The label of «progressive» and the opposite label of «conservative» or, as the case may be, «reactionary» are now ubiquitous in describing each other's positions on political and social issues. For the proponents of each of these two caricatural camps, calling one's opponent a «reactionary» or, on the contrary, a «progressive» is often enough to discredit them.
