En retrouvant sa m\u00e8re, elle reconstitue les souvenirs d\u2019un pass\u00e9 de la fin des ann\u00e9es&nbsp;70, au fond d\u2019une for\u00eat des Etats-Unis. Entour\u00e9e par un p\u00e8re exigeant, une m\u00e8re soutenante et quatre fr\u00e8res dont elle est la cadette, l\u2019enfant assiste \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tiolement progressif de ce foyer qui prend peu \u00e0 peu des allures de prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sur les traces de Terrence Malick<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Il faut d\u2019abord saluer le travail de Steven Michael Hayes pour ce premier film, qui saisit parfaitement l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 qu\u2019offre ce cadre pour d\u00e9ployer son style: un style d\u2019h\u00e9ritier de Terrence Malick, avec sa cam\u00e9ra flottante, ses grands angles pour embrasser ses personnages et, autour d\u2019eux, la nature. On retrouve aussi une multiplication des points de vue incarn\u00e9s par des voix off lentes et introspectives. Si cette influence peut parfois \u00eatre un peu trop prononc\u00e9e, elle n\u2019atteint n\u00e9anmoins jamais la parodie ou l\u2019\u00e9c\u0153urement, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une retenue bienvenue. On s\u2019incline ainsi devant la capacit\u00e9 du cin\u00e9aste \u00e0 se d\u00e9tacher de son ma\u00eetre en \u00e9vitant de se perdre dans une esth\u00e9tique qui n\u2019a parfois d\u2019autres buts que de se laisser admirer. Ici, chaque sc\u00e8ne sert une intrigue et un propos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u2019est cette m\u00eame retenue qui accompagne nos personnages. La m\u00e8re, interpr\u00e9t\u00e9e par <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1628115\/\">Juliet Rylance<\/a>, n\u2019a pas besoin de dialogues pour montrer son soutien \u00e0 ses enfants face \u00e0 un p\u00e8re parfois tyrannique et violent. Quant au p\u00e8re, port\u00e9 par un excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1670601\/\">Tom Pelphrey<\/a>, il contraste toujours entre la frayeur qu\u2019inspirent ses col\u00e8res et le path\u00e9tique de ses remords. Une figure de p\u00e8re violent, mais incapable de lever la main sur ses enfants.&nbsp;<em>Jill<\/em> est un film intelligent, un film qui pousse \u00e0 la nuance \u2013 une nuance paradoxalement radicale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">L\u2019utopie cloisonn\u00e9e<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Si le film parvient \u00e0 ces subtilit\u00e9s, c\u2019est aussi parce qu\u2019il ne pouvait en \u00eatre autrement. L\u2019histoire se construit sous forme de conflit entre un p\u00e8re tyrannique qui rejette la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 moderne dans son ensemble pour privil\u00e9gier un retour \u00e0 la nature utopique, et ses enfants de plus en plus attir\u00e9s par le monde civilis\u00e9. Un conflit dans lequel le spectateur est imm\u00e9diatement invit\u00e9 \u00e0 prendre parti. Car si cet espace naturel peut charmer, le film nous pr\u00e9sente rapidement ses fondements plus sombres: ce monde utopique ne tient que sur la d\u00e9testation de la civilisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read also | <a href=\"https:\/\/leregardlibre.com\/en\/cinema\/midsommar-un-festival-dhorreur\/\"><em>Midsommar<\/em>, un festival d\u2019horreur<\/a><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Le p\u00e8re l\u2019illustre tout au long du film: adh\u00e9rant \u00e0 des th\u00e8ses complotistes en tout genre (sans pour autant manquer d\u2019\u00e9ducation), convaincu que le \u00abvivre ensemble\u00bb constitue un mensonge permanent, incapable d\u2019\u00e9couter le moindre politicien sans accuser sa corruption, il ne cherche qu\u2019\u00e0 enfermer sa famille dans la parano\u00efa qui le ronge. L\u2019utopie est une place forte dont les barricades servent parfois moins \u00e0 se couper du monde qu\u2019\u00e0 emp\u00eacher les membres de la famille d\u2019y acc\u00e9der. <em>Jill<\/em> se pr\u00e9sente comme un v\u00e9ritable huis clos \u00e0 ciel ouvert o\u00f9 les arbres font office de barreaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Le prisme du critique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tout film porte en lui un discours sur le cin\u00e9ma et <em>Jill<\/em> ne fait pas exception. Ici, les enjeux sont construits autour du p\u00e8re, refusant radicalement de chercher la nuance dans le monde qui l\u2019entoure. Le discours du film&nbsp;se d\u00e9veloppe ainsi. C\u2019est pour cela qu\u2019il multiplie les points de vue et donne la parole \u00e0 chaque personnage. Comme <em>Rash\u014dmon<\/em> au milieu des bois, il repr\u00e9sente ici diverses perspectives de la situation et diff\u00e9rentes fa\u00e7ons de la vivre. Il faut le reconna\u00eetre: le critique moderne, h\u00e9ritier des jeunes turcs des Cahiers, se laisse encore bien trop souvent aller aux facilit\u00e9s de la pol\u00e9mique. Sa radicalit\u00e9 est un confort qui ne sert que sa personne, au d\u00e9triment du film et de sa t\u00e2che. Etre critique, n\u2019est-ce pas au contraire \u00eatre sensible aux nombreuses lumi\u00e8res qu\u2019un film peut renvoyer? Ne doit-il pas distinguer celles qui \u00e9clairent le mieux et les souligner? Quel int\u00e9r\u00eat de choisir le prisme du politique chez Tarantino ou du sch\u00e9ma narratif chez Hong Sang-soo? Il serait tentant de r\u00e9duire <em>Jill<\/em> aux codes du drame, que le cin\u00e9aste r\u00e9utilise sans les remettre en question et en tombant parfois dans les clich\u00e9s les plus \u00e9cul\u00e9s. Mais ce serait \u00eatre aveugle \u00e0 ce que ce premier long-m\u00e9trage offre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certes, on pourrait regretter que <em>Jill<\/em> ne r\u00e9volutionne pas le genre. Il poss\u00e8de aussi des r\u00e9pliques un peu trop rigides et dirigistes, soucieux de nous dire quoi penser de ce qu\u2019il nous pr\u00e9sente. Pourtant, il est avant tout un film riche, qui invite \u00e0 l\u2019introspection, au questionnement, sans jamais chercher \u00e0 prendre le spectateur de haut. Par son th\u00e8me, sa narration et son esth\u00e9tique, <em>Jill<\/em>&nbsp;a toute sa place parmi les \u0153uvres qui cherchent \u00e0 abattre nos barricades.
