{"id":20486,"date":"2019-05-05T11:26:48","date_gmt":"2019-05-05T10:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/?p=20486"},"modified":"2025-12-04T22:36:38","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T21:36:38","slug":"coda-la-musique-comme-therapie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/en\/cinema\/films\/coda-la-musique-comme-therapie\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00abCODA\u00bb, music as therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/en\/product\/le-regard-libre-n-49\/\">Le Regard Libre N\u00b0 49 <\/a>- Ivan Garcia<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><strong>Documentaire consacr\u00e9 au musicien et compositeur japonais Ryuichi Sakamoto, <em>Coda<\/em> donne \u00e0 voir son rapport \u00e0 la musique, qu\u2019il consid\u00e8re \u00e0 la fois comme une th\u00e9rapie individuelle et un moyen d\u2019\u00e9veiller la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 certaines th\u00e9matiques telles que l\u2019\u00e9cologie ou la nature humaine.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire l\u2019article (libre acc\u00e8s)-->\n\n\n\n<p>En solf\u00e8ge, la coda d\u2019une partition indique la reprise d\u2019une partie musicale d\u00e9j\u00e0 jou\u00e9e permettant ainsi de mener la m\u00e9lodie \u00e0 son terme avec, souvent, quelques subtiles variations. D\u00e8s lors, le titre de ce film prend tout son sens. Certainement moins connu du grand public que Joe Hisaishi, le compositeur des bandes-son d\u2019Hayao Miyazaki, Ryuichi Sakamoto n\u2019en demeure pas moins un personnage fondamental, \u00e0 l\u2019instar d\u2019Hans Zimmer, pour qui s\u2019int\u00e9resse \u00e0 la musique de films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Entre destruction et maladie<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>La sc\u00e8ne d\u2019ouverture du documentaire \u2013 qui dure environ une dizaine de minutes \u2013 plonge le spectateur dans la pr\u00e9fecture de Miyagi, au sein de la zone contamin\u00e9e de Fukushima. A cet endroit, la cam\u00e9ra observe Ryuichi Sakamoto en train d\u2019\u00e9tudier un piano. Selon les rumeurs, cet instrument aurait r\u00e9sist\u00e9 au tsunami. Apr\u00e8s divers tests, le compositeur joue une petite m\u00e9lodie et s\u2019exprime sur le son de l\u2019instrument; la nature \u2013 apprendra-t-on par la suite \u2013 accorde les sons \u00e0 sa guise, lorsqu\u2019elle se manifeste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cependant, malgr\u00e9 cette sorte d\u2019optimisme initiatique, il se rend tr\u00e8s vite dans la zone de Fukushima, afin d\u2019y constater les d\u00e9g\u00e2ts. Puis, il finira par prendre part \u00e0 des manifestations anti-nucl\u00e9aires contre le gouvernement japonais. Nous soulignerons que \u2013 tout au long du documentaire \u2013 la cam\u00e9ra pointe Sakamoto \u2013 ses mains et son visage, notamment \u2013 sans jamais nous montrer directement le point de vue de celui-ci, par le biais d\u2019une focalisation interne; il s\u2019agit d\u2019une sorte de parti pris narratif visant \u00e0 garantir l\u2019objectivit\u00e9 du regard port\u00e9 sur lui. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A la fin de la s\u00e9quence, celui-ci, assist\u00e9 de deux musiciens, tient un concert pour les victimes du tsunami en jouant l\u2019une des musiques qu\u2019il a compos\u00e9e pour le film <em>Furyo<\/em>: <em>Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence<\/em>. Belle, douce et jou\u00e9e de mains de ma\u00eetre, elle s\u00e9duit l\u2019assistance. La musique, dans <em>Coda<\/em>, se cache. Elle attend le spectateur au tournant; seules les musiques du compositeur ont droit \u00e0 leur moment de gloire, car il s\u2019agit de son histoire. Ainsi les r\u00e9f\u00e9rences musicales convoqu\u00e9es renvoient-elles exclusivement \u00e0 Sakamoto et son \u0153uvre; un parti pris quelque peu surprenant mais qui ne d\u00e9range pas vraiment, puisqu\u2019il permet