One of the most eagerly awaited shows at Vidy
L'œuvre de Besson reste signifiante aujourd'hui.
Meeting with the playwright of the Théâtre de Vidy
Swiss stages often open up to other actors and directors from all over the world. And here we find the rare pearls of today's and tomorrow's theater. The forty-third edition of Geneva's La Bâtie festival welcomed an intriguing personality in the person of Jaha Koo. Originally from South Korea, this artist presents a multimedia theater at the crossroads of his personal trajectory, history and socio-political issues. An actor-creator, performer, video artist and musical composer, Jaha Koo has arrived in Geneva with his creation Cuckoo. It features him accompanied by three rice cookers from South Korea's popular Cuckoo brand. Gifted with words, the three cookers recount their problems and, interspersed with the artist and the video, plunge us into South Korean history, that of the 1997 financial crisis which, even today, has left its mark on Korean society. With this interview, Le Regard Libre takes you to meet the man who will undoubtedly go down as one of the great theatre-makers of this century.
For a theater of division
Following our meeting with Laetitia Dosch about the revival of her show Hate, we wanted to find out more about Corazón (the horse in Hate), and the person who runs the place where he spent his life and was raised. So, on Wednesday June 19, your editor returned to Gimel to meet Judith Zagury, co-founder of the Shanju workshop-school. An actress and playwright, Judith kindly agreed to meet us over tea to answer our questions.
Nowadays, the figure of the animal is making a comeback on our contemporary stages, whether through costumes or, more specifically, through real animals treading the boards. However, unlike in other eras, it would seem that these animals no longer question our humanity as mere mirrors, but are endowed with genuine human capacities, particularly in terms of relationships.
Announced as the first major event of this theatrical season at Vidy, the European Philosophical Song Contest by Lausanne artists Massimo Furlan and Claire de Ribaupierre aims to put philosophy to music on the stage and thus stimulate critical thinking. Le Regard Libre attended last Friday, and although the show is a masterpiece of staging, the thinking seems little present, or even absorbed by the form of the performance; as a result, one can't help wondering at times, like the Pixies' song: Where Is My Mind?
From August 29 to September 15, the forty-third edition of Geneva's La Bâtie festival will take place. It's an opportunity for the event to «mark the occasion» and showcase some of the biggest names on the scene, as well as offering a diverse program of dance, theater and music.
