Editions du Cerf has embarked on an ambitious and perilous adventure, publishing a three-volume set of over 900 pages each on Le Coran des Historiens. The ambition of the first volume is to provide an overview of research on the Koran, its historical, religious and literary environment, its writing, canonization and reception by what were to become the two main branches of Islam, the Sunnis and the Shiites. The other two volumes are devoted to a sura-by-sura exegesis of the text of the Koran.
A generation ago, the term charisma had a strong religious connotation. It was a divine gift enjoyed by a person who had a duty to use it for the good of his or her community. Today, charisma has become more simply the ability to convince crowds through the charm of one's personality.
