There's no doubt about it: this is the film adaptation of the famous musical <em>Cats<\/em>. Not really <em>fan<\/em> of the genre in question, but aware of the success of this London production that conquered Broadway and then the world, I was intrigued by what this mise en images had to offer. Let's call a spade a spade: while I didn't come away with my hair standing on end, I can't say I was carried away.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire la critique-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Cats - Bande-annonce officielle VOST [Au cin\u00e9ma le 25 d\u00e9cembre]\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wRMXNWyyZ9A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>La loi du moindre effort<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Certes, le d\u00e9fi est de taille. Comment adapter au cin\u00e9ma une histoire dont la trame narrative, bas\u00e9e sur une s\u00e9rie de po\u00e8mes pour enfants de T.S Eliot, est constitu\u00e9e d\u2019une suite de tableaux chant\u00e9s et dans\u00e9s plus que d\u2019une v\u00e9ritable intrigue? Comment donner vie \u00e0 des matous humanis\u00e9s de fa\u00e7on plus ou moins r\u00e9aliste en \u00e9vitant d\u2019affubler ses acteurs des costumes <em>kitsch<\/em>, <em>so eighties<\/em>, qui continuent pourtant \u00e0 faire le succ\u00e8s de <em>Cats<\/em> sur les planches? Je ne le cache pas, je n\u2019ai pas de r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 ces questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>J\u2019esp\u00e9rais toutefois que Tom Hopper qui nous a \u00e9pat\u00e9s avec <em>Visit<\/em> <em>Discours d\u2019un Roi,<\/em> oscaris\u00e9 \u00e0 plusieurs reprises, <em>The Danish Girl<\/em> and <em>Les Mis\u00e9rables<\/em>, lui, saurait y r\u00e9pondre. Je regrette malheureusement que compter seulement sur l\u2019aide des effets sp\u00e9ciaux et d\u2019un <em>casting<\/em> qui aurait fait envie \u00e0 plus d\u2019un r\u00e9alisateur soit la solution pour laquelle il a finalement opt\u00e9. Se reposer sur les t\u00eates d\u2019affiche que sont Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson ou encore Ian McKellen pour porter un film dont le sc\u00e9nario, \u00e0 peine retravaill\u00e9 pour garder l\u2019esprit <em>music-hall<\/em>, laisse \u00e0 d\u00e9sirer et n\u2019est ici pas suffisant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On suit donc Victoria, abandonn\u00e9e par ses ma\u00eetres dans un quartier de Londres o\u00f9 vivent les Jellicle Cats. Une fois par ann\u00e9e, leur chef, le sage Deut\u00e9ronome (Judi Dench) les r\u00e9unit pour choisir qui parmi eux est digne de rejoindre la f\u00e9linosph\u00e8re et de recommencer une nouvelle vie. Parmi de truculents minous tels que le charmant Rum Tum Tugger (Jason DeRulo), le gourmand Bustopher Jones (James Corden), la s\u00e9ductrice Bombalurina (Taylor Swift) ou la d\u00e9chue Grizabella (Jennifer Hudson dont l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation de <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=soLYreeI6aQ\">Memory<\/a><\/em> est remarquable et touchante), se trouve \u00e9videmment le grand m\u00e9chant de l\u2019histoire, Macavity (Idris Elba).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"420\" height=\"595\" src=\"http:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Cats-Artwork-chf-02-Teaser-F-LowRes.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Cats-Artwork-chf-02-Teaser-F-LowRes.png 420w, https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Cats-Artwork-chf-02-Teaser-F-LowRes-106x150.png 106w, https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Cats-Artwork-chf-02-Teaser-F-LowRes-212x300.png 212w, https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Cats-Artwork-chf-02-Teaser-F-LowRes-300x425.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Des choix peu judicieux<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bien que le jeu soit de qualit\u00e9, le chant aussi d\u2019ailleurs, que le film soit teint\u00e9 d\u2019humour et que la capture de mouvement permette de ne pas figer les expressions faciales ou corporelles des ces \u00eatres hybrides, le rendu manque \u00e9trangement de naturel. Notamment en ce qui concerne le personnage principal sur qui, pour moi, les effets visuels sont totalement rat\u00e9s. Manque de chance, c\u2019est elle que l\u2019on voit le plus \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si la gr\u00e2ce et la virtuosit\u00e9 de cette derni\u00e8re, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9e par la danseuse \u00e9toile du Royal Ballet Francesca Hayward qui fait ici ses d\u00e9buts au cin\u00e9ma, sont pr\u00e9serv\u00e9es, on peut d\u00e9plorer le fait d\u2019avoir engag\u00e9 des danseurs professionnels dont les qualit\u00e9s sont peu mises en avant, tant les gros plans prennent le dessus sur les plans d\u2019ensemble et les chor\u00e9graphies. Perdus parmi les <em>stars<\/em> qui leur volent la vedette, hors-cadre trop souvent et diminu\u00e9s par des d\u00e9cors d\u00e9mesur\u00e9s et peu cr\u00e9dibles, ils ne semblent servir qu\u2019\u00e0 \u00e9toffer le groupe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En r\u00e9digeant cet article, j\u2019apprends qu\u2019avant d\u2019en \u00eatre finalement retir\u00e9, <em>Cats<\/em> faisait partie de la liste des films propos\u00e9s aux Oscars par Universal. Une d\u00e9cision qui, en r\u00e9alit\u00e9, ne m\u2019\u00e9tonne gu\u00e8re, puisque, de mon point de vue, Tom Hopper s\u2019est trop repos\u00e9 sur la notori\u00e9t\u00e9 dont jouissait la com\u00e9die musicale. Except\u00e9 pour l\u2019ajout de la chanson <em>Beautiful Ghosts<\/em>, les choix op\u00e9r\u00e9s desservent sa r\u00e9adaptation dont les points positifs ne sont finalement que ceux d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sents dans la version originale. Si \u00abla nuit, tous les chats sont gris\u00bb, dans les salles obscures par contre <em>Cats<\/em> n\u2019aura pas eu la capacit\u00e9 de nous duper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Write to the author:&nbsp;<a
