A look at the news - Loris S. Musumeci<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevl\u00fct Cavusoglu was not in Zurich on March 12. He ended up in Metz. The big names of the governing party are not only touring their own country, but also several European nations. They have to convince the local and \u00e9migr\u00e9 population to vote in favor of the April 16 referendum on a constitutional amendment. The aim is to replace the current parliamentary system with a presidential one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's power will increase considerably if the \u00abyes\u00bb vote wins. He will be able to issue decrees, appoint his own ministers and senior civil servants, dissolve parliament and declare a state of emergency: as in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

What the Turkish people want remains a Turkish matter. The European Union has no business getting involved. On the other hand, the campaign for acceptance of the referendum proposal runs into difficulties when played out on foreign soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The reason for the Turkish minister's absence from Zurich is a mystery. The fact remains, however, that he was not turned away. This was also the case in Germany and Holland. Which diplomacy adopted the best attitude? The question is anything but politically easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In view of the increasingly totalitarian nature of Erdogan's regime, we thought we were doing the right thing by blocking the way to his propaganda. Dirty with excessive arrests and omerta since last July's failed putsch, the new presumed Eastern dictator arouses hatred and sows terror. As a result, he does not accept being played for a fool. His retort is violent, even insane. Germany and Holland, he claims, are practicing fascism, the Nazism of yesteryear. The two defendants obviously refuse the insulting attack. Especially since the criticism comes from a statesman with strong authoritarian tendencies. Bad faith or real conviction? Whatever. Either way, an unhealthy spiral is being set in motion between Europe and Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

And yet, for the time being - however short - neutral Helvetia is managing to protect itself from the bad climate. The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Didier Burkhalter, has apparently made the right choice. Despite cantonal reluctance to receive Mr Cavusoglu for so-called security reasons, the Confederation decided otherwise in the name of freedom of expression. And this is perhaps the key to success. Not only has Switzerland avoided embarrassing and offensive threats from Turkey's moustachioed leader, it has also set an example by providing a safe forum for debate against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when many activists, politicians and journalists are suffering the silence of a prison, the former Ottoman land is surely in dire need of a lesson in \u00abdevelopment and justice\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
