«The middle of the horizon», at the crossroads of a lifetime
Today, adapting a novel for the cinema is a common occurrence. But to bring a multi-award-winning book to the screen with only one feature film under your belt is a rather ambitious undertaking. From the author to the lead actor, from the production team to the director, Le milieu de l'horizon is an (almost) pure Swiss product which, while borrowing from local color, manages to open up to current and, above all, profoundly universal themes.
«A rainy day in New York», a pleasant little summer drizzle
Initially scheduled for release in 2018, when it was thought to have been buried in the wake of accusations of sexual assault levelled at its director Woody Allen, A Rainy Day in New York arrives in cinemas. And, even though the affair reignited by the #MeToo movement dates back to 2013, for viewers the situation is tricky. Should we boycott the filmmaker and his work, following the example of certain protagonists who, according to rumor, donated their entire salary to an association that helps victims of sexual harassment? Or, on the contrary, rely on the presumption of innocence still enjoyed by the accused, since no real charges have yet been laid?
«Roubaix, a light», or the perfect illustration of the oxymoron
When you're in the habit of presenting your work at the Cannes Film Festival, it's hardly surprising that it ends up in the «films d'auteur» category. A label that fits Arnaud Desplechin's work rather well, even if it is somewhat reductive. With feature films such as Comment je me suis disputé... (ma vie sexuelle), Ester Kahn, Un conte de Noël and La Sentinelle, the director has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to explore different styles and registers. With Roubaix, une lumière, although faithful to certain themes, he tries his hand at the genre of poetic realism, not without a certain virtuosity.