de d\u00e9couvrir un univers m\u00e9connu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr\u00e8s l\u2019ouverture, Ryuichi Sakamato \u2013 qui s\u2019exprime face \u00e0 la cam\u00e9ra \u2013 annonce qu\u2019il est atteint d\u2019un cancer de la gorge et suit un traitement. A partir de cette d\u00e9claration, le musicien affirme que cette exp\u00e9rience \u2013 outre la diminution drastique de son temps de travail et de ses capacit\u00e9s \u2013 lui a donn\u00e9 l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 de tout reprendre \u00e0 z\u00e9ro, afin d\u2019aborder son \u0153uvre de mani\u00e8re diff\u00e9rente. Entre destruction nucl\u00e9aire et maladie, Sakamoto relance la partition de son existence pour en composer la suite. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>R\u00e9trospective et inspirations&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Plut\u00f4t que de revenir sur l\u2019int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 de sa vie, le long-m\u00e9trage cible certains moments-phares de la cr\u00e9ation de l\u2019auteur. Ainsi, la r\u00e9trospective d\u00e9bute par le Japon du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt, \u00e0 la pointe du progr\u00e8s et de la technologie et, musicalement, pr\u00e9curseur de la musique \u00e9lectronique. Peu de monde le sait mais Sakamoto, bien avant de d\u00e9buter en tant que compositeur de musiques de films, faisait partie d\u2019un groupe de musique \u00e9lectronique assez connu: The Yellow Magic Orchestra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Formation avant-gardiste par son utilisation de synth\u00e9tiseurs et d\u2019ordinateurs, il s\u2019agit d\u2019un \u00e9l\u00e9ment incontournable, fondateur de la sc\u00e8ne <em>synthpop<\/em> japonaise. Le documentaire pr\u00e9sente, d\u2019ailleurs, la premi\u00e8re composition de Sakamoto \u2013 pour le groupe \u2013 la chanson <em>Tong Poo<\/em>, une belle m\u00e9lodie \u00e9lectronique, \u00e9labor\u00e9e par des ordinateurs, m\u00eal\u00e9e \u00e0 des images d\u2019archives d\u2019un concert du groupe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grand admirateur du cin\u00e9aste russe Andre\u00ef Tarkovski, Sakamoto construit un projet esth\u00e9tique qui r\u00e9side dans sa volont\u00e9 d\u2019articuler les sons naturels \u2013 le bruit de l\u2019eau, le chant des oiseaux, le son de l\u2019air \u2013 aux sons produits par ses instruments, cr\u00e9ant une \u0153uvre hybride et \u00e9vocatrice. A noter que Tarkovski s\u2019inspire largement des compositions de Jean-S\u00e9bastien Bach pour sa musique \u2013 un point que le compositeur japonais souligne en mentionnant la tonalit\u00e9 m\u00e9lancolique des \u0153uvres de Bach \u2013 et souhaite \u00e9laborer sa propre composition en hommage \u00e0 ces deux personnalit\u00e9s. Nous verrons alors le compositeur composer, avec une vue plongeante sur ses mains et les port\u00e9es, sa m\u00e9lodie, future rivale du cin\u00e9aste russe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tout au long du documentaire, les s\u00e9quences alternent entre prises de vues r\u00e9elles, images d\u2019archives et s\u00e9quences d\u2019autres films dont Sakamoto a \u00e9t\u00e9 inspir\u00e9 ou qu\u2019il a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser. Un point important de l\u2019\u0153uvre r\u00e9side, essentiellement, dans cette r\u00e9f\u00e9rence et cet hommage \u00e0 Andre\u00ef Tarkvoski par le glissement d\u2019une s\u00e9quence de son film <em>Solaris<\/em> dans le long-m\u00e9trage. Aussi, l\u2019une des derni\u00e8res \u0153uvres de Sakamoto prend le titre de <em>Solari<\/em>, tissant ainsi un lien intertextuel envers Tarkovski.