Lizards<\/em> is a magnificent account by a member of the '68 generation, the Swiss painter Gr\u00e9goire M\u00fcller, who is nostalgic for an era that <strong>yet<\/strong><\/strong> <strong>gave rise to the society of today that he abhors.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire la recension (en libre acc\u00e8s)-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For various reasons that I\u2019ll try to explain in this evening column, the book with a thousand flaws that I\u2019ve chosen to discuss is a must-read. The first of these reasons is simple: <em>Under the cobblestones... Lizards<\/em> consists of two parts, each of which has an excellent theme: on the one hand, the narrator\u2019s memories of his move to Paris as a young man from French-speaking Switzerland full of hopes and dreams; and on the other hand, that same narrator\u2019s current reflections on art and the times we live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paris, Art, and Love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better yet, this perspective provides the basis for a respectable story, filled with tenderness, playfulness, surprise, and at times even stylistic flair\u2014without ever going overboard. The fact remains that any young person\u2019s very first adventure in Paris\u2014whether they\u2019re a country bumpkin or a Rastignac\u2014is touching in and of itself. Gr\u00e9goire M\u00fcller, currently a resident of La Chaux-de-Fonds, had certain expectations of the French capital\u2014the capital of art, the capital of everything\u2014expectations that our generation, in turn, continues to harbor. And the disillusionments that go along with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u00abOff to Paris! It\u2019s 1965, I\u2019m 18 years old, and for me, it means going to the source of everything that fascinates me, to the heart of the art world. I\u2019m leaving Switzerland\u2014its conventions, its safe haven\u2014to set out on an adventure, to meet all those painters, sculptors, poets, and other great minds, living or dead, who have enriched my life as a teenager. And isn\u2019t it also the capital of love?\u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does Gr\u00e9goire M\u00fcller offer us any love in his new novel? Perhaps, but one thing is certain: the reader is served a heavy dose of vulgarity. More than love, it\u2019s rather crude sex\u2014described in rather graphic terms\u2014that runs through many of the pages. I\u2019ll therefore refrain from quoting the passages. And when it isn\u2019t vulgar or heavy-handed, it must be said that it\u2019s rather predictable and not necessarily useful: <em>\u00abChantal is almost ten years older than me, and even though she doesn\u2019t mean to be condescending, she makes me feel it. Even in bed, she\u2019s the one who likes to be on top\u2026 and that\u2019s not always my favorite thing.\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in all honesty, the first part already contains some beautiful and interesting passages. For example, on conceptual abstract art, which is revealed through the author\u2019s clear-eyed perspective on the shortcomings of this new artistic movement. These reflections are taken up again by Gr\u00e9goire M\u00fcller in the second part, where the tone is even more subjective and where narrative gives way to thought. Furthermore, his description of various anarchist, alternative, and leftist circles\u2014all the way up to the most exclusive galleries\u2014offers a glimpse into a specific era that is crucial for understanding our own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A touching, left-wing melancholy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that is precisely where the author of <em>Under the cobblestones... Lizards<\/em> is both the most ridiculous and the most interesting. touting a way of life he has entirely devoted to rejecting consumerism and defending a utopian ideal marked by uncompromising equality, fraternity, collaboration, and rebellion, M\u00fcller does not seem to admit his most endearing and most fatal sin: that of having subscribed to a school of thought that gave rise to the very world he criticizes\u2014and which is the one we live in today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Read also | <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/en\/2019\/01\/22\/breaking-up-with-yann-moix-is-ridiculous\/\"><strong>\u00abRompre\u00bb: Yann Moix is ridiculous<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If works of art no longer have any criteria for quality today, it is precisely the logical consequence of an era in which we began to deconstruct everything. This applies to the field of painting just as much as to any other field: whether we consider it reactionary or progressive\u2014or both, <em>please<\/em> \u2013 Everyone would agree that moral integrity is under threat everywhere and that the \u201cclean slate\u201d approach to the past\u2014even if it\u2019s no longer in vogue to proclaim it\u2014has indeed run rampant. Gr\u00e9goire M\u00fcller does admit as much, if only for a single paragraph.
