Musumeci<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00abI just wanted to know how you were doing after the loss of your husband.\u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Portraits of four family lives follow one another, interspersed with a hotly contested robbery scene. The four families are those of the four robbers. Caught red-handed, they are surrounded by the police after a chase. The episode ends in gunfire from the relentless police. The death of the four bandits now leaves four widows. Despite their grief, they're not out of the woods yet. The local African-American mafia is keen for the four women to pay off some debts.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Un film f\u00e9ministe<\/h3>\n<p>Au vu du synopsis, on imagine directement qu\u2019on a affaire \u00e0 un film f\u00e9ministe, avec les lourdeurs que cela implique. D\u2019autant qu\u2019il s\u2019agit en grande partie d\u2019un film d\u2019action. Une pr\u00e9cision s\u2019impose: ce ne sont pas les films f\u00e9ministes qui sont lourds, ni m\u00eame les films d\u2019action. Cependant, quand le septi\u00e8me art m\u00eale ces deux genres, il ne peut souvent pas s\u2019emp\u00eacher la surench\u00e8re; en multipliant les plans de femmes fatales en petite robe sexy et pistolet \u00e0 la main. Suffit-il de songer \u00e0 la s\u00e9rie <em>Charlie\u2019s Angels\u00a0<\/em>(<em>Dr\u00f4les de dames<\/em>) ou aux films <em>Ocean\u2019s<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Les Veuves\u00a0<\/em>donne <em>a priori\u00a0<\/em>\u00e0 penser qu\u2019en effet le spectateur va se retrouver assailli de s\u00e9quences au ralenti avec quatre femmes qui marchent c\u00f4te \u00e0 c\u00f4te, les cheveux au vent, lunettes de soleil bien pos\u00e9es sur le nez, chauss\u00e9es par des bottines d\u2019espionnes et orn\u00e9es de flammes en arri\u00e8re-plan. Il se trouve cependant que Steve McQueen a choisi de r\u00e9aliser un film plus subtil.<\/p>\n<p>Certainement, il y a f\u00e9minisme, mais amen\u00e9 d\u2019une mani\u00e8re habile et r\u00e9fl\u00e9chie. Les quatre femmes en question sont fortes, courageuses et astucieuses. Elles sont belles. Et fragiles. Parfois, elles c\u00e8dent aux larmes, comme elles croulent momentan\u00e9ment dans la peur ou le d\u00e9sespoir. La finesse dans la construction de ces quatre personnages couvre le film de cr\u00e9dibilit\u00e9, de justesse, et valorise vraiment les femmes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18025\" style=\"width: 3518px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18025\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18025\" src=\"http:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2018-Twentieth-Century-Fox-Film-Corporation-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"2018 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation (3)\" width=\"3508\" height=\"2334\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L&#8217;excellente Michelle Rodriguez et la sublime Elizabeth Debicki dans \u00abLes Veuves\u00bb, un film de Steve McQueen, \u00a9 Twentieth Century Fox<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Il ne faut pas oublier en outre que le r\u00e9alisateur s\u2019attaque \u00e0 un sujet qui peut appara\u00eetre aujourd\u2019hui quelque peu d\u00e9suet, \u00e0 savoir le veuvage. Oui, une \u00e9pouse peut tout \u00e0 fait s\u2019en sortir sans mari, cela va de soi. Le film a n\u00e9anmoins l\u2019audace de montrer \u00e0 quel point tout se complique lorsqu\u2019une femme perd son \u00e9poux et doit prendre en charge \u00e0 elle seule les enfants. Aussi, la th\u00e9matique du veuvage donne d\u2019embl\u00e9e au long-m\u00e9trage sa dimension tragique.<\/p>\n<p>A ce propos, on note une originalit\u00e9 louable de la part du r\u00e9alisateur qui a offert sur l\u2019\u00e9cran diff\u00e9rentes exp\u00e9riences du tragique selon les cultures familiales des veuves, notamment \u00e0 travers les rites fun\u00e9raires. De la sobri\u00e9t\u00e9 blanche et protestante pour honorer les d\u00e9pouilles du chef de gang, on passe sans transition \u00e0 l\u2019agitation toute catholique, passionnelle et hispanique de l\u2019enterrement de l\u2019un des membres du groupe de criminels. En fait, les portraits des quatre femmes sont compl\u00e9t\u00e9s par la culture d\u2019origine du mari de chacune.<\/p>\n<h3>Sans manich\u00e9isme<\/h3>\n<p>En parall\u00e8le, pour un premier temps, le spectateur assiste \u00e0 une autre histoire: celle d\u2019une \u00e9lection pr\u00e9sidentielle qui se trame \u00e0 la mairie d\u2019un quartier populaire de Chicago. Un candidat blanc affronte un candidat noir. Deux mondes, deux cultures, deux mani\u00e8res d\u2019envisager la foi. En somme, deux styles bien diff\u00e9rents. L\u00e0 encore, le film fait preuve d\u2019intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Il ne laisse de fait aucune place au manich\u00e9isme qui r\u00e9duirait le candidat blanc \u00e0 un riche bourgeois raciste et corrompu, et \u00e9l\u00e8verait le candidat noir \u00e0 un pauvre repr\u00e9sentant des minorit\u00e9s, honn\u00eate et victime des magouilles de son adversaire. Les deux sont l\u00e9gitimes. Le sc\u00e9nario les montre, chacun \u00e0 leur tour, touchants et vrais; comme il les montre aussi en escrocs quand il s\u2019agit d\u2019argent.<\/p>\n<h3>Un travail formel efficace<\/h3>\n<p>If <em>Les Veuves\u00a0<\/em>est remarquable au niveau du fond, la forme n\u2019est pas en reste. M\u00eame si certains proc\u00e9d\u00e9s, comme celui de filmer les personnages \u00e0 travers les reflets d\u2019un miroir ou d\u2019une fen\u00eatre, sont un peu p\u00e9nibles, trop r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9s et pas forc\u00e9ment tr\u00e8s efficaces, il faut reconna\u00eetre \u00e0 Steve McQueen le m\u00e9rite d\u2019avoir op\u00e9r\u00e9 une recherche esth\u00e9tique pour un genre de cin\u00e9ma qui s\u2019en passe en principe. D\u2019ailleurs, il est parvenu \u00e0 rendre la cam\u00e9ra tr\u00e8s fluide dans ses mouvements, et les images sont agr\u00e9ables \u00e0 regarder.<\/p>\n<p>La forme a encore des qualit\u00e9s \u00e0 offrir du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la musique et du son qui accompagnent les lieux en cr\u00e9ant d\u2019authentiques ambiances. C\u2019est sans doute l\u2019un des points techniques les plus appr\u00e9ciables du film. Chacune des veuves a un profil marqu\u00e9 et bien diff\u00e9rent des autres. Chaque famille est diff\u00e9rente; chaque milieu; chaque communaut\u00e9; chaque intimit\u00e9. Tout cela participe \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des ambiances diff\u00e9rentes qui, au d\u00e9but, distinguent pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment les quatre femmes pour les acheminer ensuite vers une qu\u00eate commune.<\/p>\n<p><em>Les Veuves<\/em>, enfin, raconte dans son ensemble que rien ne peut \u00eatre r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9 du pass\u00e9. Et que, oui, la souffrance d\u2019une veuve est r\u00e9elle. Et que, non, il n\u2019y a pas de solution \u00e0 tout.
