Tuesday's books - Ivan Garcia<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Handke, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature\nliterature in 2019, provoked strong political and media reactions\nthe Swedish prize for his stance on the Yugoslav conflict.\nYugoslav conflict. It is against this backdrop that Le Regard Libre<\/em> offers you a first foray into\nlands with A child's story<\/em>.\nIn this book, the Austrian writer delivers an intimate and touching account\nabout childhood and fatherhood. This is not his\nbest novel, but it is a beautiful, saddening fable, read for its supple\nnot for its content. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

For some, Peter Handke is not a political writer;\nfor others, one must separate the work from the author; for still\nothers, the recent controversy\u2014which seems to be taking on\ndisproportionate proportions\u2014should be put into perspective. It\u2019s not an easy matter. On December 10,\nthe Austrian writer received the 2019 Nobel Prize in Literature from\nthe prestigious Swedish Academy. And yet, the laureate has been strongly\ncriticized and contested because of some of his pro-Serbian stances regarding\nthe conflict in the former Yugoslavia. In this regard, the next print edition of\nour magazine will feature an in-depth article on the recent\ncontroversy surrounding Peter Handke.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To begin our exploration of\nthe work of Handke, one of the leading contemporary German-language writers, I\nhave chosen A child's story<\/em>,\ntranslated and published in May 2019 by Editions Gallimard. The story explores the\nrelationship between a father and his daughter, known as \u00abthe child,\u00bb particularly their\nnumerous moves between Germany and France, their interactions, their\nlearning of a new language, their struggles with integration, and their\ndaily routines. As the story unfolds, the two protagonists\ntry to build a daily life for themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exercise\nin Handke-style writing <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As you\u2019ve probably guessed, the book\ndoesn\u2019t feature any outlandish plot or one worthy of the most thrilling thriller<\/em>. The book's appeal lies in\nits form. A child's story<\/em> contains\nno dialogue; the author entrusts the narration to an omniscient\nnarrator who, interspersed with occasional commentary, describes the lives of the two\nprotagonists, their successes and their failures. At most, the narrator\nallows himself to use a few brief snippets of direct reported speech\nto incorporate the characters\u2019 words into his lengthy commentary.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abAt first, students from the class would still often come to see him at his home; the next day at school, however, they would literally avoid him. The child\u2014who wasn\u2019t even eight years old yet\u2014knew exactly why and put it this way: \u201cThey don\u2019t like me because I\u2019m German.\u201d\u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In just under a hundred pages, the author\nhas embarked on a curious stylistic exercise: philosophizing about the vagaries of\neveryday life. The fable is thus told through a narrative voice that digresses\ninto reflections on homes, ponders childhood and fatherhood, offers ironic commentary\non the behavior of certain characters, or comments on the actions of the\nprotagonist. The use of third-person narration creates a\ndistance between the narrator and the protagonist; it is as if the latter were\nthe subject of a strange experiment. Moreover, regarding the protagonist, the\nreader will never learn his name or occupation, and upon close reading of the work, he is\na character of remarkable psychological emptiness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abIt was as natural to think of this child as it was to look forward to two other important things: the woman whom he was convinced was meant for him and who, from the very beginning, had been secretly drawing closer to him in concentric circles, and the professional life in which only he could find the freedom befitting a man\u2014without these three expectations ever, even once, merging into a single image.\u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

O\nsadness <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A\nChildren's Story <\/em>also\naddresses other themes that are sure to evoke\nmore emotional reactions in the reader. The difficulties of living in a foreign country\nor adjusting to a culture that is not one\u2019s own are very much present in\nthe novel, particularly through the character of the child. Shuttled from school to\nschool, the little girl struggles to make friends, and, being close to her father\u2014\nsometimes too close\u2014she suffers regularly; she even ends up falling in with the\nwrong crowd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Far from being a bestseller<\/em> Whether a novel with a central thesis or not, the work by the winner, Peter Handke, inspires a quiet sense of admiration\u2014the very same feeling we might experience while watching the clouds drift by. As we read it, we sometimes pause to reflect on the narrator\u2019s words and the characters. Very often, we feel a deep sadness for this poor child who is trying to do the right thing, as if a childlike perspective still lingered within us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
