It has nothing to be ashamed of in the face of the great American productions, and displays great visual and narrative qualities. And yet, it's sad to see that a film questioning the identity of its country should end up being so... American. Dans cette ville charg\u00e9e de symbolisme, trois combattants anti-apartheid se r\u00e9fugient dans une banque du quartier de Silverton suite \u00e0 une op\u00e9ration qui a mal tourn\u00e9. Inspir\u00e9e d\u2019une histoire vraie, l\u2019intrigue nous relate ce si\u00e8ge d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9 des trois combattants, multipliant les revendications et cherchant \u00e0 donner un sens \u00e0 ce qu\u2019ils savent \u00eatre leurs derni\u00e8res heures de libert\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Silverton Siege<\/em> s\u2019inscrit dans la lign\u00e9e des films populaires mettant en sc\u00e8ne des braquages qui ne se d\u00e9roulent pas comme pr\u00e9vu pour y traiter le th\u00e8me de l\u2019apartheid d\u2019Afrique du Sud. Un choix intelligent, puisque le genre comme le th\u00e8me ont en commun l\u2019importance de la fronti\u00e8re physique \u00e0 ne pas franchir. Ici, nos protagonistes noirs investissent un lieu interdit et s\u2019engagent dans un duel psychologique avec les forces de l\u2019ordre blanches. L\u2019occasion de dessiner un panorama social \u00e0 travers les otages pour d\u00e9velopper la question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>L\u2019apartheid \u00e0 travers la prise d\u2019otages<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nous retrouvons un Am\u00e9ricain qui ne sera jamais consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme le symbole de r\u00e9ussite qu\u2019il pense incarner du fait de sa couleur de peau. Autre figure importante, une femme noire travestie en bourgeoise blanche pour tenter de s\u2019extraire de sa condition. Enfin, un soldat noir arriviste qui assume pleinement de troquer sa conscience morale pour mieux s\u2019int\u00e9grer dans les forces de l\u2019ordre gardiennes de l\u2019apartheid. Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 des Blancs les personnages sont \u00e0 l\u2019inverse plus anecdotiques, avec un banquier ouvertement raciste ou une fonctionnaire admirative de la cause embrass\u00e9e par ses gardiens. Mais nous ne pourrons condamner le film au motif qu\u2019il ne se place pas en porte-voix de personnages d\u00e9j\u00e0 si largement entendus dans le cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bien s\u00fbr, nous avons nos trois protagonistes, le cerb\u00e8re de cette banque. Ceux-ci se montrent plus ou moins mena\u00e7ants, plus ou moins fragiles, plus au moins empreints de doutes quant \u00e0 leurs actes. Il est int\u00e9ressant de relever que la grande cause ne rayonne qu\u2019une fois la petite \u00e9touff\u00e9e: ce n\u2019est que lorsque nos individus r\u00e9alisent qu\u2019ils ne pourront s\u2019en sortir qu\u2019ils songent \u00e0 exiger la lib\u00e9ration de Nelson Mandela. Ainsi, malgr\u00e9 quelques facilit\u00e9s communes au genre, le film cherche \u00e0 nuancer son trio de fa\u00e7on bienvenue. Il est pourtant dommage que le film s\u2019embourbe parfois en leur administrant une aura h\u00e9ro\u00efque aux yeux de leurs otages. On finit presque par voir ces derniers faire front avec leurs ge\u00f4liers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>L\u2019h\u00e9g\u00e9monie am\u00e9ricaine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Le cin\u00e9ma d\u2019Afrique du Sud explore depuis longtemps maintenant la question de l\u2019apartheid en pr\u00e9sentant le point de vue de ceux qui en ont souffert. On devrait se r\u00e9jouir de cette diversit\u00e9! Malheureusement, ce point de vue est fortement biais\u00e9 par la large influence am\u00e9ricaine sur le septi\u00e8me art. Difficile de ne pas imiter le premier de classe. Pourtant, certains ont su s\u2019en inspirer sans lui ressembler; repensons au cin\u00e9ma japonais avant et m\u00eame apr\u00e8s l\u2019occupation, o\u00f9 l\u2019influence am\u00e9ricaine ber\u00e7ait des r\u00e9alisateurs comme Kurosawa dans ses grandes productions jusqu\u2019\u00e0 un Ozu dans ses drames familiaux plus intimistes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Silverton Siege<\/em> symbolise bien cette difficult\u00e9 qu\u2019a une grande partie du cin\u00e9ma aujourd\u2019hui encore \u2013 et peut-\u00eatre depuis bient\u00f4t un si\u00e8cle \u2013 \u00e0 trouver son identit\u00e9 hors du mod\u00e8le am\u00e9ricain. Les r\u00e9f\u00e9rences de ce film vont \u00e0 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0113277\/\">Heat<\/a><\/em> ou \u00e0 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0454848\/\">Inside Man<\/a><\/em>, de grandes productions hollywoodiennes. Sa narration ressemble \u00e0 tous les films de braquages d\u00e9j\u00e0 vus. On utilise les m\u00eames ficelles us\u00e9es du cin\u00e9ma dominant pour appuyer le drame. Son distributeur m\u00eame n\u2019est autre que Netflix. Seule se distingue parfois la bande originale, l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment esth\u00e9tique le plus permissif dans la conception d\u2019un film. <em>Silverton Siege<\/em> avait de quoi se distinguer; au bout du compte, il ressemble \u00e0 n\u2019importe quel film connu du public occidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La faute du public<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais finalement, est-ce vraiment sa faute? Pourquoi voit-on surgir cette h\u00e9g\u00e9monie am\u00e9ricaine de fa\u00e7on particuli\u00e8rement d\u00e9rangeante lorsqu\u2019il ne s\u2019agit pas de films am\u00e9ricains? Et surtout, est-ce qu\u2019un long-m\u00e9trage moins marqu\u00e9 par les habitudes narratives et esth\u00e9tiques d\u2019Hollywood permettrait de gagner tout de m\u00eame un large public? Rien n\u2019est moins s\u00fbr. En effet, l\u2019h\u00e9g\u00e9monie du cin\u00e9ma am\u00e9ricain se fait moins ressentir dans la cr\u00e9ation que dans l\u2019attente du public. Alors peut-\u00eatre le public exigera-t-il quelque chose de diff\u00e9rent.
