«To life, to love, to Marwen!»

Mark Hogancamp leads a normal life. However, he spends much more time in his imaginary world than in real life. Because in real life, Mark is terribly shy, weak and paranoid. Mark is ill. This is due to the shock he experienced some time ago. Beaten almost to death by five guys outside a bar, he remained psychologically fragile, withdrawn and amnesiac. But in the world he's imagined, Captain Hogie, his alter ego, is brave, handsome, muscular, courageous and surrounded by women who protect and love him.

In fact, this world is not so imaginary as to be purely mental. Mark has set up an entire village, Marwen, in the Belgium of World War II.
