The culture of debate and cultural debate, again and again
Drawing by Nathanaël Schmid for Le Regard Libre
On the occasion of this 100th number, Let's celebrate pluralism, and its corollaries of tolerance and freedom of expression. When the Regard Libre, We could never have imagined the extent to which these key words of our magazine would need to be defended.
Filling a gap in the life of ideas. That was our goal when we created this magazine in January 2014, on a student scale. It remains so today, on the scale of the media and academic world. Now the first Swiss publication in the catalog of Cairn.info (the largest French-language portal for humanities and news articles), as well as a key player in the organization of society debates at the Geneva Book Fair, Le Regard Libre is now a benchmark title on the French-speaking intellectual scene. The objective has therefore been partly achieved, and it's time to live up to it. We're more aware than ever of this for the future. But in the meantime, let's take advantage of this very special issue to look back on the work we've accomplished, and to celebrate our anniversary!
The pluralism of Regard Libre
Let's celebrate pluralism, and its corollaries tolerance and freedom of expression. Almost ten years ago, we couldn't have imagined the extent to which these key words of the Regard Libre would be in danger, and therefore to be defended at all costs. The same goes for culture, which both feeds into discussions and can itself be the subject of them.
Le Regard Libre is on the side of those who love debate. Le Regard Libre is on the side of humanist culture and mutual learning. Le Regard Libre is on the side of truth, never fully achieved, yet always to be sought. Le Regard Libre sides with the left and right who can't stand wokism, with liberals who oppose the closed-mindedness of some conservatives, and with conservatives who confront the sectarianism of some liberals. Le Regard Libre is on the side of the fight against dead dogma. The fight goes on, for at least another hundred issues!
And if this volunteer adventure can continue, it's thanks to you. You, our readers, who believed in us when we were still printing in stapled black-and-white format. You, our partners, who didn't wait until we had a big audience to support us. You, patrons, friends and supportive media, who will recognize you. And you, dear colleagues, past and present... What a feat these hundred issues have been!
