Over the past few years, Instagram has seen countless photographs of Iceland's natural wonders: its waterfalls, glaciers, black sand beaches and volcanoes, but also its uninhabited moorland, sometimes verdant, sometimes barren and desolate. Yet this romantic definition of a country where the opposing elements engage in an endless struggle to create an original nature cannot really capture what makes Iceland a true jewel of European culture. European, yes, because despite a certain proximity to the North American continent, this country has never ceased to be, through all its roots, a land of old Europe.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Commen\u00e7ons par des hommages. Ce que nous pouvons lire, nous lecteurs francophones, de tout ce que ce pays a pu produire de mieux, nous le devons en grande partie \u00e0 R\u00e9gis Boyer. Professeur de langues et civilisations scandinaves \u00e0 la Sorbonne durant de longues ann\u00e9es, R\u00e9gis Boyer fut \u00e9galement un prolifique traducteur de la litt\u00e9rature nordique, surtout islandaise. Il s\u2019est notamment attach\u00e9 durant toute sa carri\u00e8re \u00e0 d\u00e9mythifier le Nord et ses brumes, ses barbares vikings et ses <em>drakkars<\/em>. D\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 en 2017 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de huitante-cinq ans, il est parvenu \u00e0 nous rendre ce monde un peu plus familier et \u00e0 nous donner le go\u00fbt des lettres de toute la Scandinavie, en particulier de l\u2019Islande.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais en quoi ce pays d\u2019\u00e0 peine 340\u2019000 habitants actuellement peut attirer une plus grande attention que des pays comme la Su\u00e8de ou le Danemark, sensiblement plus grands? Sur cette \u00eele au milieu de l\u2019Atlantique eut lieu ce qu\u2019il convient d\u2019appeler un miracle litt\u00e9raire et intellectuel. Loin, au bout du monde et \u00e0 plusieurs jours de navigation de la Norv\u00e8ge, une petite communaut\u00e9 de 30\u2019000 \u00e2mes \u00e0 peine a su apporter une pierre splendide et originale \u00e0 la litt\u00e9rature occidentale. Ce miracle prend place entre les XII<sup>th<\/sup> et XIV<sup>th<\/sup> si\u00e8cles et ses joyaux sont les sagas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au XX<sup>th<\/sup> et XXI<sup>th<\/sup> si\u00e8cles encore, l\u2019Islande est rest\u00e9e une terre d\u2019\u00e9criture et d\u2019\u00e9crivains. Nous pouvons citer notamment Halld\u00f3r Kiljan Laxness, prix Nobel de litt\u00e9rature en 1955 pour son livre <em>The Icelandic Bell<\/em> qui a su t\u00e9moigner de la mis\u00e8re sociale \u00e0 travers ses romans historiques et a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance de son pays en 1944 seulement. Ind\u00e9pendance arrach\u00e9e progressivement durant les XIX<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 XX<sup>th<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, sans violence et en grande partie gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 J\u00f3n Sigurdsson qui, \u00e0 coup de stylo depuis son bureau de Copenhague, a pouss\u00e9 son pays \u00e0 rejeter la domination s\u00e9culaire des Danois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le miracle islandais est donc celui de la litt\u00e9rature. Et s\u2019il avait d\u00fb se produire en France, en Allemagne ou au Royaume-Uni, il aurait fait \u00e9merger les auteurs des sagas \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gal des plus grands.
