In this long film, with its multiple characters and levels of narration, the director weaves together the testimony of a man and an era, within a great mythology of the underworld. Here's how. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire la critique-->\n\n\n\n<p>Dans une maison de retraite am\u00e9ricaine, Frank Sheeran, un homme au lourd pass\u00e9, raconte son histoire face \u00e0 la cam\u00e9ra. A l\u2019aide de nombreux gros plans, le spectateur assiste aux explications du vieillard, v\u00eatu de mani\u00e8re fringante et portant des lunettes de soleil, sur sa vie pass\u00e9e, et notamment sur le fait qu\u2019il \u00e9tait un tueur \u00e0 gages pour le compte d\u2019une famille mafieuse, les Bufalino. Le protagoniste, Sheeran, est surnomm\u00e9, \u00abThe Irishman\u00bb (L\u2019Irlandais), par ce milieu de truands au sein duquel tout le monde poss\u00e8de un alias. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avant ses d\u00e9buts dans le milieu de la p\u00e8gre, Frank est un modeste chauffeur poids lourd, affili\u00e9 aux <em>Teamsters<\/em> \u2013 le syndicat des conducteurs routiers am\u00e9ricains, et explique comment, alors qu\u2019il tombe en panne sur une aire d\u2019autoroute de Pensylvannie, il fait la br\u00e8ve rencontre d\u2019un homme, Russel Bufalino. Ce dernier, en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 un grand chef mafieux italien, rencontre Frank \u00e0 plusieurs reprises et finit par l\u2019engager pour \u00abpeindre des maisons\u00bb (ndlr&nbsp;: expression mafieuse cit\u00e9e dans le film servant \u00e0 d\u00e9signer un assassinat). Au fil du temps, Russel et Frank entretiendront une belle relation amicale voire fraternelle. Le premier niveau narratif et temporel est le t\u00e9moignage du vieux Frank dans sa maison de retraite; le deuxi\u00e8me, le voyage de Frank et Russel, accompagn\u00e9s de leurs deux femmes, pour se rendre \u00e0 un mariage; le troisi\u00e8me, le r\u00e9cit autobiographique de Frank Sheeran, de ses d\u00e9buts en tant que chauffeur-livreur jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019il accomplisse le voyage avec Russel. En effet, vers le dernier tiers de l\u2019\u0153uvre, les trois niveaux se rejoignent et finissent par revenir \u00e0 la maison de retraite et au vieux Frank. Si cette coexistence entre diff\u00e9rents niveaux est belle et subtile, elle manque parfois de faire sens pour le spectateur qui peine \u00e0 retenir tous les noms et visages de la myriade de personnages que Scorsese int\u00e8gre \u00e0 sa production.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The Irishman | Bande-annonce finale VOSTFR | Netflix France\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tZXhutApkjU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vers un panth\u00e9on mafieux <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Comme\ndit pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment, la grande richesse et faiblesse du long-m\u00e9trage r\u00e9side dans\nson nombre \u00e9lev\u00e9 de personnages. Face \u00e0 tant de noms, d\u2019annotations et mentions\nindirectes, le spectateur perd parfois pied, surtout lorsque lesdits\npersonnages ne sont pas encore entr\u00e9s en sc\u00e8ne, vu les diff\u00e9rentes temporalit\u00e9s\nemploy\u00e9es par la narration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais on le sait, Martin Scorsese aime les ic\u00f4nes et les images fortes. Avec <em>The Irishman<\/em>, il nous d\u00e9peint, sans concessions, le milieu du crime du quartier de <em>Little Italy <\/em>et son \u00e9volution, tant au niveau mat\u00e9riel que des m\u0153urs, au cours du vingti\u00e8me si\u00e8cle. Et cela, non sans quelques hommages aux films de gangsters. A la vue de Russel Bufalino, je n\u2019ai pu m\u2019emp\u00eacher de penser au vieux parrain Vito Corleone du fameux <em>Sponsor<\/em> de Francis Ford Coppola. C\u2019est que la figure du malfrat, du mafieux, hante notre imaginaire avec son image de <em>pistolero<\/em> aux valeurs familiales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chacun des personnages poss\u00e8de d\u2019ailleurs une gestuelle m\u00e9morable et un style vestimentaire qui marquent le spectateur. Mais, face \u00e0 tant de dieux du crime, deux questions n\u2019ont cess\u00e9 d\u2019assaillir mon esprit: \u00e0 qui et pour quelles raisons Frank Sheeran\u00a0s\u2019exprime? Frank, v\u00e9ritable Hercule guerrier, mercenaire impitoyable, parle en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral peu, et surtout nous ne savons rien de son pass\u00e9, ni exactement sur ce qu\u2019il a fait \u00e0 la guerre, ni sur son enfance. Mais il semblerait que, vers la fin de sa vie, le vieil homme d\u00e9cide de se confier sur ses p\u00e9ch\u00e9s. A qui? Est-ce qu\u2019il se confierait, par exemple, au pr\u00eatre? A ses filles? A une entit\u00e9 tierce qui serait le spectateur? La question reste en suspens et rel\u00e8ve \u2013 h\u00e9las \u2013 du go\u00fbt de chacun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Irishman<\/em> est un film appr\u00e9ciable\npour les cin\u00e9philes de tous bords. Parfois d\u00e9routant, nous ne pouvons nous\nemp\u00eacher de prendre part \u00e0 tous ces complots et trames du monde des truands.\nTapis dans l\u2019ombre, comme Frank lors de ses missions, les spectateurs assistent\n\u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9volution et au requiem final du panth\u00e9on des dieux du crime souterrain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Write to the author:&nbsp;<\/em><a
