More and more countries are taking steps to combat «hate speech». But these measures are counter-productive. Freedom of expression goes hand in hand with equal rights.

2023 was a disastrous year for free speech in liberal democracies. Sadly, 2024 promises to deepen the melt-down of free speech that has been sweeping open societies for years.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas carried out the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust. Some 1,200 people were killed, including hundreds of civilians. This attack not only triggered Israel's bloody invasion of Gaza. It also had an immediate impact on already tense debates about the limits of freedom of expression in some countries.