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Le compositeur de musiques de films&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr\u00e8s sa courte carri\u00e8re dans la musique \u00e9lectronique, Sakamoto se lance dans la composition de musiques de films. Avec <em>Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence<\/em>, il se voit d\u00e9cerner un prix et le nombre de collaborations augmente. De Tokyo \u00e0 New York en passant par P\u00e9kin, le musicien travaille \u00e0 un rythme effr\u00e9n\u00e9 avec des pointures du cin\u00e9ma telles que Bernardo Bertolucci et Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le protagoniste est \u00e9galement un intellectuel car, dans sa biblioth\u00e8que, l\u2019on trouve de nombreux ouvrages mais \u2013 vraisemblablement \u2013 peu de titres sont rendus visibles par la cam\u00e9ra, sauf celui sur l\u2019artiste Noguchi, sculpteur dont l\u2019esth\u00e9tique moderniste l\u2019a probablement inspir\u00e9. Sakamoto pr\u00e9cise \u00e9galement sa d\u00e9marche cr\u00e9atrice en montrant le nombre d\u2019exemplaires \u2013 en langues diff\u00e9rentes \u2013 qu\u2019il poss\u00e8de du roman de Paul Bowles, <em>The Sheltering Sky<\/em>, adapt\u00e9 par Bertolucci au cin\u00e9ma sous le nom de \u00ab<em>Un th\u00e9 au Sahara<\/em>\u00bb. A cet \u00e9gard, une s\u00e9quence du film de Bertolucci appara\u00eet \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran et le compositeur japonais la commente en mentionnant une anecdote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bertolucci, insatisfait \u00e0 la derni\u00e8re minute d\u2019une composition, avait demand\u00e9 \u00e0 Sakamoto d\u2019en composer une nouvelle de suite, arguant qu\u2019Ennio Morricone pouvait le faire. Le musicien japonais a donc compos\u00e9 \u2013 en trente minutes \u2013 une nouvelle introduction pour le film qui rencontra un grand succ\u00e8s. Adepte des d\u00e9fis, celui-ci avait d\u2019ailleurs compos\u00e9 pour le film <em>The Revenant<\/em> de Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu un th\u00e8me \u00e0 deux sons qui finissent par devenir asynchrones. Le spectateur remarquera alors que les bandes originales de Sakamoto \u00e9veillent en lui des souvenirs, \u00e0 l\u2019instar des images d\u2019archives utilis\u00e9es par la projection. Le long-m\u00e9trage joue, d\u2019ailleurs, sur une musique de fond peu pr\u00e9sente, afin de mieux rendre hommage aux compositions de l\u2019artiste. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vers le d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es nonante, les compositions du musicien int\u00e8grent des revendications politiques et sociales, notamment \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard des \u00e9nergies fossiles et de la bombe atomique. L\u00e9g\u00e8rement sceptique vis-\u00e0-vis du progr\u00e8s technologique et guerrier, ce dernier encourage les individus \u00e0 renouer un lien avec la nature par le biais de l\u2019\u00e9coute et de la musique. Au cours des ann\u00e9es 2000, l\u2019artiste r\u00e9alise \u00e9galement un voyage en Antarctique et en profite pour enregistrer des sons naturels, comme l\u2019\u00e9coulement de l\u2019eau d\u2019un glacier, soulignant ainsi l\u2019importance d\u2019un retour aux sources pour composer. <em>Coda<\/em> se conclut par une s\u00e9quence o\u00f9 Sakamoto mentionne le piano trouv\u00e9 \u00e0 Miyagi; ce dernier a \u00e9t\u00e9 fabriqu\u00e9 et model\u00e9 par l\u2019homme, mais la nature lui a permis de retrouver une musique pure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bien que l\u00e9g\u00e8rement incomplet et plut\u00f4t r\u00e9serv\u00e9 \u00e0 des m\u00e9lomanes, <em>Coda<\/em> ne laisse pas le spectateur indiff\u00e9rent. En choisissant de m\u00ealer judicieusement la d\u00e9marche cr\u00e9atrice de Sakamoto et l\u2019\u00e9coute de ses compositions dans un documentaire, celui-ci consacre l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019un musicien qui fait de la musique une th\u00e9rapie, non seulement \u00e0 son \u00e9gard, mais \u00e9galement pour une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 qui tend \u00e0 ne plus la percevoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Write to
