\u00abPeople are beautiful,\u00bb a friend of mine sometimes likes to say. That was my first impression of Michael Curtiz's film. Men and women of character, suits, coats, long dresses and beautiful blouses, traditional clothes and old cars bring back the charm of a world that no longer exists. And perhaps never did...<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Typically perfect<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Unsurprisingly, we're in Casablanca, Morocco, during the Second World War. The city, under Vichy control, is an obligatory passage for European refugees trying to reach the United States, and as a result, it is the scene of a great intermingling of populations. Soldiers, Nazi officers, French forces of order, local populations, colonial populations, emigrants, Resistance fighters, refugees, etc. are all to be found there. Almost the entire story takes place in the Rick's Caf\u00e9 Am\u00e9ricain<\/em> - a bar popular with paper smugglers, where Rick Blaine, the main character, is the owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, Ugarte, a low-level delinquent, arrives at the Rick's Caf\u00e9<\/em> in possession of stolen safe-conducts which he is to sell to Victor Laszlo - a member of the resistance - and his wife, Ilsa Lund. The police, having been alerted, manage to arrest him, but do not find the documents that Ugarte, sensing his arrest, had given to Rick. What's more, we learn that Rick and Ilsa know each other. They met and fell in love in Paris some time ago. A love triangle against a backdrop of moral dilemma: all the elements of a romantic drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Umberto Eco rightly said about Casablanca<\/em>: \u00abWhen all the archetypes come flooding in without any restraint, we reach Homeric depths. Two clich\u00e9s make us laugh. A hundred clich\u00e9s move us.\u00bb The Italian writer has pinpointed one of the major strengths of Curtiz\u2019s film: its masterful play on clich\u00e9s. The screenplay proceeds by typification: each character embodies their role to the fullest, with all the traits that go with it. Not to mention that behind these masterful characters lie great actors. Alongside the charismatic Humphrey Bogart as Rick and Paul Henreid as Laszlo, the captivating Ingrid Bergman will leave no one indifferent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Love versus virtue<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While the film is obviously \u00abromantic,\u00bb it is not so much the emotions themselves that lie at the heart of the plot as Rick\u2019s moral dilemma. Will he choose to follow his heart, thereby jeopardizing the resistance\u2019s cause, or will he give up his love for Ilsa, allowing Laszlo to escape with his wife? It\u2019s a delicate question. While in the film it comes down to Rick\u2019s choice, it was first and foremost a question the screenwriters had to address.. <\/em>The latter dithered long and hard between the two possibilities. Aljean Harmetz explains in his book The making of Casablanca<\/em>,that the question was finally decided by the Hays code <\/em>- American film production code - which forbade adultery to be shown on screen. So Rick sacrifices himself and Laszlo leaves with Ilsa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casablanca<\/em>, far from being \u00aba long history of female humiliation\u00bb \u2014as Abnousse Shalmani writes\u2014will resonate with the most nostalgic among us, with those who know how to be moved by what is \u00abbeautiful,\u00bb by what is alive, rather than imposing a sad, moralizing judgment tinged with political correctness. Finally, Casablanca <\/em>will join those who still dare to love beautiful women, men in suits and ties, the trench coats<\/em>, For those who know how to revel in magnificent black-and-white images. From another time... but eternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
