Responsable des entr\u00e9es et des friandises, Hilary (Olivia Colman) essaie tant bien que mal de conserver un \u00e9quilibre entre ses coll\u00e8gues distants, son directeur (Colin Firth) qui multiplie les demandes sexuelles et la s\u00e9v\u00e8re d\u00e9pression dont elle souffre chaque jour. Ce quotidien sera bouscul\u00e9 par l\u2019arriv\u00e9e d\u2019un nouvel employ\u00e9, le jeune Stephen (Micheal Ward).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cinema Inferno<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr\u00e8s le triomphe de <em>1917<\/em> et deux <em>James Bond<\/em>, Sam Mendes revient \u00e0 un cin\u00e9ma qui a fait ses premiers succ\u00e8s: le drame du quotidien, ou plut\u00f4t le quotidien comme drame. Ici, ce drame est celui d\u2019une femme bient\u00f4t quinquag\u00e9naire souffrant de d\u00e9pression. La prestation d\u2019Olivia Colman est le point fort du long-m\u00e9trage. D\u00e8s les premi\u00e8res minutes, le personnage parvient \u00e0 nous signifier que, pour elle, le quotidien n\u2019est pas une \u00e9ni\u00e8me repr\u00e9sentation d\u2019une vie banale et morne pour laquelle on attend un renouveau, mais un d\u00e9fi o\u00f9 il s\u2019agit de ne pas craquer face \u00e0 la d\u00e9pression pour ne pas \u00eatre \u00e0 nouveau intern\u00e9e. Le projectionniste, incarn\u00e9 par le toujours tr\u00e8s touchant Toby Jones, nous rappelle que le cin\u00e9ma est l\u2019art de l\u2019illusion. Ainsi, tout le vernis du cin\u00e9ma, des grandes soir\u00e9es qui y sont organis\u00e9es et des beaux discours des films projet\u00e9s, sont contrast\u00e9s par la d\u00e9pression d\u2019Hilary, qui contamine tout. C\u2019est alors qu\u2019on nous fait d\u00e9couvrir les zones obscures du b\u00e2timent. D\u2019anciennes salles abandonn\u00e9es, chang\u00e9es en pigeonniers o\u00f9 notre h\u00e9ro\u00efne se ressource. C\u2019est dans ces d\u00e9cors d\u00e9pouill\u00e9s et magnifiques que notre protagoniste&nbsp;trouve pour un temps refuge. Sam Mendes sait comment sublimer chaque espace comme il sait comment les rendre en ad\u00e9quation avec l\u2019\u00e9tat du personnage. Rapidement, l\u2019\u00e9tat de la salle et le faux vernis r\u00e9sonnent avec les d\u00e9buts de l\u2019\u00e8re Thatcher. Le drame est national et intime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Une platitude magnifique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Malheureusement, toute la beaut\u00e9 et l\u2019\u00e9nergie d\u2019<em>Empire of Light<\/em> se retrouvent aspir\u00e9es par Stephen, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 par Micheal Ward. Son personnage est vide, il ne s\u2019incarne qu\u2019\u00e0 travers sa couleur de peau. On s\u2019interroge sur la relation qu\u2019il noue avec Hilary et les r\u00e9ponses que le film nous apporte sont toujours d\u00e9cevantes. Cela se ressent par la succession de sc\u00e8nes d\u00e9monstratives parfois embarrassantes lorsqu\u2019elles servent exclusivement \u00e0 nous montrer \u00e0 quel point le jeune Stephen est aimable et patient. Le choix d\u2019accorder une telle importance \u00e0 ce personnage est d\u2019autant plus \u00e9trange qu\u2019elle fait de l\u2019ombre \u00e0 ceux qui auraient pu donner une r\u00e9elle dynamique \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre. Nous pensons au directeur et \u00e0 sa relation ambigu\u00eb avec son employ\u00e9e: est-il conscient des peines de celle-ci? En profite-t-il? Plus encore, les sc\u00e8nes port\u00e9es par Toby Jones r\u00e9v\u00e8lent le plein potentiel du film. Qui de mieux que le projectionniste pour aborder toute cette th\u00e9matique de l\u2019illusion, de l\u2019envers du d\u00e9cor? Pourquoi ne pas s\u2019arr\u00eater un peu plus sur cette transition du pays dans l\u2019\u00e8re Thatcher, dont le cin\u00e9ma aurait beaucoup \u00e0 dire?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le reproche r\u00e9current adress\u00e9 \u00e0 <em>1917<\/em> d\u2019une forme prenant le pas sur un fond et un r\u00e9cit&nbsp;\u00e9tait erron\u00e9. Ce faux plan-s\u00e9quence parvenait \u00e0 raconter quatre ans d\u2019une guerre meurtri\u00e8re avec une efficacit\u00e9 rarement \u00e9gal\u00e9e. Ici, le m\u00eame reproche est fond\u00e9. L\u2019image magnifique et les couloirs de l\u2019Empire Cinema vous hanteront encore longtemps. La d\u00e9pression vous \u00e9voquera l\u2019appartement d\u2019Hilary, plong\u00e9 dans une p\u00e9nombre qui vous fait oublier le drame qui se joue. Mais au-del\u00e0 des images et d\u2019un visage \u00e0 mettre sur la d\u00e9pression, restera-t-il quelque chose?
