For Kant, the German philosopher, lying is always an act to be banished, as it destroys trust within society and undermines the moral law in man. For Constant, the French philosopher, lying can be virtuous depending on the context. Crossed views.
Tales of the end of the world have been told throughout the ages, and still exist today. These dire predictions conceal...
The frontier, increasingly decried in Western countries over the past sixty decades, is now making a comeback. Talk of a world without borders is no longer so appealing, for a number of reasons. Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a powerful demonstration of the absurdity of talking about independence without territory. What's more, it's clear that the idea of a united Europe in the face of the many challenges of our times (war, terrorism, immigration...) requires recognition of its external borders, which are extensions of the internal borders of the countries that make it up. Borders are the markers of a country's history: they define its contours, not only geographically, but also culturally. At least, that's the idea behind Régis Debray's Eloge des frontières.
Current events in Ukraine remind us that the reality of war is far from over. There's a little...
Le Regard Libre N° 85 - Enzo Santacroce Dossier «Switzerland, definition» Challenging seems to be the hallmark of democracy. To take...
DOSSIER «L'HOMME ET L'ANIMAL», Enzo Santacroce | Animals occupy a central place in the human environment. They are both endearing companions and savage, aggressive beasts to be slaughtered. This ambivalence is actually our own, since ethologists have demonstrated that the continuity between animal and human behavior is based on the search for food, material security and habitat construction. Seduction games are no exception. The similarities are sometimes so disturbing that the definition of man, and his place within nature, are constantly called into question. In the long history of these ambiguous relationships, animal trials, a veritable institution between the 16th and 17th centuries, bear witness to the fascination that animals hold for mankind.
DOSSIER IRONIE, Enzo Santacroce | Freedom of expression is inextricably linked to the critical spirit. Seductive, it is nonetheless a force of opposition that pits its defenders against sometimes extreme dangers. Many Western philosophers have experienced this first-hand, banished, excommunicated or even condemned to death for defying the authorities by taking disturbing positions. Why is the free use of thought, and by extension speech, so perilous? We take a look at Socrates, the symbol of a critical spirit sacrificed on the altar of conformism, to see just how fragile freedom of expression still is today.
LONG FORMAT ARTICLE, Enzo Santacroce | Nietzsche, the multi-faceted philosopher, was as much reclaimed and hijacked by Nazi ideology as by the anarchist forces driving the students of May '68. How can we explain the fact that the thinking of this brilliant mind has been co-opted by both brown and red? The German philosopher's fragmented and deliberately shocking statements certainly contributed to his misunderstanding. However, his lucid critique of a Western society now living without transcendence is highly topical, in that the only acceptable value today is that of health, understood as the annihilation of suffering. Aware of this decline early on, Nietzsche developed a tonic response based on the will expressed by the body, finally rehabilitated in its desiring dimension.
Like Pandora's box, the question of the Covid certificate, once opened, unleashes a multitude of complex themes that question our relationship to authority. It also reveals that modern thinking has yet to mature with regard to the difficult question of the dividing line between the public and private spheres, which 19th-century liberals had highlighted in their writings. By way of example, the media and the general public talk about the majority and the minority, without realizing that the latter is actually threatened in this new episode of the Covid certificate in the pandemic soap opera. Indeed, non-vaccinators will soon be considered persona non grata in the public arena, which is reminiscent of the mechanisms of social stigmatization, particularly tragic in the case of the Covid certificate.
