span class=\"s2\">Screen Life<\/span><\/a><\/i><\/span><em><span class=\"s1\">)<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s1\">. In short, it is, as some software programs allow, a series of video recordings of what is happening on a computer screen. <\/span>- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o1AOP0FkJDk&amp;frags=pl%2Cwn\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s2\">many examples, including tutorials, are produced in the same way and can be viewed on YouTube<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The narrative is more classic, linear. Each <i>sequence<\/i> of the film corresponds to a day or an event<\/span>\u00e9<span class=\"s1\">nement. The film opens on day 1 and, at irregular intervals, moves on to day 5, then day 8.<\/span>,<span class=\"s1\"> etc., as if we were flying over a diary that didn't belong to us. The film's rhythm<\/span>, <span class=\"s1\">for its part<\/span>, <span class=\"s1\">as Skype, Facetime and other text messages appear on the screen. <i>via<\/i> pop-up windows or other audible and\/or visual notifications. The voices we hear are those coming from applications that require the microphone to be activated (such as Skype or Facetime). <\/span>- <span class=\"s1\">including that of the computer owner<\/span> -<span class=\"s1\"> which are those we only see via applications requiring camera activation. Added to this are the videos we receive and open, which sometimes give us the impression of watching an \u00abordinary\u00bb film.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While this is the first time a feature-length film has actually taken on such a form, for many of us it's a particularly familiar sight; since it's an identical spectacle we observe every day as we sit at our desks. So, once we've got over the astonishment of seeing such a familiar sight brought to such a large screen<\/span>, <span class=\"s1\">or about 10 <\/span>minutes<span class=\"s1\">, the experience is mostly ordinary, even banal<\/span>,<span class=\"s1\"> and even becomes annoying, but the annoyance comes mainly from the script.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"p3 wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"s1\">Beauty and the beast<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>Profile<\/em> is inspired by the book <i>In the skin of a jihadist<\/i>\u00a0by French journalist Anna Erelle. Like the French journalist, the film tells the story of Amy Whittaker (Valene Kane), an English journalist who tries (and succeeds) <em>via<\/em> Facebook to get in touch with a young Islamic State recruiter (Shazad Latif). While the initial aim was to gather as much information as possible about the terrorist organization, particularly in terms of how recruiters operate, the situation quickly degenerated. After numerous exchanges <em>via<\/em> Skype and other text messages (hence the film's form), the young woman falls in love with, or at least feels a deep affection for, the young man.\u00a0<i>jihadist. <\/i>It's like a dream!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But beyond a screenplay that paints an unflattering portrait of the female gender <\/span>- <span class=\"s1\">the film shows a journalist who is profoundly stupid, emotionally weak and naive.<\/span>s<span class=\"s1\"> recoveries; q<\/span>hat are the intentions of such a film? Is it to show that \u00abthe bad guys\u00a0<i>jihadists<\/i>\u00bbOr is it to show that even slightly educated people can fall prey to their schemes? Or is it to show that even slightly educated individuals can fall into their trap? The two propositions are not mutually exclusive, but who really doubted it? No matter what Sergio Leone says, it's self-evident that the world can't be divided into two categories, with the good guys on one side and the bad guys on the other. Does it make sense, then, to make a film about it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, where <em>Profile<\/em> can be interesting, it's because of its documentary aspect, which resembles a testimonial film. However, we can only regret the fact that we seem to be<\/span>,<span class=\"s1\"> like its director, put more emphasis on the form of the <i>Profile<\/i>\u00a0than its content. A novel but banal form, which nonetheless seems more interesting to exploit than unnecessarily harsh, unsettling and boring content once the first half is over.<\/span>-<span class=\"s1\">hour. A content that, if not a genuine<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">fiction, could become a fantastic means of prevention and awareness-raising. As for the promised cinematic experience, we'll pass.<\/span>.
