Le Regard Libre N\u00b0 73<\/a>\u00a0-\u00a0Jonas Follonier<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was Chairman and CEO of Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de la Feuille d'avis de Lausanne et des Imprimeries R\u00e9unies SA, and then of Edipresse, the company founded by Paul Allenspach, the publisher of The Notice Leaf<\/em> of Lausanne, now 24 heures<\/em>. Thriller author Sharon's skin <\/em>(2000) under the pseudonym Ken Wood, he previously wrote under another pseudonym, Marc Lacaze. Under this identity, he published short stories, columns in Le Nouveau Quotidien<\/em> - now Le Temps<\/em> after its merger with Le Journal de Gen\u00e8ve<\/em> - by Jacques Pilet and an anthology, Indian dessert<\/em> (1996). But it's under his real name that Marc Lamuni\u00e8re, a leading figure in the French-language press of the 20th century, has been able to make his mark.th<\/sup> century, has just published a book celebrating the hundred candles it blew out in early 2021. Conceived as a series of interviews with journalist Jacques Poget, The Garden of Stings. A centenarian's view of his life, the century that has passed and the days that remain<\/em> offers us a veritable philosophy of life, inspired by his own reading. Interview.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\u00abWe never stop to think that, at any moment, we could fall into nothingness.\u00bb This sentence is not taken from the book that Marc Lamuni\u00e8re has just published with Editions de l\u2019Aire, The Garden of Stings<\/em>, but from our interview at her apartment. It\u2019s the middle of March. Her assistant, Carla Rua, opens the door for my colleague, photographer Indra Crittin, and me. In fact, it was Carla Rua who handled the book\u2019s digital aspects, as acknowledged in the acknowledgments. She points out to me that the objects featured on the book\u2019s cover are to my right as I enter, placed on a small sideboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marc Lamuni\u00e8re, for his part, is on the left, sitting in a yellow-orange armchair in the living room. He has a mischievous, commanding, and lucid gaze\u2014or perhaps all three at once; I\u2019m not sure yet. I\u2019m immediately struck by his imposing figure and commanding presence. A hundred years old, yet his mind is still sharp, a brilliance that shines through his body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aesthetics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

He speaks of his own body in his book of conversations with Jacques Poget: \u00abAt ninety-two, I was truly the embodiment of the person I had always wanted to become. At that time, I sincerely believe people thought I was twenty to thirty years younger.\u00bb Recalling the rest of the quote when I read it to him, he adds: \u00abThis desire to stay in good shape undoubtedly stems from a certain form of narcissism. Jean-Pierre Moulin (the journalist from Vaud) once called me an \u2018intelligent narcissist.\u2018 I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ve remained intelligent, but I\u2019m less narcissistic.\u2019 If proof of his intelligence were needed, here it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Marc Lamuni\u00e8re first explored aesthetics through newspaper layout. \u00abAs a media executive, I set specific requirements for visuals. I\u2019m very particular about beautiful typography.\u00bb In fact, he is the one responsible for the \u00abV\u00bb in the logo of the New Daily<\/em> or the special image from the Morning<\/em> (old design) \u2013 \u00abIt broke my heart when they changed it.\u00bb Marc Lamuni\u00e8re acknowledges that he \u00abwas born with some talent.\u00bb But he also owes this passion to his father\u2019s side of the family, where people have been miniaturists for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conversation turns back to his appearance. \u00abI was inspired by characters from American movies. I really liked the idea of trying to look like them. I\u2019ve almost succeeded\u2014I don\u2019t know why.\u00bb That\u2019s a nice way of putting it for someone who was eliminated in the second round of the competition to find Switzerland\u2019s best athlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondary School<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sarcasm. Marc Lamuni\u00e8re is so fond of it that he devoted an entire chapter to it in his interviews with Jacques Poget. To understand Marc Lamuni\u00e8re\u2019s relationship with sarcastic humor, we have to go back to his childhood. \u00abI came from a family that was a little too serious. My father was from Geneva and had a Protestant upbringing. He made life seem more burdened with responsibilities than anything else. As for my mother, she was too anxious.\u00bb That\u2019s when the free-spirited world of jazz came into his life. \u00abIt was through jazz that I began to free myself from a certain difficulty in being.