In 1992, during the war in former Yugoslavia, he was found strangled in a field in Croatia. Chris' family never understood his desire to go so close to danger as a journalist. Ever since the news of his death broke, the director - and Chris's cousin - has been haunted by the mysteries surrounding his death. So she decided to investigate and reconstruct his story. Il m\u00eale avec justesse quatre dispositifs formels \u2013 que sont l\u2019animation, le reportage, les images d\u2019archives et les t\u00e9moignages. De cette mani\u00e8re, <em>Chris the Swiss<\/em> propose un point de vue multidimensionnel de la situation, ce qui permet d\u2019une certaine mani\u00e8re de contrebalancer l\u2019id\u00e9alisation du personnage principal. En effet, l\u2019un des reproches qui pourrait \u00eatre \u00e9mis serait \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de son impartialit\u00e9. Outre le d\u00e9bat qui gravite autour de l\u2019objectivit\u00e9 d\u2019un documentaire \u2013 qui ne se r\u00e9v\u00e8lera jamais vraiment sans parti pris puisque d\u2019une part, le point de vue port\u00e9 par le r\u00e9alisateur va transpara\u00eetre dans son \u0153uvre et, d\u2019autre part, le cin\u00e9ma va prendre position et inciter son public \u00e0 l&#8217;imiter \u2013 la proximit\u00e9 \u00e9motionnelle entre Anja Kofmel et son sujet l\u2019a peut-\u00eatre emp\u00each\u00e9e de d\u00e9voiler l\u2019enti\u00e8ret\u00e9 de la personnalit\u00e9 de son cousin. Les actes r\u00e9pr\u00e9hensibles de Chris sont syst\u00e9matiquement excus\u00e9s, au contraire de ceux d\u2019autrui qui sont explicitement mis en avant. Le film donne l\u2019impression que Chris n\u2019a que tr\u00e8s l\u00e9g\u00e8rement pris part au conflit. Ce m\u00e9canisme le rend paradoxalement passif de ses propres d\u00e9cisions et actions. Bien que la r\u00e9alisatrice ait tent\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre neutre, en offrant une multitude de voix au r\u00e9cit, le spectateur sent encore le h\u00e9ros que la jeune femme imaginait en son cousin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Un regard aux multiples facettes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019animation repr\u00e9sente la vision subjective de la jeune Anja Kofmel. Ces sc\u00e8nes montrent comment elle con\u00e7oit le pass\u00e9 de son cousin, mais \u00e9voquent \u00e9galement les craintes qu&#8217;elle a surmont\u00e9es et les cauchemars qui l&#8217;ont hant\u00e9e apr\u00e8s son d\u00e9c\u00e8s. Ces s\u00e9quences en animation s&#8217;apparentent \u00e0 la perception simpliste d\u2019un enfant, par exemple, les dessins sombres multiplient les nuances de gris, rappelant la dichotomie absolue que les enfants imaginent entre le bien et le mal. La dimension caricaturale des personnages \u2013 et de la nature alentour \u2013 va aussi dans le sens de la repr\u00e9sentation imag\u00e9e et phantasm\u00e9e du monde au travers des yeux d\u2019une enfant. La jeune Anja, alors \u00e2g\u00e9e de dix ans, id\u00e9alise Chris et le per\u00e7oit comme un aventurier h\u00e9ro\u00efque. En parall\u00e8le, Anja Kofmel r\u00e9alise un reportage dans lequel elle expose le processus d\u2019enqu\u00eate qu\u2019elle m\u00e8ne. Dans ce dernier, elle embo\u00eete le pas \u00e0 son cousin et repasse par les lieux clefs de son voyage. Ces s\u00e9quences-ci, qui donnent la parole aux parents, aux autres journalistes et aux soldats, pr\u00e9sentent une multitude de points de vue sur une personne \u2013 qu\u2019est Chris \u2013 et sur une situation \u2013 qu\u2019est la guerre. Ces sc\u00e8nes dressent une image \u00e0 la fois compl\u00e8te et contradictoire du jeune homme; il est tant\u00f4t accus\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre un espion, un tra\u00eetre ou encore un simple journaliste. La r\u00e9alisatrice use \u00e9galement d\u2019images d\u2019archives qui jouent un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9 dans le film, car elles ouvrent la porte \u00e0 la grande histoire. Le long-m\u00e9trage ne relate pas uniquement l\u2019aventure de Chris, mais aussi l\u2019univers complexe qui l\u2019entoure. Ces s\u00e9quences permettent de replacer l\u2019histoire de Chris dans son contexte, sans transformer <em>Chris the Swiss<\/em> en un documentaire de guerre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les transitions entre les multiples dispositifs formels s\u2019av\u00e8rent douces pour le spectateur qui ne se sent pas transbahut\u00e9 d\u2019une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019autre. Au contraire, le long-m\u00e9trage lui propose une vision complexe de la situation, tiss\u00e9e d\u2019une multitude de t\u00e9moignages. Le maillage de la narration reste limpide et tout \u00e0 fait compr\u00e9hensible. Ce n\u2019est pas uniquement au niveau narratif que ces transitions semblent fines, mais aussi d\u2019un point de vue esth\u00e9tique, principalement au moment de basculer d\u2019une image film\u00e9e \u00e0 une image d\u2019animation et inversement. Les traits de l\u2019une se fondent dans la seconde, transformant, par exemple, les rails d\u2019un chemin de fer en lignes t\u00e9l\u00e9phoniques. Par les images d\u2019archives, le spectateur suit la grande histoire et plonge dans la petite avec les t\u00e9moignages, les images anim\u00e9es et le reportage.
