Au son de sa voix quasi mystique et de son lesiba \u2013 instrument traditionnel du Lesotho \u2013 nous entrons dans le village Nazareth surplomb\u00e9 par les montagnes du Lesotho o\u00f9 un drame spirituel est programm\u00e9. Conserver le sacr\u00e9, c\u2019est l\u2019ultime action qui s\u00e9pare Mantoa de sa mort. A cause de son fils jamais revenu de la mine dans laquelle il travaillait, cette femme d\u00e9j\u00e0 frapp\u00e9e par la mort de sa fille, son mari et son petit-fils souhaite les rejoindre. Son visage marqu\u00e9 par une tristesse abyssale, elle apprend que son village sera inond\u00e9 par un projet de barrage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le cimeti\u00e8re dans lequel sont enterr\u00e9s les corps des morts de la guerre de Boers et de la peste noire doit \u00eatre \u00abd\u00e9plac\u00e9\u00bb selon le jargon bureaucratique. Mais pour l\u2019esprit sagace de Mantoa, il s\u2019agit d\u2019un affront profane envers la paix des esprits d\u00e9j\u00e0 de l\u2019autre c\u00f4t\u00e9. Alors qu\u2019elle rev\u00eat sa robe de deuil qu\u2019elle n\u2019\u00f4tera que dans une ultime protestation, les ouvriers en combinaison jaune criard envahissent sa terre. Sa soudaine compr\u00e9hension de l\u2019indiff\u00e9rence de Dieu \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de sa douleur ne fera pas reculer sa r\u00e9volte contre cet assaut de la modernit\u00e9. Cette r\u00e9volte n\u2019en est d\u2019ailleurs pas vraiment une, car d\u00e9terrer les morts soul\u00e8ve des maux au-del\u00e0 du politique, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire des maux spirituels et m\u00e9taphysiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Si Bernanos disait de la civilisation moderne qu\u2019elle \u00e9tait d\u2019abord une conspiration universelle contre toute forme de vie int\u00e9rieure, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese met en sc\u00e8ne cette conspiration jusque dans les cercueils. Ces derniers parviendront paradoxalement \u00e0 donner un dernier souffle de vie \u00e0 Mantoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lutte contre la longue marche du temps<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Si c\u2019est la r\u00e9silience et la r\u00e9volte de Mantoa qui sont racont\u00e9es, c\u2019est aussi l\u2019histoire Nazareth, inspir\u00e9 d\u2019un v\u00e9ritable village de la grand-m\u00e8re de Mosese qui a elle-m\u00eame incarn\u00e9 le combat de Mantoa contre un projet de barrage du m\u00eame genre. Ceci explique peut-\u00eatre la justesse avec laquelle le r\u00e9alisateur met en sc\u00e8ne son r\u00e9cit. C\u2019est l\u2019histoire d\u2019un \u00eelot au fond du Lesotho travers\u00e9 par les \u00e9preuves du temps, s\u2019est transform\u00e9. D\u2019abord appel\u00e9 la \u00abPlaine des Pleureurs\u00bb suite aux morts de la peste noire, puis \u00abNazareth\u00bb, en r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au nouveau Dieu import\u00e9 par les missionnaires chr\u00e9tiens, qui engendrera un m\u00e9lange entre spiritualit\u00e9 et chr\u00e9tient\u00e9. Ce syncr\u00e9tisme, caract\u00e9ristique de l\u2019Afrique, se manifeste \u00e9galement dans le film o\u00f9 des rites shamaniques c\u00f4toient des crucifix. Mais c\u2019est un nouveau Dieu qui est montr\u00e9 ici, un Dieu sans nom, celui du capitalisme remplac\u00e9 par le mot plus s\u00e9duisant de \u00abprogr\u00e8s\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans cette fable du temps qui passe, Mantoa refuse ce renouveau perp\u00e9tuel. Le village constitue son identit\u00e9 et remplacer le cimeti\u00e8re par un barrage brut signe une mort m\u00e9taphysique. Que peut David contre Goliath? Un David qui a remplac\u00e9 son lien avec Dieu par le souhait de la mort, un David qui a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de profaner en creusant sa propre tombe pour esp\u00e9rer retourner en terre. L\u2019invisibilit\u00e9 des liens \u00e9tablis entre Dieu, les morts sont si puissants qu\u2019il devient inutile de les lester d\u2019un poids suppl\u00e9mentaire. L\u2019image de Mantoa en mystique \u00e9chevel\u00e9e coupl\u00e9e \u00e0 une absence d\u2019indice temporel et g\u00e9ographique pr\u00e9cis entretiennent le lien avec le conte r\u00e9aliste confin\u00e9 dans les montagnes l\u00e9sothiennes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Visages paysages<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lui-m\u00eame originaire du Lesotho, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese a puis\u00e9 son inspiration dans son pass\u00e9 familial et de son pays natal, mais aussi dans son m\u00e9tier d\u2019artiste \u2013 \u00e0 la fois cin\u00e9aste, plasticien et po\u00e8te. Sous sa cam\u00e9ra, une esth\u00e9tique parfaitement ma\u00eetris\u00e9e s\u2019affiche. Aid\u00e9 de son directeur de photographie Pierre de Villiers, le cin\u00e9aste ne filme pas ses plans, mais les peint. En r\u00e9unissant les couleurs de la nature, les paysages se d\u00e9voilent au gr\u00e9 de la voix-over du conteur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>En confinant les plans dans un format 4:3, il \u00e9vite l\u2019\u00e9cueil de la carte postale. Personnages et paysages ne font qu\u2019un, l\u2019un prenant la valeur de l\u2019autre jusqu\u2019\u00e0 se confondre. Le gros plan sur le visage marqu\u00e9 de rides de Mantoa rappelle les montagnes plant\u00e9es autour du village. Les personnages sont des \u00eatres profond\u00e9ment terrestres. Tout est fait pour le rappeler: zooms r\u00e9guliers sur les mains en contact direct avec la mati\u00e8re. Elles soignent, p\u00e9trissent, creusent, cueillent imbriqu\u00e9es dans ce tableau filmique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alors que le pr\u00eatre local cite la Bible en parlant du jour o\u00f9 \u00abtoutes les larmes seront effac\u00e9es, et il n&#8217;y aura plus de mort, de deuil, de pleurs ou de douleurs\u00bb (Apocalypse 21:4), l\u2019imposant saule pleureur du village est sci\u00e9. Signe de l\u2019abandon de Dieu envers les damn\u00e9s de la terre? Mosese ne tranche pas la question. Mais Mantoa, elle, choisi de le retrouver peut-\u00eatre. Une r\u00e9volte?
