Woke culture emerged in the USA in the 2000s to describe a militancy in favor of blacks and, by extension, all people deemed disadvantaged on account of their ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, physical appearance or disability. Numerous intellectuals on the left and right, most famously Barack Obama, have condemned this ideology in universities. In the U.S., woke culture is primarily concerned with the defense of black people, in particular with the Black Lives Matter movement, while in Europe it is mainly supported by LGBT lobbies.
