It's rare, very rare, to come across such successful documentaries. Directed by Swiss director Sophie Huber, Blue Note Records: Beyond the Note offers a delightful retrospective on this legendary record company, dedicated to jazz, the real thing. Exit impressions and reflections on jazz and music.
«All the great pianists have played on this label», as one of the artists in the film puts it. Blue Note Records was founded by two German Jews who had fled Nazism, Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, but above all by two jazz enthusiasts, particularly hard bop. They were the founders. Among the artists associated with this label are the three loyalists Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith and Art Blakey, as well as renowned jazzmen such as Sidney Bechet, Miles Davis, Lou Donaldson, Herbie Hancock and Jay Jay Johnson, who recorded cult tracks for the label.
