The landlady is not at all surprised by Leila's presence. She asks if they had a good night's sleep. Joseph is a little embarrassed, so Leila answers. She's in a good mood, but he doesn't dare look at her. He feels he's betrayed her. Leila knows what's bothering him and takes his hand. The widow smiles indulgently.

- When are you planning to visit your grandparents?

- This morning.

- Give them my regards.

The sky has moved away, the sun has cooled. The earth is hard, it was cold last night.

Joseph runs into his comrades from the day before. They all smile friendly at him. Some are surprised to see him up so early. Well, he can hold his liquor... He's a good guy after all. They stop to chat in the village square. His new friends are not afraid to talk loudly. Women and children come out onto their balconies. We're happy to see that Joseph gets on well with everyone. This man deserved his place.

The men talk to him about their love of the land, their pride in living in the mountains, the hard day's work ahead, their families, and even their personal worries. He is asked for advice. Joseph no longer hesitates, letting himself be carried away by the wave of happiness in his heart and answering as if he had known these men and their story all his life, as if he were really part of their group. We're satisfied with his answers. We find him intelligent. We wonder why we'd never thought of it ourselves. We thank him and remind him that he can always count on the locals.

Joseph apologizes for having to leave them so soon, explaining that he hasn't yet seen his grandparents. The villagers praise Marguerite and Aimé. They tell him that his grandfather did so much for the community, and that he was one of its pillars for a long time. It was difficult when we learned that he was ill and had to retire from public life. And what about Marguerite, the guardian of words? She consoled many. Joseph is very lucky to still have them both.

They don't hold him back any longer. Moved by what the villagers have told him, he runs to his grandparents.

At the door, he stiffens. Joseph fears they won't recognize him. He thinks about his life since the accident and decides to ring the bell. A small woman opens the door. The two of them stood in the doorway without saying a word, then Marguerite kissed him and shed a few tears in relief. She was afraid she'd never see him again. Joseph knew this and felt guilty. He should have told her, or better still, he should have come right away. How could he have thought for a second that his grandparents had forgotten him? The pain was intense, but his presence was enough to erase it all. What matters now is that he's there, with her, on the doorstep, alive.

- I'm sorry, Grandma... I'm so sorry.

- Oh, what are you talking about? We knew you'd come, there was no doubt.

Of course she's lying. Of course everyone doubted. But that doesn't matter anymore; today, all is forgiven.

- Come on in! It'll be fun.

The interior is immersed in a glowing half-light. Curtains screen the light. Joseph faces the gigantic cupboards that so frightened him as a child. Behind their glass doors, he finds the earthenware dishes decorated by the village craftsmen. On the old chests of drawers, the photographs have not changed place, and his father's little trinkets and toys are still there. Joseph recognizes the paintings hanging in the living room; the artists are all unknown. There's an earthy smell - the plants his grandmother loves so much, but whose names he doesn't know. In one corner, the least lit part of the room, stands a wall of books; this is the library. Underneath is a bed reserved for the reader. Joseph knew him well. He almost never read at home...

- Come and see your grandfather Joseph. I think he's asleep.

Marguerite opens the door to their bedroom, making as little noise as possible. There he is, curled up in the sheets. He's not breathing very well. Joseph takes her hand.

- Don't be sad. Your grandfather's in no hurry to leave. He's going to stay with us for a while. And you're going to live here. You know you'll always be welcome with us. You can come whenever you like, and there'll always be someone to let you in. You don't have to worry.

These words touch him deeply. His throat tightens, his eyes wet. He doesn't want to cry, but he can't help it. He mustn't be ashamed to cry in front of his grandmother, and besides, what can a grandson hide from his grandmother? She knows everything instinctively, understands everything without explanation. Marguerite expected her grandson to be upset, but she also knew she'd have no trouble consoling him.

- I'll make some tea.

They drink on the reader's bed.

- Have you been reading in town?

- No, unfortunately. I didn't have time because of work...

- Well, well, well. Funny, you always liked to read. You didn't really like solitude. Real solitude, the kind that annoys because it's silent and promises nothing. I remember when you were young. You'd come for a snack, and then you'd sit on this sofa with a book you couldn't take your eyes off. I'd give you advice and you'd read everything. At first I thought you liked to get away from it all, that you enjoyed long journeys, but also because I'd heard that things weren't going as well as your parents would have liked at school... Then one day you said something curious to me: «Tell me, Grandma, why do books lie? I don't want to be lied to. No, I don't. I don't like it.» I was speechless. Because, as you can imagine, your poor grandmother didn't know what to say. So I said, «No, you'll see. In the end, we always tell you the truth.» But that wasn't enough. You added: «Grandma, I feel like I'm being cheated. But you know, I don't want to be deceived.» It was funny and terrifying all at once. Sometimes you said that reading made you suffer and that all books were written by bastards. Then one day, you told me you wanted to write your own book. Without deceiving yourself or others. You were going to war like a conqueror. You really touched me, and I laughed because I only half-believed you were a bit crazy. But wait a minute... Maybe you'd like to read these texts? And I've kept everything. I'll get that for you.

Marguerite opens a few drawers and rummages around. After a while, she returns with some leaflets in her hand. She hands them to him, happy to be able to share a moment with her grandson. She is nostalgic. Joseph reads with a certain gravity. After a few lines, he relaxes and smiles. Finally, he laughs without restraint.

- But... Ah! Ah! I don't understand myself!

- Yes, that's what I told you. Then you, oh, how angry you were! You threw a tantrum and left, shouting that if we couldn't understand, it meant that writing without cheating was impossible! You'd never read again! Ever again! And you went home crying. I was all shook up. But I told myself you'd get over it, and indeed, a few days later, you were at home, in your usual place, immersed in your reading.

- Can I keep these pages? It'll be a story to tell! A fond memory of my quest for truth...

- Of course you can.

- Thanks, Grandma. I won't hang around too long, as I may be needed in the village.

- Won't you stay and eat?

Marguerite knows him well. They sit at the table and talk about village affairs. Joseph wants to know more about his grandparents. He doesn't know what happened after he left. They lose track of time. When the sun is about to disappear behind the mountains, they part reluctantly, as if they would never see each other again. Marguerite denies this absurd fear, dictated by the affection her grandson shows her. She takes him in her arms as she did when he was a child and says:

- See you tomorrow, my beloved grandson.

- See you tomorrow, Grandma.

More next month.

You have just read an episode published in Le Regard Libre N°94.

You can read the previous episode.

Joseph is well and truly back with his family.
