The film is triggered by Antoine's discovery of a letter revealing a secret from the past that has made him angry. From his native Tarn, he sets off for Tuscany. His two acolytes, accompanied by Sophie, Antoine's six-months pregnant granddaughter, set off in pursuit to prevent him from committing a crime of passion... fifty years later!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>The old furnaces<\/em>\u00a0de Christophe Duthuron est un \u00e9ni\u00e8me exemple de ce que la com\u00e9die fran\u00e7aise a de beau \u00e0 offrir\u00a0\u2013 pas la troupe th\u00e9\u00e2trale, entendons-nous, qui offre aussi de belles choses, mais le genre cin\u00e9matographique. La distribution explique en grande partie le succ\u00e8s dans les salles : Pierre Richard, que l\u2019on avait un peu perdu de vue, Eddie Mitchell, tr\u00e8s appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 en tant qu\u2019acteur par le grand public\u00a0\u2013 peut-\u00eatre m\u00eame plus qu\u2019en tant que chanteur\u00a0\u2013 et le moins connu Roland Giraud. Mais la t\u00e2che du critique est de montrer en quoi le film, \u00e0 lui seul, est int\u00e9ressant, ou inint\u00e9ressant.<\/p>\n<p>Puisque nous en parlons : le d\u00e9but du film est \u00e0 mon sens rat\u00e9. L\u2019art du d\u00e9but est important dans une \u0153uvre d\u2019art qui s\u2019\u00e9tend dans le temps, comme la fin d\u2019ailleurs, qui elle sera r\u00e9ussie. Heureusement, la vingt-et-uni\u00e8me seconde y rem\u00e9die : on sait qu\u2019on va rire, beaucoup rire, dans cette com\u00e9die. D\u00e9cid\u00e9ment, ce genre n\u2019en a pas fini de nous servir en merveilles. Un exemple de dialogue hilarant : \u00ab Il fait quoi comme musique ?\u00a0\u2013 Je te souhaite de ne pas le savoir.\u00a0\u00bb La mani\u00e8re dont est tourn\u00e9e la sc\u00e8ne de l\u2019enterrement, avec toutes les hypocrisies qui lui sont intrins\u00e8ques et les vieilles histoires de village qui seront capitales dans le film, est repr\u00e9sentative d\u2019une ironie \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise.<\/p>\n<p>Naturellement, pas de com\u00e9die de cet h\u00e9ritage sans dimension dramatique, ou au moins \u00e9mouvante : tel est le cas d\u2019un moment du film o\u00f9 les trois comp\u00e8res se revoient jeunots, courant dans les champs de leur enfance. Ainsi en est-il \u00e9galement du comique tr\u00e8s attendrissant de l\u2019ancien patron s\u00e9nile incarn\u00e9 par Henri Guybet. D\u2019autres dimensions se voulant touchantes dans le film sont pour leur part moins r\u00e9ussies, telle que l\u2019abondance de cordes dans la bande-son. De m\u00eame, il est \u00e0 regretter la performance un peu moins convaincante que pr\u00e9vue d\u2019Eddie Mitchell, m\u00eame s\u2019il reste dans son \u00e9l\u00e9ment.<\/p>\n<p>Quant \u00e0 la photographie, une r\u00e9elle recherche esth\u00e9tique ressort des <em>Vieux fourneaux<\/em>, surtout dans le traitement formel des <em>flashbacks<\/em> ou de l\u2019imaginaire des personnages.\u00a0Fait marquant dans le message social du film, la belle cause de la gauche, la vraie gauche, la vieille gauche, celle des droits des travailleurs, bien loin des revendications arc-en-ciel et \u00ab bobo-linguistiques\u00a0\u00bb des socialistes d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui. Enfin, c\u2019est l\u2019universalit\u00e9 de ce long-m\u00e9trage qui le rend digne de sa lign\u00e9e : la d\u00e9localisation d\u2019une industrie de province, les vieilles histoires de l\u2019\u00e9cole primaire, le tragique de la vie (magnifique occurence d\u2019Eddie Mitchell : \u00ab chaque heure blesse, la derni\u00e8re tue\u00a0\u00bb, et c\u2019est pour \u00e7a que c\u2019est
