Cette derni\u00e8re r\u00e9pond aux critiques r\u00e9centes autour de la m\u00e9moire de l\u2019homme d\u2019affaires ayant fait fortune gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019esclavage. Judicieux!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Lire le commentaire (en libre acc\u00e8s)-->\n\n\n\n<p>La nuit du 12 juillet 2020, la statue de bronze de David de Pury install\u00e9e sur la place portant son nom est asperg\u00e9e de peinture rouge. Ses auteurs, s\u2019inscrivant dans le contexte international du mouvement anti-raciste Black Lives Matter, revendiquent une action contre le commerce des esclaves dont le n\u00e9gociant neuch\u00e2telois a tir\u00e9 une grande partie de sa richesse. S\u2019ensuit une p\u00e9tition demandant le d\u00e9boulonnement de la statue et une r\u00e9ponse de la Ville: un appel \u00e0 projets artistiques pour encadrer et contrebalancer la pol\u00e9mique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deux ans plus tard, la premi\u00e8re des deux \u0153uvres choisies est d\u00e9voil\u00e9e. Il s\u2019agit de&nbsp;<em>Great in the concrete<\/em>&nbsp;de Mathias Pfund. Quelques m\u00e8tres devant la statue initiale, un petit bronze repr\u00e9sente David de Pury, la t\u00eate en bas, fich\u00e9e dans le socle en b\u00e9ton. Un geste iconoclaste! L\u2019artiste genevois cherche ainsi \u00e0 d\u00e9caler le regard et nous faire appara\u00eetre les&nbsp;\u00abgrands hommes\u00bb sous un jour moins glorifi\u00e9. De cette confrontation, il en r\u00e9sulte un habile jeu de miroirs qui pr\u00e9sente le bienfaiteur de la ville sous deux visages: l\u2019un tr\u00e8s consacr\u00e9, dans la plus pure tradition des sculptures comm\u00e9moratives; l\u2019autre plus effac\u00e9 et surpass\u00e9 par l\u2019histoire coloniale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plut\u00f4t que de d\u00e9boulonner les statues, d\u00e9boulonner les m\u00e9taphores<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019\u0153uvre de Mathias Pfund peut \u00e9galement se voir comme une m\u00e9taphore: l\u2019adage \u00abdes nains juch\u00e9s sur les \u00e9paules de g\u00e9ants\u00bb illustrant l\u2019importance de prendre appui sur les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations ant\u00e9rieures pour appr\u00e9hender le monde se retrouve ici retourn\u00e9. La querelle des anciens et des modernes a bascul\u00e9. Il n\u2019est plus question de prendre exemple sur les figures d\u2019avant, mais de renverser le pass\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les deux \u0153uvres sont accompagn\u00e9es par une plaquette explicative qui a pour but de situer bri\u00e8vement la vie de ce n\u00e9gociant du XVIII<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;si\u00e8cle et l\u2019\u00e9rection posthume de la statue. \u00abIl s\u2019agit \u00e9galement d\u2019un hommage aux personnes priv\u00e9es de libert\u00e9, exploit\u00e9es et d\u00e9shumanis\u00e9es dans le cadre du commerce triangulaire\u00bb, a expliqu\u00e9 Thomas Facchinetti, conseiller communal en charge de la coh\u00e9sion sociale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au printemps prochain, ce sera au tour de l\u2019artiste neuch\u00e2telois Nathan Solioz d\u2019exposer&nbsp;<em>Ignis Fatuus<\/em>, une installation lumineuse \u00e9voquant les \u00e2mes des esclaves morts lors des travers\u00e9es de l\u2019Atlantique en bateau, hantant encore les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s actuelles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Une d\u00e9marche globale de mise en lumi\u00e8re&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ces deux \u0153uvres s\u2019inscrivent dans une volont\u00e9 de sensibilisation et de questionnement historique de la Ville, puisque d\u2019autres actions devraient \u00eatre prochainement mises sur pied pour mieux conna\u00eetre la participation de Neuch\u00e2tel \u00e0 la traite coloniale, \u00e0 l\u2019instar du parcours p\u00e9dagogique et interactif \u00abNeuch\u00e2tel, empreintes coloniales\u00bb, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 inaugur\u00e9 le 22 mars dernier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plut\u00f4t que de c\u00e9der \u00e0 la vindicte populaire demandant le retrait de la statue incrimin\u00e9e, la Ville a pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 lever le voile sur certaines zones d\u2019ombre de son histoire au moyen d\u2019un dialogue artistique. Une r\u00e9ponse intelligente, mesur\u00e9e, \u00e0 la&nbsp;<em>cancel culture<\/em>&nbsp;<em>(ndlr: la culture de l\u2019annulation, \u00e0 laquellent participent les d\u00e9boulonnages de statue ou les censures d\u2019\u0153uvres)<\/em>. Si la m\u00e9thode choc consistant \u00e0 vandaliser un \u00e9difice public est fortement regrettable, cela a n\u00e9anmoins permis de secouer les esprits et de donner naissance \u00e0 tout un processus de r\u00e9flexion au sein des autorit\u00e9s communales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finalement, c\u2019est un v\u00e9ritable acquis quand un tel sujet arrive dans le d\u00e9bat public.