\u00bb A counterpoint, in short\u2014a dissonance that finds its counterpart in humor with a second degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abIt\u2019s a way of testing people. It\u2019s a subtle hint that lets you figure out who \u2018it\u2019s going to be difficult with.\u2018\u2019 This practice greatly puzzled those around him, who weren\u2019t prepared for it. Yet, \u2019if you don\u2019t have the swing, you\u2019ve got nothing,\u00bb as pianist Duke Ellington put it\u2014a phrase Marc Lamuni\u00e8re likes to repeat. Of course, he does so with what\u2019s barely more than a hint of a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The conversation then turns to journalism\u2014since he has, in a sense, devoted his life to it\u2014and we talk with a view to a profile to be published in Le Regard Libre<\/em> and on top of that, The Garden of Stings<\/em> It, too, took the form of a question-and-answer session with a professional in the field. \u00abI enjoyed spending time with journalists more than I did with the Rotary Club, from which I was kicked out very quickly,\u00bb says the former publisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Marc Lamuni\u00e8re, a journalist is, in essence, the same as a citizen\u2014namely, someone whose role is to challenge preconceived notions and whose tool is curiosity. Needless to say, people fulfill this mission to varying degrees. But Marc Lamuni\u00e8re still believes in it. He is what can rightly be called\u2014despite the term\u2019s all-too-frequent and often questionable use\u2014a humanist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Philosophy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s no surprise, then, that when asked about his favorite thinker, the former media executive immediately names Montaigne. \u00abWhat stands out about this author is his freedom and his modernism. Montaigne had an utterly innovative and timeless vision of religion, the education of children, happiness\u2026\u00bb Among Marc Lamuni\u00e8re\u2019s philosophical influences, Buddhism also ranks near the top. More than just a way of thinking, it\u2019s a practice\u2014a sort of compass he discovered \u00abtoo late.\u00bb Its main lesson: the present moment is the only thing we truly experience and the only eternity. \u00abThis idea gives me comfort. It is the very foundation of meditation, which is the same everywhere: it\u2019s about seeing things as they are and staying in the present, without distorting it.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is how Marc Lamuni\u00e8re finds a certain sense of serenity. \u00abWhat appeals to me about Buddhism is that it isn\u2019t a religion. Buddha said, \u2018Forget me, but spread my teachings.\u2018 Obviously, the opposite happened. Religion sprang up like a mushroom\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say poisonous, but at least strange\u2014consisting solely of rituals.\u2019 Lamuni\u00e8re goes on to point out that Buddhism had a profound influence on ancient Greek thought, thanks to the contacts between the two civilizations. \u2019Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Epicurus were deeply influenced by it.\u00bb That\u2019s no small thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Finally, when asked which events in his life have left a lasting impression on him, Marc Lamuni\u00e8re first mentions his wife\u2019s illness, which he personally cared for over the course of several years. In fact, every chapter of his book features a photograph showing one of the decorative arrangements that accompanied \u00abPomme\u2019s\u00bb (her nickname), which the devoted husband wanted to brighten by taking those few minutes to prepare each morning before leaving for a long day at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other moments that left a lasting impression on him were those when he came close to death. \u00abI\u2019ve nearly died fourteen times,\u00bb he says, looking amused, \u00abbut I don\u2019t remember all the details, because that\u2019s a lot.\u00bb One anecdote worth noting\u2014told in the book\u2014is that of Marc Lamuni\u00e8re, who finds himself trapped on a plane that refuses to fly in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His face always wore that deadpan expression. \u00abI have a natural mask that leaves room for all kinds of interpretations. This natural impassivity has actually served me well: I was able to hide my incompetence, and then hide other things, which meant my competitors didn\u2019t catch on until it was too late.\u00bb That\u2019s it\u2014Marc Lamuni\u00e8re flashes a smile, and not just any smile. He then invites us into the next room, where he sits down at the drum set. \u00abI play every day. When I put down my drumsticks, it\u2019ll be time for me to go.\u00bb After a five-minute session that leaves us speechless, it\u2019s time to wrap things up. \u00abSee you soon,\u00bb he smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
