Fribourg International Film Festival - Amélie Wauthier
It's the story of a guy who gets lost. In reality, it's a little more complicated than that, but not necessarily more interesting:
Lukas is sent on a mission for the OSCE, somewhere in Ukraine. A succession of unfortunate decisions leads him to lose everything. Alongside Vova, an eccentric native in her fifties, and his mother and daughter, Lukas learns to live with nothing: no boss, no salary, no minister, no police.
So, yes, you could say that this film is very kafkaesque!, But isn't it more a way of letting people know that, one day, you've read something other than Marc Lévy and that, deep down, you're a complex being too? cultured? Because if Volcano manages to raise a smile or two through the absurdity of certain situations - an absurdity that could have been exploited more fully - it is above all a 106-minute long film during which we wonder where the director intends to take us. So I'll spare you this boring review and suggest you reread the FIFF program to see something else. Otherwise, you can always read the excellent reviews of Regard Libre.
Overheard at the end of the screening: «It was poetic, but it didn't make sense, and at the same time, war doesn't make sense». Thank you, dear anonymous viewer, it's on your wise words that I'll conclude!
