Cette \u0153uvre musicale narrative raconte d\u00e9j\u00e0 l\u2019histoire qui servira de toile de fond \u00e0 celle du film. Le r\u00e9alisateur qui a utilis\u00e9 <em>How Are You Getting Home?,<\/em> l\u2019un de leurs morceaux, dans son \u00e9tonnant <em>Holy Motors <\/em>(2012) et a ensuite interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 le titre <em>When You\u2019re a French Director<\/em> sur leur album <em>Hippopotamus<\/em> (2017), leur propose alors de mettre en images cette fable singuli\u00e8re qui trouve en lui une r\u00e9sonance particuli\u00e8re. Leurs univers atypiques entrent ainsi en symbiose m\u00ealant cruaut\u00e9, humour, cynisme, beaut\u00e9, folie et merveilleux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seulement voil\u00e0, Carax a besoin de temps pour s\u2019approprier le projet et cr\u00e9er la forme capable de le porter. C\u2019est que la th\u00e9matique centrale est d\u00e9licate sur le plan personnel et pourrait, selon lui, troubler sa fille Nastya Golubeva Carax alors \u00e2g\u00e9e de 9 ans. De nombreuses similitudes pourraient en effet \u00eatre tiss\u00e9es, et mal interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es, entre sa tragique relation avec l\u2019actrice Katerina Golubeva et l\u2019histoire qui unit les protagonistes du film. Aujourd\u2019hui, visiblement compris et soutenu par son enfant, puisque Nastya appara\u00eet aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de son p\u00e8re dans la premi\u00e8re sc\u00e8ne du film qui se r\u00e9v\u00e8le d\u2019ailleurs lui \u00eatre d\u00e9di\u00e9, Carax semble avoir trouv\u00e9 le moyen de raconter la destin\u00e9e d\u2019Annette et peut-\u00eatre exorcis\u00e9, dans le m\u00eame temps, quelques d\u00e9mons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Une fable cruelle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Annette, c\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019une v\u00e9ritable petite poup\u00e9e issue d\u2019une relation d\u2019amour intense devenue malsaine avec le temps. Ann (Marion Cotillard) est solaire, Henry (Adam Driver) est lunaire. Il est pourtant le feu alors qu\u2019elle est la glace. C\u00e9l\u00e8bre soprano au fa\u00eete de sa gloire, Ann incarne l\u2019art, le vrai, celui des \u00e9lites, le classique, la perfection. Chaque soir, elle accomplit avec brio sa destin\u00e9e, celle de mourir devant un public conquis. Henry, alors non moins adul\u00e9, \u00e9volue dans une sph\u00e8re diff\u00e9rente, celle, plus populaire, terrestre, du <em>stand-up<\/em>. Chaque soir, lui, le gorille, tue son public \u00e0 coup de vannes cyniques et de jeux de mots acerbes. Ils s\u2019aiment pourtant, ange et humain, et finissent par donner naissance \u00e0 Annette, un \u00eatre litt\u00e9ralement \u00e0 part, une marionnette au regard triste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avec le temps, la fougue d\u2019Henry, devenue noirceur, m\u00e8ne le couple \u00e0 la d\u00e9rive. Jaloux du succ\u00e8s de son \u00e9pouse, il souffre en plus de se voir tomber de son pi\u00e9destal face \u00e0 un public qui ne rit plus. Et Ann, quant \u00e0 elle, oie blanche sans tache n\u2019est peut-\u00eatre pas si \u00e9trang\u00e8re au mal-\u00eatre de son \u00e9poux. Apr\u00e8s tout, n\u2019est-ce pas elle qui, la premi\u00e8re, a croqu\u00e9 la pomme? Elle est, dans tous les cas, aussi coupable que lui pour ce qui est de faire d\u2019Annette non plus une poup\u00e9e, mais un vulgaire pantin. C\u2019est l\u00e0 la th\u00e9matique centrale du film et pas de <em>happy end<\/em> pour ce r\u00e9cit macabre, nulle r\u00e9demption, malgr\u00e9 une sc\u00e8ne finale des plus dures et \u00e9mouvantes qui finit par ailleurs par \u00e9clairer le spectateur sur le parti pris de la poup\u00e9e, tout en laissant l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation ouverte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Un objet \u00e9trange<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Il faut le savoir \u2013 ou, comme dans mon cas, peut-\u00eatre pas&nbsp;: <em>Annette<\/em> n\u2019a rien d\u2019un film conventionnel. Apr\u00e8s une sc\u00e8ne d\u2019ouverture totalement originale, m\u00e9ta, chacun endosse son r\u00f4le, son costume, pr\u00eat \u00e0 prendre en charge le r\u00e9cit. Les sc\u00e8nes dialogu\u00e9es se font rares et laissent place \u00e0 des tableaux successifs chant\u00e9s et oniriques, rythm\u00e9s par des ellipses ou structur\u00e9s par des \u00abflash info\u00bb intempestifs, formant chacun une sorte d\u2019unit\u00e9, de petite \u0153uvre d\u2019art \u00e0 elle seule. Un choix esth\u00e9tique fort, sans compromis, qui peut ravir le spectateur \u00e0 chaque changement d\u2019ambiance mais finit souvent par le perdre ou le lasser par manque de coh\u00e9rence. J\u2019ai n\u00e9anmoins appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 le d\u00e9fi relev\u00e9 par les interpr\u00e8tes et ai \u00e9t\u00e9 transport\u00e9e par la magie qui se d\u00e9gage de certaines sc\u00e8nes. Tour \u00e0 tour grotesques et ridicules, presque malaisantes comme au moment de l\u2019accouchement ou de l\u2019orgasme, ou d\u2019une po\u00e9sie \u00e0 couper le souffle, comme lors de la valse en plein oc\u00e9an, toutes les chansons ont \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9es non pas en studio, mais directement sur le plateau, en jeu. La voix caverneuse d\u2019Adam Driver sonne \u00e9trangement juste dans sa dissonance et, bien qu\u2019elle ait \u00e9t\u00e9 parfois second\u00e9e pour le chant lyrique, le timbre particulier de
