The controversy is chronic, resurfacing at every outing of the Suis-se soccer team. And when it comes to major events like Euro 2016 in France, the controversy is amplified. Some of the media and spectators groan when they discover that the majority of our beloved \u00abnati\u00bb players don't sing the national anthem. Swiss hymn<\/em>. Traitors to the nation, mercenaries out of touch with reality - these are the criticisms levelled by these Sunday patriots. The selected ones retort that attachment to a country is not limited to a futile national anthem. Nothing seems to unite the two camps.<\/p>\n

The question of the national anthem is an interesting one. It often says a great deal about the history of a country and its evolution. Take Visit<\/em> Marseillaise<\/em>, le chant de la R\u00e9volution fran\u00e7aise, celui d\u2019une population se battant pour sa libert\u00e9 qui semble aujourd\u2019hui totalement d\u00e9pass\u00e9 et m\u00eame obsc\u00e8ne quand il est chant\u00e9 par les repr\u00e9sentants d\u2019un Etat providence ob\u00e8se ou par son peuple qui a depuis longtemps oubli\u00e9 ce qu\u2019\u00e9tait la libert\u00e9, et dont les seuls combats consistent \u00e0 demander plus d’Etat. On est loin de l\u2019esprit initial.<\/p>\n

In Switzerland, until the end of the 19th century\u00e8me <\/sup>century, there was no official anthem. One explanation could be that, unlike our neighbors, our unification was not the result of a bloody war (Sonderbund, less than a hundred dead) and did not require any kind of fighters' song. The first Swiss anthem, \u00d4 Independent Mountains<\/em>, composed by Johann Rudolf Wyss in 1811, to music by God Save the Queen<\/em>, has now fallen into total anonymity. His words, far more relevant to me than those of the current version, are nevertheless worth remembering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

To put an end to the confusion between \u00d4 Independent Mountains <\/em>et l’hymne anglais, sur d\u00e9cision du Conseil f\u00e9d\u00e9ral, le Swiss hymn<\/em> est introduit d\u00e9finitivement en avril 1981, vingt ans apr\u00e8s son intronisation provisoire. Malgr\u00e9 de nombreuses tentatives, il n\u2019a plus \u00e9volu\u00e9 depuis. Jug\u00e9 d\u00e9pass\u00e9 par certains, il souffre d\u2019un manque de consid\u00e9ration ; tr\u00e8s peu de citoyens connaissant l\u2019entier des paroles. Une partie en ignore m\u00eame le rythme. M\u00eame les essais de r\u00e9formes ne rencontrent que peu d’int\u00e9r\u00eat.<\/p>\n

The polemics surrounding EURO 2016 are clearly artificial. One solution would be to put an end to this masquerade which, apart from stirring up controversy, serves no purpose whatsoever. Let's do away with the hymns just before the matches. That would save us a slew of outrageous articles, and above all the sight of rednecks bellowing at the top of their lungs, dripping with beer.<\/p>\n
