This reading also leads him to other thoughts.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire l\u2019article (en libre acc\u00e8s)-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These days, I\u2019ve been rereading some writings by Charles P\u00e9guy, who was born on January 7, 1873, in Orl\u00e9ans\u2014it will soon be 150 years ago. Why am I doing this? Not only because the war in Ukraine places us all, whether we like it or not, in the context of an ongoing conflict\u2014with its accompanying horrors, bombings, and refugees\u2014but also because of its similarities to September 1914 in Villeroy, in the Marne region, where P\u00e9guy would fall on September 5, at the age of forty-one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the title <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.payot.ch\/Detail\/le_mecontemporain_peguy_lecteur_du_monde_moderne-alain_finkielkraut-9782070408672\">The Non-Contemporary<\/a><\/em>, Alain Finkielkraut reminded us, some thirty years ago now, of the relevance of this peasant who had studied at the \u00c9cole Normale Sup\u00e9rieure\u2014a Dreyfusard, a Catholic, and a socialist all at once. It seemed to me that reintroducing his poetic, critical\u2014even prophetic\u2014thought into today\u2019s intellectual landscape was a necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00abThe frayed, worn flags, folded at the staff like a sail on a mast\u00bb<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charles P\u00e9guy had founded [the organization] on January 5, 1900 <em>The Fortnightly Journal<\/em>. Despite immense financial difficulties, this publication would nevertheless continue until April 26, 1914. On this subject, allow me to briefly mention here a personal endeavor that, relatively speaking, has often brought me closer to P\u00e9guy. It is that of the cultural journal <em>SPACES<\/em> (1975\u20132000), which I had founded with the poet Vio Martin\u2014a friend of Gustave Roud\u2014and the journalist and choreographer Jacqueline Th\u00e9voz, initially as a supplement to the <em>Moudon Journal<\/em>, and then became independent in January 1980. But let\u2019s get back to P\u00e9guy! It was indeed in June 1909, in an issue of the <em>Fortnightly Journal<\/em>, when he wrote these prophetic lines\u2014lines about a great war that was brewing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u00abThose hundreds of thousands of men leaning down the same slope, their bodies stretched forward. The enormous, moss-covered lines\u2014slender or square, linear or stocky\u2014on the shifting ground, of men with their calves equally taut. And the flags, lying flat like them, fluttering like them, the torn flags, flapping like them, torn like them\u2026 The flags tilted at the same angle, battered like them by the same storm, flapping like them, cracking like branches, like real tree branches, drenched by the same downpour, battered by the same tempest. The frayed, worn-out flags, bent at the pole like a sail on a mast, stretched taut like them, pointing, pointing like them, tossed about like them against the face of the sky, knocked down like them, defeated like them\u2014rising again like them.\u00bb<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m also rereading this \u00abPrayer for Us Mortals,\u00bb which the composer and organist Jehan Alain (1911\u20131940) set to music for tenor, bass, and organ, before he, too, fell on June 20, 1940, on another battlefield, in Saumur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u00abMother, here are your sons, who have fought so hard.<br>Let them not be weighed as one weighs a demon.<br>May God give them a little of that silt<br>\u00bbThat is what they were in principle, and that is what they have become again.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important thing for a writer is to convey what within him demanded to be expressed. But immediately afterward, the work ceases to belong to him. P\u00e9guy explained this on several occasions, and not without anguish.
