Musumeci<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The new Netflix series, <em>Freud<\/em>, is as successful as it is reprehensible. The success comes from the numbers: since its release last March, the series has remained in the Top 10 for highest viewer ratings. The blame comes from the critical reception: a production on the borderline of a puppet show, which on the one hand teaches nothing about psychoanalysis, and on the other depicts a Sigmund a thousand miles away from the figure much - perhaps too much - idolized in intellectual circles. Success and blame go hand in hand, all in coherence. Both can be legitimately explained. Take a look.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire la critique-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight episodes in a first season that surprises both positively and negatively. Negative because biographical. Positive because fictional. Thank you, Doctor... we'll explain: what was badly perceived, and not frankly appreciated, was the freedom taken in portraying Freud. Nevertheless, <em>biopic<\/em> The director felt compelled to betray, without totally betraying. When you watch a series called \u00abFreud\u00bb, what do you want? You want dream analysis, the Oedipus complex, a cigar to suck on - making the connection you're thinking of - sexual allusions at every turn and everything in between. <em>bells and whistles<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probl\u00e8me: la r\u00e9alisation qui pense davantage \u00e0 son travail de fiction qu\u2019\u00e0 son travail de m\u00e9moire, et ce n\u2019est pas forc\u00e9ment un mal, laisse avancer la trame \u00e0 son bon plaisir jusqu\u2019au moment o\u00f9 elle se souvient que la s\u00e9rie en question s\u2019appelle quand m\u00eame \u00abFreud\u00bb. Alors, l&rsquo;histoire passant du coq \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ne, tel personnage se voit contraint de devoir avouer en pleine crise d\u2019hyst\u00e9rie que \u00abje crois que je veux tuer mon p\u00e8re et coucher avec m\u00e8re!\u00bb Larmes dans l\u2019assembl\u00e9e qui assiste \u00e0 l\u2019aveu, rires face \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran. Non, d\u00e9sol\u00e9, mais c\u2019est ridicule. Et chacun des huit \u00e9pisodes compte ses sorties du genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"http:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1535611.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1535611.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1535611-1170x658.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1535611-585x329.jpg 585w, https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1535611-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1535611-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1535611-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1535611-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/1535611-600x338.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Positive because it's fictional, yes. Because it's well-constructed, despite the grotesque biographical background. Because with the excuse of a biopic, we're actually dealing with a thriller, both detective and psychological. Suspense, investigation, secrets, things left unsaid, impulses, violence, madness. Stories of family, confrontation and politics. Vienna at the end of the 19th century<sup>th<\/sup>, co-capital, with Budapest, of an Austro-Hungarian Empire that was more akin to the\u2019<em>austro<\/em> than Hungarian, at least as far as power is concerned. Franz Joseph I<sup>er<\/sup>, When the two monarchies joined forces in 1867, the Austrian emperor took care to shower the Hungarian nobility with privileges, but here again, the union is more akin to annexation. This Austro-Hungarian tension, very much present in the series, provides a politico-passionate background that manages to capture attention, interest and intrigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most fictitious element, the one that succeeds best in the mise-en-sc\u00e8ne and that made the Freudians howl, is the esotericism. There are sequences that are a little far-fetched. And a little boring, too. But the majority of the esoteric scenes - and they occupy a major place in the eight episodes - deserve the viewer's riveted eyes on the screen. They are forged in the establishment of a suspense that is, if not excellent, at least very strong. The staging, which sees blood-soaked bodies screaming, satanic rapes \u00e0 la<a href=\"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/en\/cinema\/rosemarys-baby-le-diable-ou-la-folie\/\"> <em>Rosemary's Baby<\/em><\/a>, Demons possess souls, dark, suggestive dream frames. Gloomy songs, mental manipulations, shots that alternate between the slowness that sees anguish rising and the speed that creates shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result, or the result of an in-depth look at this new work from Netflix: disappointment, but also guilty pleasure. The series really isn't very good, but that doesn't stop it from having some very good points, including the thriller aspect and the play with esotericism. Disappointment: we don't really find out much more about Freud afterwards. <em>Freud<\/em>, or psychoanalysis. Which is not to say that we can't <em>won't know any better<\/em> the master and his discipline. After a little excitement, thrills and reflection, we may stop here and move on to the next trendy series of the moment, just as we may delve deeper into this essential figure in the intellectual landscape of the 20th century.<sup>th<\/sup> century, whose influence continues to this day.
