Well-known Geneva writer and politician, Jean Romain was for many years a teacher, notably of philosophy. In 2001, he wrote Open letter to those who still believe in school, Today, he shares his vision of an institution he knows well.
In his Lettre ouverte à ceux qui crois encore en l'école (Open letter to those who still believe in schools), Jean Romain attempted to describe the deep-rooted ideological causes of the school's current dereliction, while suggesting the keys to its «rescue». The main thesis of the text could be summed up as follows: the school has been «scuttled» by «the collusion of two distinct ideologies: on the one hand, that of the cold rationality of the economic right, and on the other, that of the left, of the delegitimization of the school». This collusion between «the liberals and the libertarians», adds the author, clamps the school in the jaws of a "double standard".
