We always speak of immigration in the singular, as if it were a unique phenomenon. However, the reality is more complex, for in addition to its legal, economic and humanitarian aspects, the problem of immigration is first and foremost one of culture and identity. This, in any case, is what we can learn from reading Samuel Huntington's Clash of Civilizations.

Peut-on distinguer entre différents types d’immigration selon les régions d’origine? C’est la question qui fâche, titillant la sensibilité bien trop à vif des inquisiteurs contemporains. Répondez «oui», et c’est la polémique assurée. Pourtant, la fenêtre d’Overton s’étant considérablement élargie, la question n’est plus aussi taboue. Une vision plus pragmatique des relations internationales s’impose et permet un vrai débat.
